Difficulty in video games is a topic that can not be taken lightly, when a video game allows us to choose at what level of difficulty we want to experience the game, it is telling us in a few words that we can test ourselves and discover how skilled we are to complete the game facing a challenging experience or we can have an experience a little quieter and without many frustrations, or also if the game allows it, choose a difficulty that balances between a quiet experience and with some moments with a relatively high level of difficulty, but there are some video games that do not offer the options to regulate the difficulty in our own way.

But these games force us to explore more and be a little more cautious because we do not know at what point we will run into a very difficult moment, and they have a learning curve designed in such a way that the more we play, the easier it becomes to make a plan to face that difficult moment, Dark Souls is one of those games that does not allow us to choose in which difficulty to experience it, and it is a game with a high and challenging difficulty, so much so that many people find it very difficult to advance even in the first areas of the game, causing some to get frustrated and quit the game, but does Dark Souls need an easy mode?

La dificultad en los videojuegos es un tema que no se puede tomar a la ligera, cuando un videojuego nos permite elegir en qué nivel de dificultad queremos experimentar el juego, en pocas palabras nos está diciendo que podemos ponernos a prueba y descubrir que tan hábiles somos para completar el juego frente a una experiencia desafiante o bien podemos tener una experiencia un poco más tranquila y sin muchas frustraciones, o también si el juego lo permite, elegir una dificultad que se equilibre entre una experiencia tranquila y con algunos momentos con un nivel relativamente alto de dificultad, pero hay algunos videojuegos que no ofrecen las opciones para regular la dificultad a nuestra manera.

Pero estos juegos nos obligan a explorar más y ser un poco más precavidos porque no sabemos en qué momento nos toparemos con un momento muy difícil, y tienen una curva de aprendizaje diseñada de tal modo que mientras más juguemos, más fácil se nos hace realizar un plan para afrontar ese momento difícil, Dark Souls es uno de esos juegos que no nos permite elegir en que dificultad experimentarlo, y es un juego con una dificultad elevada y desafiante, tanto así que a muchos se les hace muy difícil avanzar incluso en las primeras zonas del juego, haciendo que algunos se frustren y abandonen el juego, pero ¿Dark Souls necesita un modo fácil?

Some time ago I recommended Dark Souls to a friend, and the same day he tried it he decided to quit, because he got frustrated, and one of the things he told me was "I didn't like this game, I don't even know where to go, I think it needs a map to guide you", I laughed when he told me that, but surely the first experience of many was also frustrating, not knowing where to go or what attributes to upgrade when you level up, but that's one of the reasons why it's my favorite game, you are the one who decides how to adapt to the difficulty, you have to explore by yourself and realize that you are choosing the right path for your level.

Hace un tiempo atrás le recomendé Dark Souls a un amigo, y el mismo día que lo probó decidió dejarlo, porque se frustró, y una de las cosas que me dijo fue "no me gustó este juego, no sé ni para donde ir, pienso que necesita un mapa para guiarte", me reí cuando me lo dijo, pero seguramente la primera experiencia de muchos también fue algo frustrante, sin saber a dónde ir o que atributos subir cuando subes de nivel, pero esa es una de las razones por las que es mi juego favorito, tú mismo eres quien decide como adaptarse a la dificultad, tú mismo tienes que explorar y darte cuenta que estás eligiendo el camino apto para tu nivel.

Creo que la dificultad de este juego está pensado para que uses la lógica, si vas por un camino repleto de enemigos que te matan fácilmente, lo más razonable sería pensar que tal vez no tienes la experiencia o el nivel adecuado para ir por esa zona y tal vez deberías probar por otro lado, uno de mis primeros fallos al jugar fue que después de tocar la primera campana, me dirigí hacia New Londo Ruins, sí, si has jugado a este juego ya sabrás lo que pasó, estuve alrededor de 8 horas tratando de explorar New Londo Ruins, porque no usé la lógica para darme cuenta que las veces que había muerto fácilmente era un indicativo de que ese no era un lugar apto para explorar todavía.

I think the difficulty of this game is thought for you to use logic, if you go through a path full of enemies that kill you easily, the most reasonable thing would be to think that maybe you don't have the experience or the right level to go through that area and maybe you should try somewhere else, one of my first failures when playing was that after ringing the first bell, I headed towards New Londo Ruins, yes, if you have played this game you will already know what happened, I spent around 8 hours trying to explore New Londo Ruins, because I didn't use logic to realize that the times I had died easily was an indication that that was not a place suitable to explore yet.

Sen's Fortress is one of the most difficult places I've explored, a place full of traps, but you can use those traps to your advantage, making good use of the scenario can make it easier to complete an area, and this is just a small example of many, that is, in many areas of the game we can use the scenario at our convenience, without having to spend a frustrating moment and leave the game because it seems unfair.

La fortaleza de Sen's Fortress es uno de los lugares más difíciles que he explorado, un lugar lleno de trampas, pero puedes usar esas trampas a tu favor, hacer buen uso del escenario puede facilitarte el completar una zona, y este es solo un pequeño ejemplo de muchos, es decir, en muchas zonas del juego podemos usar el escenario a nuestra conveniencia, sin tener que pasar un momento frustrante y abandonar el juego porque te parece injusto.

La dificultad se reduce bastante cuando ya dominamos las mecánicas, aprendemos a usar los items y nuestras armas, a lo largo del juego vamos explorando zonas con diferentes enemigos con los que nos enfrentaremos y todos con diferentes maneras de atacarte, esos enemigos nos obligan a explorar las mecánicas de combate para obtener una victoria, y cuando nos toca enfrentarnos con un jefe es cuando tenemos que poner al límite todo lo que hemos aprendido, observar muy bien el escenario, ver el alcance de sus ataques, una manera de evadir sus ataques y una manera de atacarlo sin sufrir consecuencias letales, incluso cada derrota es una invitación a crear o actualizar un plan, la dificultad hace que nos esforcemos, y ese esfuerzo hace que cada victoria sea muy gratificante.

The difficulty is greatly reduced when we master the mechanics, we learn to use the items and our weapons, throughout the game we explore areas with different enemies that we will face and all with different ways to attack you, these enemies force us to explore the mechanics of combat to get a victory, and when we face a boss is when we have to put to the limit everything we have learned, observe the scenario very well, see the range of their attacks, a way to evade their attacks and a way to attack without suffering lethal consequences, even each defeat is an invitation to create or update a plan, the difficulty makes us strive, and that effort makes each victory is very rewarding.

La dificultad de Dark Souls es una dificultad idónea para que vayamos poco a poco aprendiendo cómo funciona el juego y el cómo afrontar los momentos más difíciles, hay juegos donde pelear contra 1 es lo mismo que pelear contra 20, como en Assassin's Creed por ejemplo, pero en Dark Souls es otra historia, pelear contra 2 o 3 puede ser una muerte segura o una victoria gratificante, y perder no es una opción para nada aceptable, en otros juegos solo volvemos a un checkpoint, pero aquí perdemos mucho, perdemos la humanidad y las almas (si no las recuperamos luego de morir) no estoy diciendo que los otros juegos sean malos por no tener una curva de dificultad como Dark Souls, lo que quiero decir con esto es que si hay una tensión y una sensación de peligro cuando nos enfrentamos a una situación de vida o muerte.
