We've all been there. You spend weeks months even, building a system or a plan that feels perfect.
You're being busy AND productive. You're following all the right advice....
... And then... the market shifts, a platform changes its algorithm, or a new competitor appears on the scene.
All that hard work starts to feel like it's flying uselessly out the window.
Don't Just Work Hard, Be Adaptable
In the fast-paced online world, the only constant is change. What works today might be obsolete tomorrow. I’ve seen countless people get stuck in a rut because they were too rigid with their approach. Indeed my football club Rangers have hired a new coach, and he only knows one strategy.They cling to a strategy that was once successful, even as the landscape changed around them. Just like the managers at Rangers and Manchester United football clubs... The strategy does not work anymore, they are too rigid and will not change.
In the online world I had a friend who built a huge following on a social media platform a few years ago. He was a master of the algorithm and had his content production down to a science. But then the platform made a major update that completely tanked his reach. Instead of pivoting to a new strategy or a different platform he insisted he knew what he was doing and it would work. He doubled down and tried to "out-work" the algorithm. He just kept running faster on that same treadmill, and eventually he burned out and now does not have any social media accounts that he works!
This is where the concept of the pivot becomes so important. A pivot isn't about giving up ... oh fluff no ... it's about changing direction based on new information.
It's an essential and vital part of working smarter.
How to Practice the Pivot
Okay enough with the theory but how do you become more adaptable?
- 1. Always be learning:
Perhaps I am biased, I do have a masters in knowledge management and am always wanting to learn something.
Pay attention to trends in your niche. Follow the leaders and innovators. Don't just focus on what's working for you right now, but what's starting to work for others. This helps you spot a storm on the horizon before it hits. See that trend coming and jump on it!
- 2. Listen to Your Audience:
(and Your Data): Your community will often give you clues about what they need or what they’re excited about. Look at your analytics. Which content is performing well? What posts are getting the most engagement? This data is your most valuable feedback loop. It tells you when it's time to adjust your course.
- 3. The truth is, your initial plan is almost never the final one:
Be willing to experiment. Launch a small test. Try a new content format.
If it doesn't work, that's okay! It's not a failure; it’s a lesson. Every test gives you data that helps you pivot toward a better solution.
I remember at school my class teacher telling me ... There should be no mistakes only lessons learned!
Think of it this way: hard work gets you on the road, but adaptability is your Sat Nav! It reroutes you when there’s a traffic jam or a road closure. Without it, you’re just stuck in one lane, endlessly honking your horn.
