El hombre era un enfermo del golf, un deporte que siempre vi de lejos, hasta el momento de poder hacer swings con @hosgug en Argentina. Recuerdo que muchas de sus enseñanzas estaban ligadas a las anécdotas o principios de ese juego. Y gerenciaba el grupo de empresas como si se tratara de un juego de golf: nunca daba nada por sentado y siempre hacía preguntas qué, por estúpidas que parecieran, siempre te llevaban a un resultado donde podías comprender lo que el tipo quería enseñar o aleccionar. Me he topado en mi vida con muy pocas personas con la inteligencia emocional de Peter. A veces os invitaba a un café fuera de la oficina y el encuentro parecía una sesión de terapia, en lugar de negocios. Era un hombre que manejaba el silencio incómodo con una maestría sin igual, de mirada escrutadora inexpugnable, nunca sabías con qué os iba a salir o qué frases dichas te descolocarían causando efectos difíciles de explicar. Más allá de "sermonearte", los encuentros con éste hombre desprolijo (no usaba corbata, en una época donde era un sacrilegio no hacerlo en el mundo de ventas), eran una aventura. #

The guy was obsessed with golf—a sport I’d always watched from a distance until I finally got to swing a club with @hosgug in Argentina. Most of his lessons were tied to stories or principles from the game. He ran the business group like it was a round of golf: never took anything for granted and always asked questions that, no matter how dumb they sounded, led you to a point where you could grasp what he was trying to teach or drill into you. I’ve crossed paths with very few people who had Peter’s level of emotional intelligence. Sometimes he’d invite us out for coffee, and the meetup felt more like a therapy session than a business chat. He had this uncanny mastery of awkward silence, paired with a piercing gaze—you never knew what curveball he’d throw or which line would knock you off balance with effects that were hard to explain. Se le ocurrían ideas fuera de todo tipo de consideración y catalogadas como "locura" pero, extrañamente, funcionaban. Y fue así como se ganó a pulso la admiración de los dueños de la compañía (hombre de origen portugués, más apegados al conservadurismo que cualquiera), al punto que jamás le volvieron a cuestionar cada "locura" que se le ocurriera. Era un jefe demasiado considerado comparado al promedio y siempre os daba la oportunidad de pensar profundamente lo que habías hecho mal y a reconocer la falla de tal modo, que nunca volvías a fallar (al menos de la misma manera). No le temblaba el pulso para poner en evidencia al culpable de algún despropósito, porque para él, hacer pasar una pena era preferible con el fin de que esa persona no volviera a repetir la falla. Luego la llamaba y la explicación de su acto, haciendo la sesión tipo "terapia", hacía que la persona lejos de odiarlo por la evidente falta de discreción, lo admirara por la argumentación del impasse. No sé donde se encuentre este tipo, pero adonde haya ido, debe haber seguido enriqueciendo vidas. Muy peculiar, en verdad. #

He’d come up with ideas way outside the box, branded as “crazy” by most—but strangely enough, they worked. That’s how he earned, step by step, the respect of the company’s owners (Portuguese by origin, more conservative than anyone you could imagine), to the point where they stopped questioning every “crazy” move he made. He was far more considerate than the average boss, always giving you the chance to think deeply about what you’d messed up and to own the mistake in such a way that you’d never repeat it—at least not in the same fashion. He never hesitated to call out whoever was responsible for a blunder, because for him, a moment of embarrassment was worth it if it meant you wouldn’t trip over the same stone twice. Then he’d follow up with a one-on-one, turning the whole thing into a therapy-style session that left the person, instead of resenting him for the lack of discretion, admiring him for the way he framed the impasse. I don’t know where this guy ended up, but wherever he went, he must have kept enriching lives. Truly peculiar.
