Hello everyone, I hope you're doing great. This time, I want to share a new review with you. I want to talk a bit about a film that really surprised me, called The Braid. It's one of those little gems you stumble upon out of nowhere, that leaves you thinking and, above all, feeling a ton of things. I went in without knowing what it was about, honestly. I thought, "well, just another drama," but it left me thoughtful. It's based on a bestselling novel by Laetitia Colombani, and she wrote and directed the film herself! That's always a great sign because you know the original idea, the soul of the story, won't get lost along the way. The book was a massive hit in Europe and many other countries, and when you watch the movie, you understand why this story resonates with so many people from such different cultures. The idea is simply brilliant, and it's executed with incredible elegance. The film follows three women on three different continents who have absolutely no idea the others exist. At first, you dive deep into their lives, which have nothing to do with each other, and for a moment you wonder, "okay, where is this going? Is this like three short films put together?" But there's a confidence in the storytelling that lets you know their paths will cross, and the sheer emotion of discovering how that connecting thread will be woven is half the magic. The film is a powerful tribute to the strength of women, showing these "Amazons," as the movie itself calls them, fighting their own epic battles—not battles with swords, but the real struggles, both internal and external, against the world, against timeless prejudices, and against the suffocating boxes that society, family, or even they themselves try to fit into. >Hola a todos, espero que estén super bien, en esta ocasión quiero compartirles una nueva reseña,es quiero hablar un poco sobre una película que me sorprendió mucho, se llama The Braid, es una de esas joyitas que te encuentras de la nada, te dejan pensando y, sobre todo, sintiendo un montón de cosas.. yo entré sin saber qué onda, la verdad, pensé "bueno, otro drama más", pero me dejópensativo, está basada en una novela que fue un exitazo, de Laetitia Colombani, ¡y ella misma escribió y dirigió la película! Y eso siempre es una señal buenísima, porque sabes que la idea original, el alma de la historia, no se va a perder en el camino, el libro la rompió en Europa y en un montón de países, y cuando ves la película, entiendes por qué esta historia le pega a tanta gente de culturas tan distintas, la idea es simplemente brillante y la ejecutan con una elegancia increíble.. la película sigue a tres mujeres, en tres continentes diferentes, que no tienen ni la más mínima idea de que las otras existen.
Al principio, te metes de lleno en sus vidas, que no tienen nada que ver entre sí, y por un momento te preguntas, "ok, ¿y esto a dónde va? ¿Son como tres cortos juntos?".. pero hay una confianza en cómo te cuentan la historia que te hace saber que sus caminos se van a cruzar, y la pura emoción de ir descubriendo cómo se va a tejer ese hilo que las conecta es la mitad de la magia. Her story hits you hard, like a bucket of cold water. She is an "untouchable," a Dalit, and her struggle is depicted with such raw realism, almost like a documentary, that it truly gets under your skin. You feel the dust from the road and the weight of injustice. The actress, Mia Maelzer, is a lioness, and her whole world revolves around giving her little daughter a better future, one where she isn't treated as if she doesn't exist. The discrimination she faces is brutal, and you see her make this incredibly brave decision to risk everything for the promise that her daughter can get an education. Her journey is pure grit, pure intensity, a testament to the infinite power of a mother's love, and honestly, it's one of those stories that stays with you for days after watching the film. Then, from there, the movie takes us to Italy, and the tone changes completely. It becomes this super beautiful, romantic story. There we meet Giulia, a girl whose family has been in the wig-making business for a century. When her father has a terrible accident, it's up to her to keep the business afloat, only to realize it's on the brink of bankruptcy. To top it all off, her family wants to fix it with an arranged marriage—imagine the pressure—but she, obviously, isn't going to let that happen. She decides to fight and finds an ally and even a romance in a super kind Sikh immigrant. The actress, Fotinì Peluso, has an incredible energy that makes you root for her from the very first minute. Her story feels like a warm hug after the intensity of Smita's. Lastly, we land in Montreal with Sarah, played by Kim Raver, whom you might recognize. She is a total badass: a brilliant lawyer at a very tough firm, a single mom of three—basically, she does it all. Her life is a perfectly organized chaos, but when she's diagnosed with a serious illness, her entire world threatens to collapse. The problem is, she feels she has to keep it a secret. In her cutthroat job, any sign of weakness is like throwing blood to the sharks. This part of the movie is super relatable. And the visual contrast between the cold, almost soulless office and the warm, chaotic mess of her home perfectly captures her internal conflict. It makes you think about the million-dollar question: how long can you sacrifice your own well-being for your career? >Primero, conocemos a Smita en la India.. su historia te pega durísimo, te cae como un balde de agua fría, es una "intocable", una dalit, y su lucha está grabada con un realismo tan crudo, casi como si fuera un documental, que neta te llega hasta los huesos, sientes el polvo del camino y el peso de la injusticia.. la actriz, Mia Maelzer, es una leona, y todo su mundo gira en torno a darle a su hijita un futuro mejor, uno donde no la traten como si no existiera. La discriminación que vive es brutal, y la ves tomar esta decisión mega valiente de arriesgarlo todo por la promesa de que su hija pueda estudiar, su viaje es pura garra, pura intensidad, una prueba del poder infinito del amor de una madre y, la neta, es de esas historias que se te quedan grabadas días después de ver la película. Luego, de ahí, la peli nos lleva a Italia y el tono cambia por completo.. se convierte en esta historia súper bonita, romántica, ahí conocemos a Giulia, una chica cuya familia lleva un siglo en el negocio de hacer pelucas, cuando su papá tiene un accidente horrible, a ella le toca levantar el trabajo, solo para darse cuenta de que el negocio está a punto de quebrar.. para acabarla, su familia quiere arreglarlo con una boda arreglada —imagínense la presión—, pero ella, obvio, no se va a dejar.
Decide pelearla y encuentra un aliado y hasta un romance en un inmigrante sij súper buena onda, la actriz, Fotinì Peluso, tiene una energía increíble que hace que la animes desde el minuto uno. Su historia se siente como un apapacho calientito después de la intensidad de la de Smita, por último, caemos en Montreal con Sarah, que la interpreta Kim Raver, chance y la ubican.. es una chingona con todas sus letras: una abogada de geniales en un despacho súper complicado, mamá soltera de tres hijos, básicamente una todóloga, su vida es un desmadre perfectamente organizado, pero cuando le diagnostican una enfermedad grave, todo su mundo amenaza con venírsele abajo. El pedo es que siente que tiene que guardárselo.. en su trabajo, que es súper salvaje, cualquier señal de debilidad es como echarle sangre a los tiburones, esta parte de la película es súper fácil de conectar. You're never just waiting to get back to one character; you're fully invested in all three, jumping from one continent to another without ever feeling that one story matters less. For a long time, the only thing connecting them is that "little thread" of what it means to be a woman under brutal pressure. But then, towards the end... wow, the ending. I won't spoil it for you, but the way their destinies finally cross in a real, physical way... it's a true delight. It's such a beautiful, moving, and powerful revelation. It's a poem to the courage of women, a celebration of those invisible bonds that connect us all. Ludovico Einaudi's music is the perfect glue; his score is so beautiful and flows so seamlessly between India, Italy, and Canada that you barely notice the transitions. And the cinematography, the way the film looks, creates an incredible visual language that ties everything together. This film opens your eyes to tolerance and empathy. It doesn't preach at you; instead, it immerses you in each woman's reality, making you understand why they make the choices they do when their backs are against the wall. It forces you to ask: "What would I do in their place?". It reminds you to be brave, true to your dreams, and to what really matters. It's a super powerful and inspiring message. Now, if I'm being totally honest—and you know I always am—the way they connect at the end, while super emotional, did leave me with some questions. It touches on some very interesting cultural and ethical issues about how we're connected in the world and about privilege, which the film doesn't fully resolve, and which, honestly, would make for a great post-movie debate. But that small doubt doesn't take away from how ambitious it is or the emotional punch it delivers. In fact, it might even make it more interesting. So, my final verdict? I give it a solid 8.5/10. It's excellent, deeply moving, and incredibly beautifully made. It's a film that champions women without being simplistic, and it does so with enormous skill and heart. Go see it. I promise you'll leave moved, inspired, and maybe even feeling a little stronger. It's the kind of cinema that reminds you of its power to connect us all on a very human level. Take care, bye-bye! >Lo que está increíble es cómo la directora, Laetitia Colombani, le da el mismo peso a cada historia, nunca estás nomás esperando a que regresen con un personaje; estás metidísimo en las tres, brincando de un continente a otro sin sentir jamás que una historia importa menos. Por un buen rato, lo único que las conecta es ese "hilito" del tema de lo que significa ser mujer bajo una presión brutal.. pero luego, hacia el final... uff, el final. No se los voy a spoilear, pero la forma en que sus destinos por fin se cruzan de una manera real, física... es una verdadera delicia, es una revelación tan bonita, tan conmovedora y tan poderosa. Es un poema al valor de las mujeres, una celebración de esos lazos invisibles que nos conectan a todos.. la música de Ludovico Einaudi es el pegamento perfecto, su música es tan bonita y fluye tan bien entre la India, Italia y Canadá, que ni lo sientes, y la fotografía, la forma en que se ve la peli, crea un lenguaje visual increíble que une todo.
Esta película te abre los ojos a la tolerancia y la empatía, no te echa un sermón, sino que te mete de lleno en la realidad de cada mujer, haciéndote entender por qué toman las decisiones que toman cuando están entre la espada y la pared. Te obliga a preguntarte: "¿Y yo qué haría en su lugar?". Te recuerda que hay que ser valiente, fiel a tus sueños y a lo que de verdad importa, es un mensaje súper poderoso e inspirador.. ahora, si les soy totalmente honesto —y ya saben que siempre lo soy—, la forma en que se conectan al final, aunque es súper emotiva, sí me dejó con algunas preguntas, toca unos temas culturales y éticos bien interesantes sobre cómo estamos conectados en el mundo y sobre el privilegio, que la película no resuelve del todo, y que la verdad, daría para un debate buenísimo después.
Pero esa pequeña duda no le quita para nada lo ambiciosa que es ni el madrazo que te da.. de hecho, tal vez y hasta la hace más interesante. Así que, ¿mi veredicto final? Le doy un sólido 8.5/10. Es excelente, te mueve un montón y está hecha con una belleza increíble.. es una película que defiende a las mujeres sin ser simplona, y lo hace con una maestría y un corazón enormes, vayan a verla. Les prometo que van a salir conmovidos, inspirados y hasta sintiéndose un poquito más fuertes.. es de ese tipo de cine que te recuerda el poder que tiene para conectarnos a todos a un nivel súper humano.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy!
