Today I'd like to share my thoughts on a book my wife and daughters gave me a year ago, a story that inspired television series and even films, setting a precedent, but also revealing the sad reality that was experienced, and I believe is still experienced, in some areas not only of Colombia but of the world. I'm referring to *Sin Tetas No Hay Paraíso* by Gustavo Bolívar.

Hoy me gustaría compartir con ustedes mi opinión acerca de un libro que me regalaron hace año mi esposa e hijas, una historia que inspiró series de televisión y hasta películas, marcando un precedente, pero mostrando la triste realidad que se vivió y creo que aún se vive en algunas zonas no solo de Colombia sino del mundo. Me refiero a Sin Tetas No Hay Paraíso de Gustavo Bolívar.

This book tells the difficult story of Catalina, a young woman living in Pereira, Colombia. She dreams of becoming an actress, of being famous, and of having enough money to help her seamstress mother. Her inspiration comes from the young women in her neighborhood who leave on weekends and return a couple of days later wearing designer clothes and accessories, their pockets overflowing with cash. To make matters worse, a 15-year-old girl nicknamed La Diabla advises her that to achieve such success, she only needs to get breast implants, because only voluptuous women achieve that kind of success. So, Catalina gradually disregards the advice of her boyfriend, Alveiro, who tells her that she shouldn't get surgery because she's beautiful just the way she is. This leads her to become immersed in the world of prostitution, where she experiences its lowest aspects: parties, excesses, and dangers. Later, she even becomes the partner of Marcial (an influential drug trafficker), but little by little, her life crumbles like a house of cards. Playing cards, she experiences betrayal from her best friend and even her own mother and boyfriend; the world shows her that not everything is about beauty and money, that there are things you simply cannot buy.

"Catalina never imagined that the prosperity and happiness of her generation hung on the size of her bra. She understood that afternoon when Yesica explained to her, without any mercy, why the man she had been waiting for with such excitement had stood her up at her doorstep. 'Because of your breasts! Titi preferred to take Paola because yours are too small, my friend!'"

Este libro nos cuenta la difícil historia de Catalina, una jovencita que vive en la ciudad de Pereira, Colombia, sueña con ser actriz, ser famosa y tener dinero suficiente para ayudar a su madre costurera, la inspiración que tiene son las jovencitas que viven en su barrio, las cuales se van los fines de semana y regresan un par de días después vistiendo ropa y accesorios de marca, con los bolsillos repletos de dinero, para colmo una chica de 15 años a quien apodan La Diabla le aconseja que para alcanzar tal éxito solo debe ponerse implantes de senos, porque solo las mujeres voluptuosas alcanzan tal éxito, así que Catalina poco a poco menosprecia los consejos de su novio Alveiro, que le dice que ella se no debería operarse porque tal como es es muy bonita, de esta manera ella termina sumergida en el mundo de la prostitución donde experimenta lo más bajo de ese mundo, las fiestas, los excesos, los peligros, después termina incluso convirtiéndose en la pareja de Marcial (un narcotraficante influyente) pero poco a poco su vida se desmorona como un castillo de naipes, experimenta la traición de su mejor amiga y hasta de su propia madre y su novio, el mundo le demuestra que no todo se trata de belleza y dinero, que hay cosas que simplemente no puedes comprar.

"Catalina nunca imaginó que la prosperidad y la felicidad de su generación quedaba suspendida a la talla de su brasier. Lo entendió aquella tarde en que Yesica le explicó, sin misericordia alguna, porqué el hombre que ella esperaba con tanta ilusión, la dejó plantada en la puerta de su casa. —¡Por las tetas! El Titi prefirió llevarse a Paola porque usted las tiene muy pequeñas, parcera!"

This book undoubtedly set a precedent in the Colombian entertainment world, as it gave rise to successful television series that subsequently opened the door to much more content of this type, even going so far as to glorify narco-culture. However, there is a huge difference between this book and those series that later aired on television: Gustavo Bolívar, through his narrative, does not intend to glorify the image of the drug trafficker or present him as a true hero, but rather to show the reality experienced in some regions, where girls are conditioned by the few opportunities for dignified advancement available to them. There, predators emerge as "heroes" laden with luxuries that these girls could only dream of possessing, displaying lavish lifestyles that would dazzle anyone. But this is nothing more than an ephemeral thrill that ends as soon as the predator tires of his new toy, and then comes fear, pain, loneliness, and sadness. The author shows us, without mincing words or euphemisms, the reality behind that world of opulence.

Este libro sin lugar a dudas marcó un precedente en el mundo del entretenimiento colombiano, ya que dio pie a exitosas series de televisión que posteriormente abrieron la puerta a mucho más contenido de este tipo, llegando incluso a exaltar la narcocultura, sin embargo existe una diferencia grandísima entre este libro, y esas series que posteriores llegaron a la televisión, y es que con su narración Gustavo Bolívar no pretende exaltar la imagen del Narcotraficante o presentarlo como un héroe real, sino mostrar la realidad que se vive en algunas regiones, donde las niñas son condicionadas por las pocas oportunidades de superación dignas que se le presentan, allí, los depredadores surgen como "héroes" cargados de lujos que ellas antes solo podían soñar con poseer, mostrando estilos de vida fastuosos que deslumbrarían a cualquiera, pero aquello no es más que una diversión efímera que se termina tan pronto como el depredador se aburre de su nuevo juguete, y entonces viene el miedo, el dolor, la soledad, la tristeza. El autor nos muestra sin tapujos y sin eufemismos la realidad detrás de ese mundo de opulencia.

The novel is a cry for help for those women or girls immersed in that world of objectification, a warning for modern society and especially for young people who are led astray by stereotypes dictated by the needs of predators, who put a price on the body as if it were a vile product. So I enjoyed reading it because, despite being very intense (not recommended for sensitive people), especially everything related to the initial deception that Catalina suffers and how she ends up negotiating her own virginity, it somehow dismantles the fantasy that many people still have about the world of drug trafficking. People who think that making a lot of money in just one weekend would be idyllic, but ignore that behind it all are humiliations, abuses, dehumanization, betrayals, envy, and dangers of all kinds.

La novela es un grito de auxilio para aquellas mujeres o niñas que están sumergidas en ese mundo de cosificación, una alerta para la sociedad moderna y en especial para la juventud que se deja llevar por estereotipos marcados por las necesidades de los depredadores, que le pone precio al cuerpo como si se tratase de un vil producto, así que disfruté la lectura porque a pesar de que es muy fuerte (no recomendado para personas sensibles) en especial todo lo que respecta al engaño inicial que sufre Catalina y que termina de esta manera negociando su propia doncellez, de alguna manera desmonta la fantasía que muchas personas aún tienen respecto al mundo del narcotráfico, personas que piensan que ganarse mucho dinero en tan solo un fin de semana sería idílico, pero ignoran que detrás de todo aquello están las humillaciones, las vejaciones, la deshumanización, las traiciones, las envidias y los peligros de todo tipo.

The ending is not idyllic because the novel aims to illustrate the reality of women who give in to stubbornness. It seeks to teach a lesson about the potential fate of those who live in a superficial world and ignore their own conscience. Thus, Catalina's fate is graphic and sad (and this isn't a spoiler, as it's foreshadowed from the beginning), but it serves to illustrate the self-destruction that results from the pursuit of false ideals and the loss of moral values. However, it's also a warning to families who tend to neglect their children. Adolescence is a difficult stage, where no one is content with their body; it's precisely the stage where we tend to seek these false ideals, and it's there that teenagers become easy prey. Therefore, parents, teachers, and society in general should be vigilant.

El final no es idílico porque la novela pretende ilustrar la realidad de las mujeres que se dejan llevar por la terquedad, pretende aleccionar sobre como podría ser el destino de aquellos que viven un mundo de superficialidad y desoyen su propia consciencia, de modo que el desenlace de Catalina es gráfico y triste (y no es un spoiler ya que desde un inicio se presume) pero sirve para ilustrar la autodestrucción a la que conduce la búsqueda de ideales falsos y la pérdida de valores morales, sin embargo es también un llamado de alerta para las familias que tienden a descuidar a sus hijos, la adolescencia es una etapa difícil, donde nadie está conforme con su cuerpo, precisamente es la etapa donde tendemos a buscar estos falsos ideales y es allí donde los adolescentes se convierten en presas fáciles, así que tanto los padres, como los maestros y la sociedad en general debería estar alerta.

If you have the opportunity to read this book, I assure you that you won't regret it. It's essential for understanding the reality behind the myth and the narco-culture.
