A Magical Encounter in Waterland: Swimming with the Dolphins of Margarita
The Caribbean sun was already kissing the island of Margarita when I received that unexpected call. It was Carlos, my great childhood friend, who now worked as a dolphin trainer in a place that had always fascinated me: Waterland. “Hey, what are you doing this weekend? I have a surprise for you,” he said with his usual contagious enthusiasm. The surprise, to my amazement and absolute delight, was an invitation to spend the day with him, and what was even more incredible, to swim with his dolphins!
Waterland, a theme park dedicated to marine life, is one of the island's most beloved attractions. But seeing it “from the inside,” guided by someone who knows every corner and, above all, every animal, was a unique opportunity. Carlos met me first thing on Saturday morning. When we arrived, instead of going to the visitor area, he led me behind the scenes, where the dolphin pool stretched out, sparkling and blue, under the sky.
I felt a lump in my throat. Seeing these majestic creatures up close, outside the context of a show, was mesmerizing. There were three dolphins in that group: Aura, the most playful; Neptune, the largest and calmest; and Brisas, the most curious. Carlos introduced me to each one, almost as if they were coworkers. He explained the training routine they follow, emphasizing that everything is based on positive reinforcement, affection, and play. “It's not about forcing them,” he explained passionately, “but inviting them to participate. It's a relationship of mutual respect.”
It was fascinating to watch how they prepared food and how they used different gestures and whistles to communicate. He let me throw a couple of balls to them and see how they returned them with natural grace. Then came the moment I had been waiting for. With some nervousness and a lot of excitement, I put on the vest and approached the edge. Carlos gave me the key instructions: slow movements, a soft voice, and above all, enjoy the moment.
As I slid into the warm water, I felt a wave of peace. And then there was Aura, approaching with a natural smile on her face. The feeling of her smooth, strong skin to the touch was something I will never forget. Carlos guided me to take her fins and, in an act of pure magic, propelled me through the pool. It was a brief “ride,” but one that lasted an eternity in my memory: pure power, intelligence, and joy overflowing around me.
We spent the afternoon in the trainers' lounge, where Carlos continued to tell me stories. He told me that the most beautiful thing about his job is the unique personality of each dolphin and how, despite their training, they always find ways to surprise him with an impromptu game or pirouette.
I returned home that night with a heart swollen with gratitude. Not only for the gift of swimming with these beautiful and noble animals, but for the opportunity to see the respect and love that my friend Carlos and his colleagues have for their work. It was a weekend that taught me about the incredible connection that can exist between humans and the marine world, a magical memory etched forever in my mind.
