Annual Reward For Idiots

Brother is ill. He looks different, not like me. He's swollen, and Wolf says he has to go home, that he can’t live in the forest. And then there are the eggs.

"There’s no one like you," the bear growls. "Do you want a lick of honey?"

His paw is stuck in a honeycomb that he snatched away not too long ago.

Dragon looks surprised.

"Paddington?"

"Yes," says the bear, smacking his lips as he licks his paw. "You better be quick, or I’ll eat it."

"Where are the bees? Do you have them—"

There’s a loud buzzing sound. A dark cloud comes rushing out of the forest and has it in for the honey thief.

"Help!"* screams Paddington. "Save me, Dragon!"

"There’s the thief!" buzzes a worker bee. "You’re done for. Attack, girls!"

Dragon blows a cloud of smoke into the air.

"Madam, can we have a word?"

"No way! We’ve had enough of that rude glutton. He doesn’t belong here. He’s a circus bear or something—we’ll chase him out of the forest once and for all!"

The bees buzz furiously; they look like a thundercloud.

"Will you leave him alone if I take him to the desert?" Dragon shouts. "I’d rather not set you on fire to protect my friend."

"Desert?" buzzes a bee. "He won’t come back?"

Dragon shrugs. "I don’t know, but not for now."

After a buzzing discussion, the bees leave.

"That was close," Paddington sighs. "Thank you. You’re the best friend I’ve ever had. But what do you mean, I have to go to the desert?

"You deserve the annual reward of idiots! We’re going home with Brother, and you’re coming with us. I told you he’s sick, and he can’t travel alone."

"But what about the honey?"

"Didn’t you listen to what the bees said?"

"You can set them on fire, blow them away, can’t you?"
