Teaching a Teen the Art of Dressmaking

Hello, dear Hive friends, I hope you are all having a lovely day as we usher in another amazing weekend. Yay! Thank God it's Friday.

As usual, I spent my day sewing, but more interestingly, teaching my new student how to make a basic gown/dress. It's a good thing to excel in a field, and even better when we can share the knowledge we have with others. Which reminds me of a popular proverb in my country, which says, 'Teach me how to fish, don't just give me the fish you catch alone'.

So it was my delight when this beautiful teenager in my neighborhood, Chioma, came to me not just to always have a new dress made by me, but also to be taught how to make beautiful dresses herself. In this age where our youths and teenagers can easily get distracted with one vice or the other, being able to channel that youthful energy into learning a new skill is commendable, so I wasted no time to get her started on the training, of course, after receiving approval from her mum, who was grateful as well.
Today, I taught her how to make this dress using scuba fabric and the princess dart method.
Cutting And Sewing Process

I started by using a pattern paper to draft the bodice pattern, which I transferred to the fabric, The front has a V-neckline
While the back has two separate pieces and a round neckline

- Next, I cut out facings, which I used to turn the front and back necline

- Then I held in the darts and joined the front and back by their sides

Continuing, I cut out the short sleeve pattern
I also sewed in a zipper to the back of the dress

- Finally, I sewed the sleeves to both armhole areas and hemmed the base of the dress, look how beautiful it turned out.
She said she will be gifting this dress to her mum. I could not agree less, I think her mum would be proud to see her daughter learning eagerly, and already, she has a dress to show off, And that's one of the joys sewing brings.
