# Initiative: The desire to “fit in” and its cost to mental health The number of people who have had breakdowns (meaning emotional breakdowns) from trying to fit in is staggering. But that “breakdown” or self-awareness doesn't happen until we are adults. Some wake up while still young, others do so in middle age, and for some it is already too late 😔. Why is that? It is clear that most people (a few are exceptions to the rule) grew up under norms and dogmas imposed for generations. And that type of “model” is what was instilled in us, along with a restrictive upbringing based on obeying these principles. This Matrix in which we all live is composed of such solid and perfectly structured foundations that it is difficult to escape. None of us were able to see it from childhood; in the end, we ended up opening our eyes with the blows that life deals us. --- This “fitting in” comes at a very high cost to our mental health, even if it doesn't seem so at first. The best example of this is during our school years, when we feel the need to be included in a group and are not, or when making friends is more difficult for us than for others. So, in order to survive, the brain looks for a way to adapt: by imitating behaviors, tastes, and interests. And with that, our authenticity, our own personality and essence, is diminished. The conventional is rewarded and anything out of the ordinary is considered “weird” or “bad,” so if you have something that stands out or is different from the majority, you are marginalized and judged. It is normal for this same scenario to repeat itself in college, at work, in the family, and in general, in everyday life. If we somehow break with some unfounded “doctrine” in any of these stages, we are singled out and censured. The most common is usually not meeting the “stipulated times” to achieve certain goals in life. The truth is that we all have completely different paths, talents, personalities, and ways of doing things. What “others” do does not have to define us, nor should it be a guide. We chart our own course, and there is always an opportunity to return to our path if we stray. --- # My personal experience I learned my first lessons during my school years. At first, I spent many recesses alone. It was difficult for me to adapt to this new school where I ended up studying, full of rules, religion, calligraphy notebooks, and scoldings—many scoldings because I didn't understand anything. The problem was social; I was overwhelmed and didn't know how to express myself and interact like the other children. I mentioned before that a teacher mistreated and humiliated me, and that didn't generate anything positive, as it was right in my first year starting at that new institution. Another thing was the rules about the uniform we had to wear. It had to be impeccable, neat, clean, and in good condition... I was always a mess, and I could never understand why I had to be so well-groomed. It bothered me. And don't even get me started on my hair. In almost all my school photos, I look like a crazy person. More reprimands, bullying from my classmates who did look pretty and well-groomed 😆, unnecessary comparisons, and a “no long earrings or bracelets allowed” rule enforced by some of the nuns characterized my experience at school. I loved wearing lots of bracelets up to my elbow, and thanks to that school, I got used to wearing almost no accessories 😅. I never wanted to fit in despite everything, and I don't remember these experiences with resentment. It makes me laugh to see the photos and the state my uniform was sometimes in 🤣, and I understand the nuns a little bit, just a little bit. The best thing that came out of that period were my lifelong friends, whom I still have today and who are excellent women, professionals, and good people. --- The following lessons came in adulthood, when I had to face the professional world. I experienced workplace harassment, I was shocked by what envy does to some people, and I glimpsed the Matrix at its finest: abuse of power, exploitation, and slavery. Because working in an office is also being a slave. We are the working class and the ones who sustain everything, but at the same time we live marginalized from the elites. We are the ones at the bottom and not at the top as the system would have us believe. We have no rights and no control over anything. Negative experiences hindered my progress because they didn't allow me to grow within companies, added to the fact that they noticed I wasn't trying to fit in and be like the rest: I'm not a gossip, I'm not a bully, I don't like to trip anyone up, and I don't want to take someone else's job. I liked to question things before blindly obeying; I preferred to have several options at hand and look for solutions. I said what I didn't like (without wanting to steal the spotlight from the boss) so that the work would improve, while everyone else nodded and remained silent... Unfortunately, for the system, these are not qualities, but flaws that make you an outcast. Because if you don't like spending your last dollar on beer and listening to awful music... you're from another planet. If you don't give in to harassment and complain or express your desire to take legal action (especially when it comes to gender violence), they look at you as if you were a criminal. They justify, pander to, and applaud the aggressor, who, in turn, manipulates everyone else against you and continues to harass you through them. And those who join in the bullying are just as bad or worse... and the few who deep down disagree remain silent so as not to be fired or singled out for “stepping out” of that Matrix. --- I understand that the need to belong is one of the most primitive human drives. However, it should not be a reason to set aside our values and sweep empathy under the rug. Much humanity has been lost along the way in trying to fit in. It has been distorted, transforming into a silent tyranny that demands uniformity at the expense of our identity. Living in the “age of image,” where social media shows perfect lives and uninterrupted success, has created a breeding ground for increased social pressure that is destroying the mental health of many. So, when we strive to “fit in,” what we are actually doing is building a social mask that reflects the version that will be most accepted or applauded according to our thoughts. This creates a corrosive dissonance for our mental health. The first thing that is affected is our self-esteem because we condition ourselves to that mask we made so that “shoe” fits us well, even if it is not our size. Every criticism and rejection is like someone touching our skin roughly when we are sunburned: it causes us unimaginable deep pain. That constant insecurity can lead to social anxiety, a persistent fear of being judged or scrutinized by others. Because the message we tell ourselves when we wear that mask is: “my authentic self is not good enough,” and that idea becomes engraved in our brains, only to be repeated over and over again. --- ### We end up distancing ourselves so much from our own being that another dangerous sister of anxiety appears: depression. And that's how I fell, and many others have fallen too, which is why I will always emphasize the importance of mental health. Without it, we have nothing. You can exercise as much as you want and eat perfectly, but if your mind is not in balance, you will not be able to move forward. Because the need to be part of the system leads us to make decisions that we later regret: choosing a career for money or because of our parents' misguided advice, staying in unhealthy relationships to avoid being alone, or following “trends” to be part of a group. Each of these mistakes is a step further away from the life we should genuinely be living. # We must seek to belong 🙌 Unlike fitting in, belonging is the experience we should seek in order to be fully accepted for who we really are (with our virtues and flaws), without having to change ourselves. True belonging only flourishes in authenticity. To regain mental health, it is necessary to dismantle the obligation to fit in. The path is not easy, as it involves swimming against the tide of social norms rooted in cultural memory. But it is not impossible. The secret lies in cultivating deep and meaningful bonds with people who share our values and ways of seeing life. La cantidad de personas que han tenido breakdowns (entendiéndose como colapsos emocionales) por intentar encajar es abismal. Pero esa "ruptura" o toma de consciencia de sí mismos no ocurre sino hasta que somos adultos. Algunos despiertan estando jóvenes todavía, otros lo hacen en la mediana edad y para algunos ya es demasiado tarde 😔. ¿Por qué será? Es evidente que la mayoría de las personas (unos pocos se salen de la estadística) crecieron bajo normas y dogmas impuestos desde hace generaciones. Y ese tipo de "modelo" es el que nos inculcaron + un tipo de crianza restrictiva a base de obedecer estos principios. Esta Matrix en la que convivimos todos, se compone de bases tan sólidas y perfectamente estructuradas que salir de allí es complicado. Ese "encajar" tiene un costo muy alto para nuestra salud mental, aunque no parezca en un principio. El mejor ejemplo lo tenemos todos en la etapa escolar, cuando aparece la necesidad de ser incluido en un grupo y no lo hacen, o cuando hacer amigos nos cuesta más que al resto. Entonces, para sobrevivir el cerebro busca una manera de adaptarse: imitando comportamientos, gustos e intereses. Y con ello se va mermando la autenticidad, nuestra propia personalidad y esencia. Se premia lo convencional y todo lo que esté fuera de lo común se considera "raro" o "malo", por lo que si tienes algo que destaque o sea distinto a la mayoría, eres marginado y juzgado. Es normal que este mismo escenario se repita en la etapa universitaria, en el trabajo, en la familia y, en general, en la vida diaria. Si de alguna manera rompemos con alguna "doctrina" infundada en alguna de esas etapas, somos señalados y censurados. La más común suele ser el no cumplir con los "tiempos estipulados" para alcanzar ciertas metas en la vida. Y la verdad es que todos tenemos caminos, talentos, personalidades y formas de hacer las cosas completamente distintas. Lo que hace el "otro" no tiene por qué definirnos y tampoco debe ser una guía. # Mi experiencia personal Las primeras lecciones las viví en mi período escolar. Al principio, tuve muchos recreos sola, me costó bastante adaptarme a ese nuevo colegio en el que terminé estudiando, lleno de reglas, religión, cuadernos de caligrafía y regaños, muchos regaños porque no entendía nada. El problema estaba en la parte social, me saturaba sobremanera y no sabía cómo expresarlo e interactuar como los otros niños. Ya mencioné antes que una profesora me maltrataba y humillaba y eso no generó nada positivo, pues fue justo en mi primer año empezando en esa nueva institución. Otro añadido, eran las normas del uniforme que debíamos usar, había que tenerlo impecable, ordenado, limpio y bueno... yo siempre andaba toda esperolá', como decimos en Venezuela, nunca fui capaz de entender por qué tenía que estar tan arreglada, eso me molestaba. Y el pelo ni se diga, en casi todas mis fotos escolares parezco una loca. Más llamadas de atención, bullying de mis compañeras que sí iban bonitas y acomodaditas 😆, comparaciones innecesarias y un *"está prohibido traer zarcillos largos y pulseras"*, expresado por alguna de las monjas, caracterizó la vivencia en la escuela. Yo amaba usar montones de pulseras hasta el codo y gracias a ese colegio, me acostumbré a no usar casi nada de accesorios 😅. Nunca quise encajar a pesar de todo y tampoco recuerdo estas experiencias con rencor, me causa gracia ver las fotos y el estado en el que estaba mi uniforme a veces 🤣 y entiendo un poquito, solo un poquito a las monjas. Las siguientes lecciones llegaron en la adultez, cuando tuve que enfrentarme al mundo profesional. Conocí el acoso laboral, me impresioné de lo que hace la envidia en algunas personas y vislumbré a la Matrix en su máxima expresión: el abuso de poder, la explotación y la esclavitud. Porque trabajar en una oficina también es ser esclavo. Somos la clase trabajadora y los que sostenemos todo, pero al mismo tiempo vivimos marginados de las élites. Somos los que estamos abajo y **no arriba** como el sistema nos quiere hacer creer. No tenemos derechos ni el control de absolutamente nada. Las experiencias negativas dificultaron mi avance porque no me dejaban crecer dentro de las empresas, sumado a que notaban que yo no buscaba encajar y ser como el resto: no soy chismosa, no soy bully, no me gusta meterle la zancadilla a nadie y tampoco deseo quedarme con el cargo de otra persona. Me gustaba cuestionar las cosas antes de obedecer ciegamente, prefería tener a la mano varias opciones y buscar soluciones. Decía lo que no me gustaba (sin querer robarle protagonismo al jefe) para que el trabajo mejorara, mientras todos los demás asentían y se quedaban en silencio... Lamentablemente, para el sistema estas no son cualidades, sino defectos que te hacen estar descarrilado. Porque si no te gusta gastarte el quince y último en cervezas y escuchar musiquita horrible... eres de otro planeta. Si no cedes al acoso y te quejas o manifiestas tu deseo de tomar acciones legales (sobre todo cuando se trata de violencia de género) te miran como si fueras un delincuente. Justifican, alcahuetean y aplauden al agresor o agresora que, a su vez, manipula a todos los demás en tu contra y te sigue molestando por medio de ellos. Entiendo que la necesidad de pertenencia es una de las pulsiones humanas más primitivas. Sin embargo, no debería ser una razón para dejar nuestros valores de lado y la empatía debajo de la alfombra. Se ha perdido mucha humanidad en el camino por intentar encajar. Se ha distorsionado, transformándose en una tiranía silenciosa que nos exige uniformidad a costa de nuestra identidad. Convivir en la "era de la imagen", donde las redes sociales muestran vidas perfectas y éxitos ininterrumpidos, ha creado un caldo de cultivo para aumentar una presión social que está acabando con la salud mental de muchos. Entonces, cuando nos esforzamos por "encajar", lo que en realidad hacemos es construir una máscara social que refleja la versión que será más aceptada o aplaudida según nuestros pensamientos. Esto nos produce una disonancia corrosiva para nuestra salud mental. Lo primero que se ve afectado es nuestra autoestima porque nos condicionamos a esa máscara que hicimos para que ese "zapato" nos ajuste bien, aunque no sea de nuestra talla. Cada crítica y rechazo es como si alguien nos tocara con brusquedad la piel estando insolados: nos produce un dolor profundo inimaginable. Esa inseguridad constante puede derivar en una ansiedad social, un miedo persistente a ese juicio o escrutinio continuo por parte de los otros. ### Nos terminamos distanciando tanto de nuestro propio ser que aparece otra hermana peligrosa de la ansiedad: la depresión. *Y así fue como fui cayendo yo y han caído muchos, por eso siempre haré hincapié en la importancia de la salud mental, sin ella no tenemos nada. Puedes hacer todo el ejercicio que quieras y alimentarte perfectamente, pero si la mente no está en equilibrio, no lograrás avanzar.* Porque la necesidad de ser parte del sistema, de igual manera nos lleva a tomar decisiones que después lamentamos: elegir una carrera por dinero o por los consejos erróneos de nuestros padres, mantener relaciones dañinas por no estar solo, o seguir "tendencias" para ser parte de un grupo. Cada una de estas equivocaciones es un paso más lejos de la vida que genuinamente deberíamos tener. # Hay que buscar *pertenecer 🙌* A diferencia de encajar, pertenecer es la experiencia que deberíamos buscar para ser plenamente aceptados por quienes somos realmente, (con nuestras virtudes y defectos), sin necesidad de cambiarnos a nosotros mismos. **La pertenencia verdadera solo florece en la autenticidad.** Para recuperar la salud mental es necesario desmantelar la **obligación de encajar**. El camino no es nada fácil, pues implica nadar contra la corriente de esas normas sociales arraigadas en la memoria cultural. Pero no es imposible, el secreto está en cultivar vínculos profundos y significativos con personas afines a nuestros mismos valores y formas de ver la vida.
