I posted once about my flying trash bins. More specifically, the blue one, which contains cardboard, paper, and some metals like aluminium foil. The blue bin is big but light because of the content. Before moving to Canada, I had never separated trash, except during some classes in middle school about recycling, where the teacher tried to educate us on the importance of recycling. But until I left, only specific companies were doing that and it was through the private market. The most popular recycling was with beverage cans, where you could get some cents back, usually, this task was performed more by people in poor conditions.

In Canada, it is different; all the cities that I lived in had recycling programs associated with the regular trash collection. In addition, they charge a recycling fee on beverage containers like glass bottles, metal cans, and cartons of milk. When you recycle in specific centers, you get this fee back. But cities have their own way of recycling, and it changes a bit city by city. In Moncton, for example, we didn't have specific bins that the city gives us. They just collect the plastic bags with regular garbage, or on the recycling day, you just dump all your cardboard in front of your house so they can collect it. We didn't have the wind there like here, but the garbage bags left overnight were dangerous. It used to attract big mammals like raccoons and rats.

I bought a black bin by myself to add the regular garbage bags and put it down in a closed space under my entrance stair, but still, one day a big animal knocked it over and tore the bags, it was a mess. That was common to find this type of mess in my neighborhood since the collection was early in the morning. I preferred to wake up early, near the time of the collection, to put the bags out. But still, when the garbage truck was delayed, it was still a problem with animals that could tear the bags. During those days the problem was with birds like crows.

For the recycling program you need to be careful, both cities that I lived they had apps that it could help us to understand what can be fit in each trash category. Many people don't use them and try to use their own logic! One of them is adding Styrofoam with new TVs and other electronics to the blue bin of recycling materials. It is clear in the app that they don't recycle. Also, we have a green bin to add compost. You can add grass that you removed, some plants and rest of food, but no dog poop. And another mistake that people make is adding the compostable trash in compostable bags. The city here states on their website not to do that. These mistakes cause problems in their recycling pipeline

For the drinking containers, we usually don't go through the main city collection. Usually, you need to reach specific buildings spread through the town where they count the bottles and cans and give you the recycling fee back. In my case, I use an app that collects at my place every 2 months. Of course there is a fee that is deducted from my total gains but I prefer that.

Recycling is challenging, especially for those without the patience to check the app to make a proper selection of trash types. My wife is one of those who isn't patient and just dumps everything in the regular garbage. But if everything is reused and recycled, it is already worth it somehow to help the environment.

Postei uma vez sobre minhas lixeiras voadoras. Mais especificamente, a azul, que contém papelão, papel e alguns metais, como papel alumínio. A lixeira azul é grande, mas leve devido ao seu conteúdo. Antes de me mudar para o Canadá, eu nunca havia separado o lixo, exceto durante algumas aulas no ensino fundamental sobre reciclagem, nas quais a professora tentava nos educar sobre a importância da reciclagem. No Canadá, é diferente; todas as cidades em que morei tinham programas de reciclagem associados à coleta regular de lixo. Além disso, eles cobram uma taxa de reciclagem para embalagens de bebidas, como garrafas de vidro, latas de metal e caixas de leite. Quando você recicla em centros específicos, você recebe essa taxa de volta. Mas as cidades têm sua própria maneira de reciclar, e isso varia um pouco de cidade para cidade. Em Moncton, por exemplo, não tínhamos lixeiras específicas que a prefeitura nos fornece. Eles simplesmente coletam os sacos plásticos junto com o lixo comum ou, no dia da reciclagem, você simplesmente joga todo o papelão na frente de casa para que eles possam recolhê-lo. Comprei uma lixeira preta para colocar os sacos de lixo comuns e coloquei em um espaço fechado embaixo da minha escada de entrada, mas mesmo assim, um dia, um animal grande a derrubou e rasgou os sacos, e ficou uma bagunça. Era comum encontrar esse tipo de bagunça no meu bairro, já que a coleta era de manhã cedo. Eu preferia acordar cedo, perto do horário da coleta, para colocar os sacos para fora. Mesmo assim, quando o caminhão de lixo atrasava, ainda havia um problema com animais que podiam rasgar os sacos. Naqueles dias, o problema eram pássaros, como corvos.

Em relação ao programa de reciclagem, é preciso ter cuidado. Ambas as cidades em que morei tinham aplicativos que nos ajudavam a entender o que cabe em cada categoria de lixo. Muitas pessoas não os usam e tentam usar sua própria lógica! Um deles é adicionar isopor com TVs novas e outros eletrônicos à lixeira azul de materiais recicláveis. Está claro no aplicativo que eles não reciclam. Além disso, temos uma lixeira verde para adicionar composto. Você pode adicionar grama que removeu, algumas plantas e restos de comida, mas nada de cocô de cachorro. Outro erro que as pessoas cometem é adicionar o lixo compostável em sacos compostáveis. A cidade aqui declara em seu site que não se deve fazer isso. Esses erros causam problemas em seu processo de reciclagem.

Para os recipientes de bebidas, geralmente não usamos a coleta principal da cidade. Normalmente, você precisa ir a prédios específicos espalhados pela cidade, onde eles contam as garrafas e latas e devolvem a taxa de reciclagem. No meu caso, uso um aplicativo que coleta na minha casa a cada 2 meses. Claro que há uma taxa que é deduzida dos meus ganhos totais, mas eu prefiro assim.

Reciclar é desafiador, especialmente para quem não tem paciência para verificar o aplicativo e fazer uma seleção adequada dos tipos de lixo. Minha esposa é uma daquelas que não tem paciência e simplesmente joga tudo no lixo comum. Mas se tudo for reutilizado e reciclado, já vale a pena de alguma forma ajudar o meio ambiente.
