The Wat Mahathat which is located in the city of Ayutthaya and still stands as a heritage was constructed in the late 14th century during the reign of King Borommarachathhirat built near the royal palace this temple in its time symbolized the close relationship between the monarchy and Buddhism.

The Wat Mahathat in its prime time served as the seat of the Supreme Patriarch of Buddhism in the city of Ayutthaya but unfortunately in 1767, Ayutthaya fell to the Burmese army and like much of the city Wat Mahathat was heavily damaged towers collapsed and many Buddhist statues were beheaded and the temple was abandoned. Over the many years that followed nature reclaimed the ruins intertwining tree roots with stone and brick.
