Cleanliness is something relative. Maybe you are shocked reading that, but every single person has their own level of what we think is clean or not. Theoretically, it is linked to the presence of dirt/microorganisms in the environment or in ourselves. However, most of the time we think something is clean but in reality it isn't. We also tolerate the presence of microorganisms in the environment until a certain level so an environment doesn't need to be sterile. But many approaches to being clean reduce the risk of infection for sure. What is the limit?

The level of cleanliness depends on many multi-level factors, such as background culture and level of instruction. Let's take the shower frequency, for example. In many cultures, like Brazil, there is a need to shower once a day at least. Many people take twice. But is it necessary? The country is humid and hot, so people get sweaty in just a few minutes outdoors. Sweat can bring bacteria to our skin, and that can lead to some dermatitis. However, many Brazilians move to cooler countries and continue with this routine of 2 baths a day. Is it still needed?

We hosted a Japanese student for 6 months. She is leaving soon. One thing that we noticed is how she spent detergent liquid soap for washing the dishes. The first interesting thing is that she washes her water bottle every day. She is the only person using it. We know that our saliva contaminates it and can lead to bacterial growth. But is it really necessary to wash it every day? In addition, we have a concentrated spray that you usually need one spray per dish. She is using it multiple times in the same bottle, plus she uses other liquid detergents available, in the end you have a big foam. She overuses everything. Once I read that even if you dilute a bit of detergent in water is enough to wash a whole set of dishes. We need to remove grease, sugar, and other biological compounds that can make microorganisms grow, but that's it. It doesn't need to spend tons of detergent to make a big foam bath.

Cooking our meals is another way to make ourselves more protected. Humans started to avoid many parasites and bacteria by cooking food well. Here in Canada, there is a rule that forbids medium rare hamburgers in restaurants because of that, but it still allows medium rare steaks and people still can eat raw fish in Japanese restaurants. The theory says that when you grind meat, you contaminate it with a non-sterile environment and that makes your ground meat not sterile so you need to cook it well. Many people don't eat medium-rare meat for fear of some type of contamination. Well, I agree that the risks go to zero, but life is good also with some risks, and we have an immune system.

We reduce our risks of getting infected by microorganisms by taking some measures. For sure, we are avoiding so many diseases if we compare with the Middle Ages, when we used to sleep in dirtier places and people were dirtier. Washing hands was uncommon and microorganisms were more in touch with our bodies. Every one of us has different standards of cleanliness nowadays but it doesn't mean that one is more correct than the other. In addition, it isn't associated with wealth status. It is a bad stigma to link poverty and cleanliness.

Limpeza é algo relativo. Talvez você esteja chocado ao ler isso, mas cada pessoa tem seu próprio nível do que considera limpo ou não. Teoricamente, isso está ligado à presença de sujeira/microrganismos no ambiente ou em nós mesmos. No entanto, na maioria das vezes, pensamos que algo está limpo, mas na realidade não está. Também toleramos a presença de microrganismos no ambiente até certo ponto, então um ambiente não precisa ser estéril. Mas muitas abordagens para manter a limpeza reduzem o risco de infecção, com certeza. Qual é o limite?

O nível de limpeza depende de muitos fatores multiníveis, como a cultura de origem e o nível de instrução. Vejamos a frequência do banho, por exemplo. Em muitas culturas, como a brasileira, é necessário tomar banho pelo menos uma vez por dia. Muitas pessoas tomam dois. Mas será que é necessário? O país é úmido e quente, então as pessoas transpiram em poucos minutos ao ar livre. O suor pode trazer bactérias para a pele, o que pode levar a algumas dermatites. No entanto, muitos brasileiros se mudam para países mais frios e continuam com essa rotina de 2 banhos por dia. Ainda é necessário?

Recebemos uma estudante japonesa por 6 meses. Ela está indo embora em breve. Uma coisa que notamos é como ela gastava sabão líquido para lavar a louça. A primeira coisa interessante é que ela lava sua garrafa de água todos os dias. Ela é a única pessoa que a usa. Sabemos que nossa saliva a contamina e pode levar ao crescimento de bactérias. Mas é realmente necessário lavá-la todos os dias? Além disso, temos um spray concentrado que geralmente é necessário uma borrifada por louça. Ela usa várias vezes na mesma garrafa, além de usar outros detergentes líquidos disponíveis, no final você faz uma grande espuma. Ela usa tudo em excesso. Uma vez li que mesmo diluindo um pouco de detergente em água é suficiente para lavar uma louça inteira. Precisamos remover gordura, açúcar e outros compostos biológicos que podem favorecer o crescimento de microrganismos, mas é só isso. Não é preciso gastar toneladas de detergente para fazer um grande banho de espuma.

Cozinhar nossas refeições é outra maneira de nos protegermos mais. Os humanos começaram a evitar muitos parasitas e bactérias cozinhando bem os alimentos. Aqui no Canadá, existe uma regra que proíbe hambúrgueres malpassados em restaurantes por causa disso, mas ainda permite bifes malpassados e as pessoas ainda podem comer peixe cru em restaurantes japoneses. A teoria diz que, ao moer carne, você a contamina com um ambiente não estéril, o que torna a carne moída não estéril, então é preciso cozinhá-la bem. Muitas pessoas não comem carne malpassada por medo de algum tipo de contaminação. Bem, concordo que os riscos são zero, mas a vida é boa também, com alguns riscos, e temos um sistema imunológico.

Reduzimos nossos riscos de ser infectados por microrganismos tomando algumas medidas. Com certeza, estamos evitando muitas doenças se compararmos com a Idade Média, quando dormíamos em lugares mais sujos e as pessoas eram mais sujas. Lavar as mãos era incomum e os microrganismos estavam mais em contato com nossos corpos. Cada um de nós tem padrões diferentes de limpeza hoje em dia, mas isso não significa que um seja mais correto do que o outro. Além disso, não está associado à riqueza. É um estigma ruim associar pobreza e limpeza.
