🧅 1 onion, chopped, select a fresh local option
🧄 3 cloves garlic, minced, local or imported as per availability
🥕 2 carrots, sliced, your preferred brand or local
🥔 2 potatoes, cubed, locally sourced
🍅 2 tomatoes, chopped, fresh and ripe from the market
🌶️ 1 tablespoon tomato paste, such as Mutti Tomato Paste
🌿 1 teaspoon ground coriander, McCormick or another brand of choice
🧂 Salt, e.g., Morton Salt
🌶️ 1 teaspoon ground black pepper, McCormick or another choice
🌿 1 teaspoon paprika, your preferred brand
🌱 Fresh cilantro for garnish, local and fresh
💧 2 tablespoons olive oil, like Filippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil
🌿 1 tablespoon butter, President or any preferred brand

Instructions

1- Prepare the Bread (Msemen):

  • If using store-bought msemen, heat the flatbreads slightly in a pan until warm.
  • If making homemade msemen, follow your trusted msemen recipe to prepare and set aside.

2- Prepare the Sauce:

  • In a large pot, such as a Le Creuset Dutch Oven, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat until the butter melts.
  • Add chopped onions and garlic, sautéing until golden and aromatic.
  • Add your chosen meat to the pot, browning all sides thoroughly.

3- Add Vegetables and Seasonings:

  • Stir in carrots, potatoes, and tomatoes, allowing them to cook for about 5 minutes.
  • Add tomato paste and mix well to coat all ingredients evenly.
  • Sprinkle in ground coriander, salt, black pepper, and paprika, stirring to integrate the spices into the mixture.

4- Simmer:

  • Cover the ingredients with water, bring to a simmer, then cover the pot.
  • Let it cook on low heat until the meat becomes tender and the flavors meld, about 45 minutes to 1 hour.

5- Assembly:

  • Break msemen into bite-sized pieces and arrange them on serving plates.
  • Once the sauce is ready, ladle the savory mixture over the msemen generously.
  • Garnish with fresh cilantro.

6- Serve:

  • Serve hot, allowing the msemen to soak up the lush sauce.
