Leyendo las redes sociales es imposible no sacudir la cabeza de lado a lado. Por supuesto, la "democratización de la ignorancia" es un hecho y jamás puedes combatir tal realidad, dejando la boca cerrada o -como en nuestro caso- intentar escribir algo medianamente digerible sobre la supuesta "Serie del Caribe" que se escenifica en México. Y hablamos de supuestos porque un evento llamado así, al cual no asistan Venezuela, Cuba, Colombia y Nicaragua (solo por poner algunos nombres), debiera llamarse de otra manera. Para colmo de males a los genios del lado venezolano, se les ocurrió organizar el "Torneo de las Américas", un campeonato con un nombre mucho más aspiracional, pero al cual no asisten las principales potencias del continente (llámese Estados Unidos, Canadá o la República Dominicana, por colocar algunos ejemplos). Da risa ver el monumental "Simón Bolívar" vacío, demostrando la falta de interés y rentabilidad del torneo, cuando la verdad ha sido un experimento que jamás debió darse.

And we say “supposed” because an event with that name, which Venezuela, Cuba, Colombia, and Nicaragua (just to name a few) are not attending, should be called something else. To make matters worse for the geniuses on the Venezuelan side, they came up with the idea of organizing the “Tournament of the Americas,” a championship with a much more aspirational name, but one that is not attended by the continent's major powers (namely the United States, Canada, and the Dominican Republic, to name a few). It is laughable to see the monumental “Simón Bolívar” stadium empty, demonstrating the lack of interest and profitability of the tournament, when the truth is that it has been an experiment that should never have taken place.

La serie del caribe nació hace muchos años con la idea de enfrentar a los campeones de cada torneo de pelota invernal, desarrollado por los países afiliados a la MLB. Ya de entrada hay restricciones para traer equipos a disputar esta serie. Aquellos países que no tienen ligas organizadas o las tienen, pero son consideradas de niveles menores a doble "A", no tienen boleto para asistir. En el caso de Cuba, ha sido el componente político el que ha impedido a la isla competir. Dicho esto, se formó la Confederación de Béisbol del Caribe, un organismo para hacer contrapeso a las oficinas del comisionado de la MLB, muy dada a restringir a los peloteros naturales de los países afiliados (Dominicana, Puerto Rico, México y Venezuela), a jugar en los campeonatos locales. And why are we talking about the “Caribbean decline”? The Caribbean Series was created many years ago with the idea of bringing together the champions of each winter baseball tournament organized by countries affiliated with MLB. From the outset, there are restrictions on which teams can participate in this series. Countries that do not have organized leagues, or have them but are considered to be below double-A level, are not eligible to participate. In the case of Cuba, it has been the political component that has prevented the island from competing. That said, the Caribbean Baseball Confederation was formed as a counterweight to the MLB commissioner's office, which was very keen to restrict players from affiliated countries (the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Venezuela) from playing in local championships. Muchas otras razones, como la restricción de jugadores firmados en las mayores, quienes al terminar los campeonatos locales, son obligados a descansar antes de los entrenamientos primaverales.
