My crochet student got her first order and I couldn't be more excited!

About two months ago,

and although I wasn't sure as to how things would turn out, we both embarked on a mutually uplifting journey.

There are students who make teaching very exhausting but luckily, my student is different. She's a very smart, curious, disciplined and easily-going young girl. To top it all up, she makes teaching so easy courtesy of how fast she grasps concepts. Sometimes I wonder how I would have turned out if I had a crocheter teacher. Would I be as smart as my first student? Or would I be that student that would frustrate a teacher? I guess we'll never know.

During one of our recent classes, she mentioned that she got her very first crochet order from a relative of hers, a mesh shrug. I was really happy about this. I went ahead to tell her the type of yarn she should get for the project if she was looking to deliver something that can last long and the tools she would need as well.

Two classes later, she came with all the items and we got to work. I told her that a crochet shrug is one of the easiest things to make and this kinda fueled her desire and determination even more.

However, everything was in order except the measurements. I hadn't outrightly taught her how to take measurements for crochet items, so I felt this may be a bit of a hiccup. After discussing at length how the crochet shrug was going to turn out and how we were going to improvise for the measurements, we got to work.

We started with the front panel using a regular mesh pattern and in about two hours, she was done with the front panel. We made provisions for the neck hole and then proceeded to make the back panel. According to her, her client wanted the back panel of the shrug to be a few inches longer than the front and with short sleeves too. I haven't made a crochet shrug this way before but I was open to trying it out. After all, we learn everyday.

After making the front panel, she began with the first arm hole and this was when her mother called. We were so engrossed in the project that we didn't realize four hours had gone by. Her mother seemed worried because in contrast to her two hour classes, she had been gone longer.

This was the point when I urged her to take the project home and complete it, against her will. Left to her, she would sit there and complete the entire project, hehe. Since we weren't entirely sure of the measurements, I told her she may have to lose the whole project and start from scratch if her client was dissatisfied but thankfully, that didn't happen. Our approximation was on point and that was a relief.

First off, I must commend her speed. She was so fast and this was very encouraging. Second, according to her, her client was very pleased with how it turned out and how well it fit. The true beauty of a crochet shrug can be observed when worn on the body but sadly, I couldn't capture the piece on the client's body.

I'm really pleased at the speed with which we're taking on and completing crochet projects. Soon enough, I may produce yet another promising crochet entrepreneur. Also, what do you think of my student's first order?

En primer lugar, debo elogiar su rapidez. Fue muy rápida y eso fue muy alentador. En segundo lugar, según ella, su cliente quedó muy satisfecho con el resultado y con lo bien que le quedaba. La verdadera belleza de un bolero de ganchillo se aprecia cuando se lleva puesto, pero, lamentablemente, no pude fotografiar la prenda en el cuerpo del cliente.
