Breville Barista Pro Espresso Machine, 2 liters, Brushed Stainless Steel, BES878BSS

By: Lifestyle Lab

The Breville Barista Pro is the newest entry-level semi-automatic espresso machine from Breville, sitting above the Express but slightly below the dual boiler in the Breville espresso lineup. It features a new and improved thermo jet heating system that can get water up to a full brewing temperature in only 3 seconds, as well as improved steaming performance and a digital display.

The grinder on the Barista Pro has smaller steps in between each setting, giving you 30 positions to choose from instead of the 18 on the Express. This should allow for more fine-tuning options, but the grinder itself remains the same as the Express. The steaming pressure is also improved on the Barista Pro, taking closer to 45 seconds to steam a full cup of milk versus 60 seconds on the Express.

Overall, the Barista Pro offers some nice upgrades, but they are not enough to justify the extra cost over the Express. The thermo jet heating system and digital display are nice additions, but the grinder and steaming performance are not improved enough to make a difference in the quality of espresso.
