I'm here again to share with you the last essay I wrote for the class I took this semester (and it's also the last essay of my undergraduate career). Although I knew little about the subject before these classes, I really liked it. It invites you to reflect on that idea of "freedom" that you're so driven to achieve. But in today's society, are we really free? First, it must be understood that in all types of relationships there is a certain level of power, which is why even in psychology, given its role in society, there is a normalizing power generated by existing inequalities. This is not so obvious, since such power can operate in subtle and often invisible ways through norms and/or regulations that indicate what is considered appropriate or "normal" and what is not. This power shapes people's lives without necessarily perceiving direct control. Therefore, if we consider what has been proposed regarding biopolitics, psychology turns out to be an instrument of social control. However, from a moral perspective, biopolitics is inherently ambivalent. While it can be a tool to improve the health and well-being of populations, it also carries significant risks for individual autonomy, equality, privacy, and human rights, thereby undermining the liberation it is supposed to guarantee for the well-being of people. In this sense, for years, psychology has been responsible for pathologizing behaviors through its knowledge, deciding what is and what is not acceptable in the lives of individuals, establishing a diagnosis as an exercise of control and power for the benefit of society, as well as its various institutions. Psychology, as a discipline with a specific body of knowledge, exercises power by defining normality and pathology. Seen in this way, this science appears to be merely an oppressive disciplinary instrument, seeking to ensure that society contains people who fulfill certain roles, and that those who are not beneficial are marginalized. As Foucault said, "The madman, the sick person, the criminal, the homosexual were invented by medical and psychological knowledge to be subsequently controlled." ![Biopolitica2.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/mandysmoon/23xL2itQtDxvViofYx1iyLms8JWAUMboUMLqpZx8CSQsjTGG97ZqHXGb5sE4wwNAEeqvh.jpg) ^{[Source](https://dossiergeopolitico.com/2021/02/01/los-ultimos-desafios-de-la-biopolitica/)} This can be observed in professional practice, where many psychologists view discomfort as pathological, labeling a person with the stigma of a certain diagnosis that often even the professional is unsure of. However, this diagnosis can be a quick response to the patient's discomfort, simply following the predetermined and common intervention for the type of case. Thus, the psychologist "follows the manual" without taking into account the individual's particular context, prioritizing patient regulation so as not to harm the normalcy of others. However, considering the notion of "liberation" in Foucault's thought, he did not understand it as a total emancipation from power structures, but rather as the possibility of resistance and the creation of spaces for subjectivation outside of imposed norms. Seen in this light, psychology, in certain practices or approaches, could generate these forms of resistance or autonomy, allowing individuals to discover themselves from their own particularities in order to adapt to their capacities and find the best way to face external circumstances. ![1_6emsA8-XmyI2SN0usOmxPQ.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/mandysmoon/23wWyPVjnGRwwrpkH6qSfpwMQDf1hhxZsoBqWjU9tFrDBia4qDsmgbewWS2Qe8BMAwpUk.png) ^{[Source](https://medium.com/@elizabethsnchezlpez/la-biopol%C3%ADtica-y-el-biopoder-bda26bfd420c)} As Juan Pastor points out in his reflection on the relevance of Foucault for psychology, "only by understanding how we have become what we are can we not only truly understand who we are, but also become different." Therefore, psychologists in their professional practice can understand the context and particularities of the individual, ensuring their well-being by acquiring coping tools. They understand that the patient's surroundings are unlikely to change, but they can attempt to modify the way the person interprets situations and how they act accordingly. Therefore, there are potential positive aspects from certain utilitarian or common welfare ethics, such as improved quality of life, since public health, sanitation, and safety policies based on psychological standards of normality can lead to healthier, longer-lived populations with greater general well-being. But there are also serious risks and criticisms from various deontological ethics toward this type of psychology, such as paternalism and limitation of autonomy, since it involves restricting certain behaviors for the sake of collective health and can be seen as intrusions on personal freedom and the ability to make decisions about one's own body as well as one's own life. ![nikolas-rose-biopolitica-la-invencion-de-nosotros-mismos_claima20110905_0146_23.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/mandysmoon/23ywyv7UH8YkrwJ5GiaGnyyi8qedh9gcpWf5PVtDXj8GvAJKo4EZuYgFKse7rFqamgtME.jpg) ^{[Source](https://akantilado.wordpress.com/2011/09/05/biopolitica/)} Bearing in mind its benefits and shortcomings, there is no simple moral answer to the question of whether biopolitics in psychology is "good" or "bad"; its moral value depends on how it is implemented and to what ends. Thus, the question of whether psychology is a tool of liberation or an instrument of social control depends on how power is exercised within its different practices and discourses, and on the critical awareness that both professionals and users have of these dynamics. In this sense, the conception and practice of psychology have historically evolved in relation to social power. While psychological norms still contribute to defining "normal" and "abnormal" within this framework, critical psychology currently promotes questioning diagnoses as tools of control, emphasizing the sociohistorical context of discomfort and individual perspectives, seeking to externalize problems to separate them from identity, showing how they arise from dominant discourses. In this way, Foucault's perspective invites us to maintain a vigilant eye on the role of psychology in society and to constantly question its foundations and effects, in order to continue its practice, avoiding, to the extent possible, the lack of transparency and sincerity that can open the door to manipulation rather than benefiting the patient. The key lies in critical awareness and practices that foster autonomy and resilience rather than mere adaptation to norms.

Nuevamente me encuentro aquí para compartir con ustedes el último ensayo que hice para la materia que vi este semestre (y es también el último ensayo en mi carrera de pregrado). Aunque poco conocía del tema antes de estas clases, lo cierto es que me gustó bastante. Te invita a reflexionar sobre esa idea de «libertad» que tanto te impulsan a alcanzar, pero en la sociedad actual, ¿realmente somos libres? En primer lugar, se debe comprender que en todo tipo de relación existe cierto nivel de poder, por lo cual incluso en la psicología desde su rol en la sociedad existe un poder normalizador generado desde las desigualdades existentes. Esto no resulta tan evidente, puesto que dicho poder puede operar de maneras sutiles y a menudo invisibles a través de normas y/o regulaciones que indican aquello que se considera adecuado o “normal” y lo que no. Este poder moldea la vida de las personas sin que necesariamente se perciba un control directo, por lo tanto, si vemos lo planteado respecto a la biopolítica, la psicología resulta ser un instrumento de control social. No obstante, desde un punto de vista moral la biopolítica es inherentemente ambivalente. Si bien puede ser una herramienta para mejorar la salud y el bienestar de las poblaciones, también conlleva riesgos significativos para la autonomía individual, la igualdad, la privacidad y los derechos humanos, por lo cual estaría atentando contra la liberación que se supone debería garantizar para el bienestar de las personas. En este sentido, durante años a través del saber la psicología se ha encargado de patologizar conductas bajo sus estándares, decidiendo qué es aceptado y qué no en la vida de los individuos, estableciendo un diagnóstico como un ejercicio de control y poder en beneficio de la sociedad, además de para sus diversas instituciones. La psicología, como disciplina con un cuerpo de conocimiento específico, ejerce poder al definir la normalidad y la patología. Visto así, esta ciencia parece ser solamente un medio disciplinario opresor, que busca garantizar que en la sociedad existan personas que cumplan cierto rol y aquel que no sea beneficioso, sea entonces marginado. Como decía Foucault, “el loco, el enfermo, el delincuente, el homosexual, fueron inventados por el saber médico y psicológico para ser luego controlados”. ![Biopolitica2.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/mandysmoon/23xL2itQtDxvViofYx1iyLms8JWAUMboUMLqpZx8CSQsjTGG97ZqHXGb5sE4wwNAEeqvh.jpg) ^{[Fuente](https://dossiergeopolitico.com/2021/02/01/los-ultimos-desafios-de-la-biopolitica/)} Esto se puede observar en el ejercicio profesional, donde muchos psicólogos observan un malestar como patológico, etiquetando a una persona bajo el estigma de determinado diagnóstico del cual muchas veces ni el mismo profesional está seguro, pero que puede ser una respuesta rápida para el malestar del paciente siguiendo simplemente la intervención predeterminada y común para el tipo de caso. Así el psicólogo “sigue el manual” sin tomar en cuenta el contexto particular de la persona, puesto que prioriza la regulación del paciente para que no perjudique la normalidad del resto. Sin embargo, si se considera la noción de "liberación" en el pensamiento de Foucault, él no la entendía como una emancipación total de las estructuras de poder, sino más bien como la posibilidad de resistencia y la creación de espacios de subjetivación fuera de las normas impuestas. Visto de esta forma, la psicología en ciertas prácticas o enfoques podría generar estas formas de resistencia o autonomía, permitiéndole a los individuos descubrirse a sí mismos desde sus propias particularidades para así adaptarse a sus capacidades y encontrar la mejor manera de enfrentar las circunstancias externas. ![1_6emsA8-XmyI2SN0usOmxPQ.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/mandysmoon/23wWyPVjnGRwwrpkH6qSfpwMQDf1hhxZsoBqWjU9tFrDBia4qDsmgbewWS2Qe8BMAwpUk.png) ^{[Fuente](https://medium.com/@elizabethsnchezlpez/la-biopol%C3%ADtica-y-el-biopoder-bda26bfd420c)} Tal como señala Juan Pastor en su reflexión sobre la relevancia de Foucault para la psicología, “sólo comprendiendo cómo hemos llegado a ser lo que somos podremos no sólo comprender realmente cómo somos, sino, además, llegar a ser otros distintos”. Entonces el psicólogo en su ejercicio profesional puede comprender el contexto y particularidades del individuo garantizando su bienestar mediante la adquisición de herramientas de afrontamiento, comprendiendo que lo que rodea al paciente difícilmente cambiará, pero sí puede intentar modificar la manera en que la persona interpreta las situaciones y cómo actúa en base a estas. Entonces, existen posibles aspectos positivos desde ciertas éticas utilitaristas o de bienestar común como la mejora de la calidad de vida, puesto que las políticas de salud pública, saneamiento y seguridad basadas en los estándares psicológicos de normalidad, pueden llevar a poblaciones más sanas, longevas y con mayor bienestar general. Pero también están los serios riesgos y críticas desde diversas éticas deontológicas hacia este tipo de psicología, como el paternalismo y limitación de la autonomía, puesto que implica restringir ciertas conductas por el bien de la salud colectiva y pueden ser vistos como intrusiones en la libertad personal y la capacidad de tomar decisiones sobre el propio cuerpo así como la propia vida. ![nikolas-rose-biopolitica-la-invencion-de-nosotros-mismos_claima20110905_0146_23.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/mandysmoon/23ywyv7UH8YkrwJ5GiaGnyyi8qedh9gcpWf5PVtDXj8GvAJKo4EZuYgFKse7rFqamgtME.jpg) ^{[Fuente](https://akantilado.wordpress.com/2011/09/05/biopolitica/)} Teniendo sus beneficios y defectos presentes, no hay una respuesta moral simple a la pregunta de si la biopolítica en la psicología es "buena" o "mala"; su valor moral depende de cómo se implementa y con qué fines. Entonces, la pregunta de si la psicología es una herramienta de liberación o un instrumento de control social depende de cómo se ejerce el poder dentro de sus diferentes prácticas y discursos, y de la conciencia crítica que tanto profesionales como usuarios tengan sobre estas dinámicas. En este sentido, la concepción y la práctica de la psicología han evolucionado históricamente en relación con el poder social. Si bien las normas psicológicas aún contribuyen a definir lo "normal" y lo "anormal" dentro de este marco, actualmente desde la psicología crítica se promueve cuestionar los diagnósticos como herramientas de control, enfatizando el contexto sociohistórico del malestar y desde lo individual, buscando la externalización de los problemas para desligarlos de la identidad, mostrando cómo surgen de discursos dominantes De esta forma, la perspectiva de Foucault nos invita a mantener una mirada vigilante sobre el rol de la psicología en la sociedad y a cuestionar constantemente sus fundamentos y efectos, para así en la medida de lo posible continuar con su ejercicio evitando la falta de transparencia y sinceridad que puede abrir la puerta a la manipulación en vez del beneficio del paciente. la clave reside en la conciencia crítica y en las prácticas que fomentan la autonomía y la resistencia en lugar de la mera adaptación a normas.
