Turtles or tortoises, are they the same species? 🤔

The first animals we saw on our visit to the Doctor Leslie Pantin Zoo were tortoises, as they are known in the Venezuelan plains. The guide asked the group a very interesting question: Are turtles and tortoises the same animals or do they belong to different species? At that moment, there was an awkward silence, which the guide himself broke by telling us not to all answer at the same time. The adults shook their heads and the children just looked at the animals.

I was one of the first to answer with complete confidence, heh heh heh, and I said that they were NOT the same, because some were tortoises and others were galápagos. The guide very politely made no comment and explained that they are not the same because differences can be seen at first glance, but they do belong to the same species. 🤭🫣😵‍💫 In short, my answer was wrong, but the guide didn't make me feel bad or embarrassed in front of the others. Like a true professional, he explained that they are the same animals, but some have adapted to fresh water, like river turtles, others to salt water, like sea turtles, and others to land. In short, they are all reptiles of the order Chelonia.

¡Hola amigos bienvenidos a mi blog!, hoy quiero compartir algunas curiosidades sobre animales y cosas que aprendí en un paseo por una reserva natural, hace algunas semanas compartí una primera parte y si quieres tener información previa de este lugar puedes,

Tortugas o galápagos, ¿Es la misma especie? 🤔

Los primeros animales que vimos en la visita al Zoológico Doctor Leslie Pantin fueron los galápagos, como se les conoce en los llanos venezolanos. El guía hizo una pregunta al grupo muy interesante: ¿Las tortugas y los galápagos son los mismos animales o pertenecen a especies distintas? En ese instante hubo un silencio incómodo que el mismo guía interrumpió diciendo que no contestaramos todos al mismo tiempo 😬. Los adultos movían la cabeza y los niños presentes solo observaban a los animales.

Fui una de las primeras que respondió con total seguridad je, je, je y dije que NO eran iguales, porque unas eran tortugas y otras eran galápagos, el guía de forma muy educada no hizo ninguna expresión y explicó que no son iguales porque a simple vista se aprecian diferencias, pero Sí pertenecen a la misma especie, 🤭🫣😵‍💫 en pocas palabras, mi respuesta fue un error, pero el guía no me hizo sentir mal ni avergonzada en frente de los demás, él como todo un profesional, explicó que vienen siendo los mismos animales solo que algunos se adaptaron al agua dulce como las tortugas de río, otras a aguas saladas como las de mar, y otras a la tierra. En resumen, todos son reptiles del orden de los quelonios.

He also took the world's largest hard-shelled river turtle out of the water, as far as its species is concerned. This animal is strong and heavy, from what I could see.

I also took the opportunity to ask about some information given to me by a child from the Wayuu indigenous ethnic group, which means “people of the canoe” or “people of the water.” This ethnic group lives mainly in the Orinoco Delta in Venezuela, and I met them when I traveled to this area of the country. This boy told me that the wrinkles or lines on the shells of turtles or morrocoyes are marks that indicate their age, with each line representing five years, allowing us to calculate how old they are.

The guide told me that this is a popular method that has been used for years, but it has no scientific basis. 🥴😊

El guía volteó a algunos galápagos que son las tortugas de tierra, y dijo que eran de los animales más antiguos de la tierra, y explicó cómo se diferencian el macho de la hembra, el macho tiene hundida su caparazón interno lo que sería para nosotros la barriga, esto le facilita montarse encima de la hembra para el coito y la fecundación, también sacó del agua a la tortuga de río de caparazón duro más grande del mundo, en cuanto a la su clase. Este animal es fuerte y pesado por lo que pude observar.

También aproveché y salí de una duda sobre una información que me dio un niño de la etnia indígena wayuu que significa gente de canoa, o gente del agua, esta etnia habita principalmente en el Delta del Orinoco, en Venezuela, y los conocí cuando viajé a esta zona del país. Este niño me dijo que las arrugas o líneas que se les hace en el caparazón de las tortugas o morrocoyes son marcas que indican su edad, cada raya representa 5 años, y por allí podemos calcular cuantos años tienen de vida.

El guía me dijo que es una medida que se usa desde hace años y es popular, pero no tiene ninguna base científica. 🥴😊

Exotic birds

After the turtles, we moved on to the cages of some birds. I remind you that this is not an ordinary zoo; it is actually a nature reserve, and most of the animals here are either critically endangered or have been rescued from animal trafficking. Some individuals, after keeping them as pets, bring them to the reserve themselves because they realize that animals need to live in the wild, not in captivity or in residential homes. This enclosure serves as an animal protection center and a place to re-educate animals for reintroduction into the wild. They mention that in some cases they have been successful.

Is there racism among animals?

When we moved on to the birds, there were some I recognized as macaws with their beautiful colors, some parrots, but one black bird with a very unique curly crest I didn't recognize. It is the pajuí bird. I never saw it fly; it stayed on the ground walking. It is cute and very striking. In the same cage was a picure, a medium-sized rodent native to Venezuela and some South American countries. Its characteristic color is brown, black, or grayish, but if you look at the photograph I am sharing, it is white.

Aves exóticas

Después de las tortugas pasamos a las jaulas de algunas aves, les recuerdo que este no es un zoológico ordinario, en realidad es una reserva natural y los animales que están aquí en su mayoría son porque están en estado crítico de extinción, o han sido rescatados del tráfico de animales, incluso algunas personas particulares después de tenerlos como mascotas ellos mismos los llevan a la reserva porque terminan por darse cuenta de que la fauna animal necesita vivir en la naturaleza no en cautiverio ni es casas residenciales, por lo que este recinto sirve de protección animal, y de reeducación a los animales para una inserción en su vida salvaje, mencionan que en algunos casos lo han logrado.

¿Existe el racismo en los animales?

Cuando pasamos a las aves había unas que conocía como las guacamayas con sus colores hermosos, algunos loros, pero uno de color negro con un copete rizado bien singular, no lo conocía, es el pájaro pajuí en ningún momento no lo vi volar, se mantuvo en la tierra caminando. Es lindo y muy llamativo. En esa misma jaula estaba un picure que es un roedor de tamaño mediano y grande originario de Venezuela y algunos países de Sudamérica, su color característico es marrón, negro o grisáceo, pero sí te fijas en la fotografía que comparto es de color blanco.

The fact is that it was found and taken to the reserve. We are told that it hardly ever comes out during the day and spends its time under logs because it is blind and the light prevents it from seeing, as happens with humans who have the same condition. The guide asks us what we think about what has happened to this picure...

Este picure es de color blanco porque nació con albinismo y por causa de esa condición su familia animal lo rechazó y hasta lo hirieron tratando de alejarlo de la manada, el caso es que fue encontrado y lo llevaron a la reserva, nos cuentan que de día casi no sale se la pasa debajo de los troncos porque es ciego y la luz no lo deja ver, como sucede con los humanos que tienen esta misma condición, el guía nos pregunta que pensamos de lo que le ha sucedido a este picure…

Could it be that racism exists among animals?

The answer is NO. What happens is that because it is white, it is very noticeable to predators, and this endangers its entire family or litter. For this reason, they wanted it away from them. It is better to sacrifice one than the whole family. 😪🥴 I felt sorry for this animal, but nature is wise.

In the cage next door was the King Vulture, also known as the jungle condor or the royal condor. They are very large, beautiful, and elegant birds. When you look at them, you can sense their authority, which is something I can't explain logically 😅. I learned that these birds have no feathers on their necks. They are bare-skinned for an important reason: to keep themselves clean after lunch 🤣 Hehehe, that is, they eat freshly killed animals, not decomposed ones as is commonly thought. When they are full of blood and meat residue after eating, they go out into the sun to clean themselves and take care of their health. If they had feathers on their heads or necks, it would be difficult to stay clean after eating, and they could get sick. Nature is wise; they simply dry themselves in the sun and that's it.

¿Será que entre los animales existe el racismo?

La respuesta es NO, lo que sucede es que como es de color blanco, es muy llamativo para los depredadores y esto pone en peligro a toda su familia o la camada, por esta razón lo querían lejos de ellos, es mejor sacrificar a uno que a toda la familia. 😪🥴 me dio sentimiento por este animal, pero la naturaleza es sabia.

En la jaula de al lado, estaba el Rey Zamuro, también conocido como el cóndor de la selva, o el cóndor real, su tamaño es muy grande, son hermosos y elegantes, al mirarlo se percibe su autoridad, es algo que no puedo explicar de una forma lógica 😅, sobre esta ave aprendí que tienen su cuello sin plumaje, están pelados en piel por una razón importante, es para mantenerse limpio después del almuerzo 🤣 je, je, je, es decir ellos comen animales recién muertos, no descompuesto como se suele pensar, al llenarse de sangre y residuos de carne cuando terminan de comer se van a solear y así se limpian y cuidan su salud, si tuvieran plumas en su cabeza o cuello estar limpios después de comer sería complicado, y podrían enfermarse, la naturaleza es sabia, simplemente se secan con el sol y listo.

Fun facts about flamencos

I didn't expect to find this type of bird in this place. The whole group was surprised and enjoyed watching them up close. We know that the coral color of their plumage is due to their diet, which is rich in carotenoids, which are organic pigments (I wrote this part down 😅). Shrimp feed on plants that give them that color, and flamingos do the same when they eat shrimp. It's a colorful chain 😁.

Their color is beautiful and intense, but those three flamingos also have a sad story. They came to the reserve because their former owner could no longer keep them and they were living in an apartment, which caused an incurable disease in their legs, since apartment floors are hard and damage their legs. They need to be on soft ground or grass. People's ignorance and egos lead them to keep these exotic animals in harmful environments without realizing that they are killing them.

Curiosidades sobre los flamencos

No pensé encontrar este tipo de ave en este lugar, a todo el grupo nos sorprendió y nos agradó mirarlos de cerca, sabemos que el color coral de su plumaje se debe a su alimentación, que está rica en carotenoides que son pigmentos orgánicos (esta parte la anoté 😅) los camarones se alimentan de plantas que les da ese color, y los flamingos hacen los mismos al comerse los camarones, es una cadena colorida 😁.

Su color es hermoso e intenso, pero esos tres flamencos también tienen una historia triste, llegaron a la reserva porque su antiguo dueño ya no podía mantenerlos y estaban viviendo dentro de un apartamento lo que les causó una enfermedad incurable en sus patas, ya que el piso de un apartamento es duro y eso maltrata sus patas, ellos necesitan estar en tierra o pastos suaves, la ignorancia de las personas y sus egos los llevan a tener estos animales exóticos en ambientes perjudiciales sin saber que los están matando.

Although these animals are sick, they can still have a happy life ☺️. If you looked at the photos where they appear, you might wonder why they have mirrors in their spaces, what they are for, and what they mean. I asked the guide all these questions, and he said he was glad someone asked, as there are groups that overlook this detail and it is up to him to explain it to them without genuine curiosity. 😆😁.

Flamencos are social animals that like to live in flocks. The mirrors make them think there are more of them when they see themselves reflected in them. It's a little visual trick for their benefit so that they feel confident and begin to perform mating rituals. They feel motivated, and there is evidence of this because they rub their heads on the ground and sway with one leg raised, which is a sign that they are preparing to find a mate. I just hope they don't fall in love with their reflection in the mirror 🤣😂 and look to the sides.

Aunque estos animales están enfermos aún pueden tener una vida feliz ☺️, si observaste las fotos donde aparecen te preguntarás por qué tienen unos espejos en sus espacios, para qué sirven y que significan, todas esas preguntas se las hice al guía y él me dijo que estaba alegre de que alguien preguntará por eso, ya que hay grupos que pasan ese detalle desapercibido y le toca a él explicárselos sin una curiosidad genuina. 😆😁.

Los flamencos son animales sociales, que les gusta vivir en manadas, los espejos hacen que al verse en ellos reflejados crean que son más, es un pequeño engaño visual para su beneficio y así ellos se sientan en confianza y comiencen hacer rituales de apareamiento, ellos se sienten motivados y hay evidencia que se nota porque rozan la cabeza en la tierra y balancearse con una pata elevada es señal de que se prepara para encontrar pareja, solo espero que no se enamore de su reflejo en el espejo 🤣😂 y mire a los lados.

Frogs in reproduction

All animals, no matter how small or large, are important to the ecosystem and the world, even a tiny little frog 😁. In this reserve, they also breed a special frog. It is fluorescent green and black, cute, and, if I remember correctly, also poisonous. Its danger lies mainly in being eaten by other animals, not in direct contact with humans. The fact is that this amphibian is critically endangered, which is why the reserve is doing everything possible to help them reproduce.

They are very small, and I was amused to see how my aunt looked at them, hehehe. I captured some of her expressions on camera. The reserve has a special room for this animal, with a special temperature and adequate lighting. All external factors are controlled to successfully bring this species out of its critical state of extinction. It is found only in Venezuela, specifically in the state of Aragua, where I live.

Ranas en reproducción

Todos los animales por muy pequeños o grandes que sean son importantes para el ecosistema y el mundo, incluso una diminuta ranita 😁, en esta reserva también crían una rana especial, su color es de verde y negro fluorescente, son lindas y si mal no recuerdo también venenosas, su peligro reside principalmente en la ingestión por parte de otros animales, no en el contacto directo con humanos el caso es que este anfibio está en peligro crítico de extinción y por eso en la reserva están haciendo todo lo posible para que se reproduzcan.

Son muy pequeños, y me causó gracia ver como mi tía los veía je, je, je, capture en la cámara alguna de sus expresiones. La reserva tiene una habitación especial para este animal, con una temperatura especial, una luz adecuada, tienen todos los factores externos controlados para lograr con éxito que esta especie salga del estado crítico de extinción que es únicamente de Venezuela y específicamente del estado Aragua, donde vivo.

Touching turtles

The Doctor Leslie Pantin Zoo nature reserve is a petting zoo, which means that some animals can be touched, including the small turtles. This experience was very rewarding for both children and adults. My aunt and my special brother, who accompanied me, were delighted, and I was very surprised that my brother felt safe touching these turtles, although he looks expressionless in that photo, but he is like that most of the time.

There were brief moments of rest, during which we took the opportunity to go to the bathroom, drink water, and sit down for a while. The reserve is very large, has beautiful trees, and offers total immersion in nature.

Tocando tortugas

La reserva natural Zoológico Doctor Leslie Pantin es un zoológico de contacto lo que quiere decir que algunos animales se pueden tocar, y entre ellos están las tortugas pequeñas, esta experiencia fue muy gratificante tanto para niños como adultos, mis acompañantes que fueron mi tía y hermano especial estaban encantados, y me sorprendió mucho que mi hermano sintiera la seguridad de tocar estas tortugas, aunque en esa foto se ve inexpresivo, pero él es así la mayoría del tiempo.

Hubo breves momentos de descanso, en el que aprovechamos para ir al baño, tomar agua y sentarnos un rato. La reserva es muy grande, tiene árboles hermosos y la inmersión en la naturaleza es total.

Lonely felines

Big cats are so beautiful that you want to take them home, especially when they are small. That's what happened to this beautiful puma, who was raised by a human and when she became an adult, he couldn't keep feeding her and decided to take her to the nature reserve. The people who conserve these animals don't want to accept that it's a crime to buy and raise wild animals to keep them in your home. Everything has its place and space, and depriving them of their nature will take away their happiness.

I asked the guide if so much solitude made her sick, because I felt sad to see her alone in the cage, and he replied that pumas are not social animals, they only join with others to procreate, they love to be alone.

Felinos solitarios

Los felinos grandes son tan hermosos que provocan llevarlos a casa, y más cuando están pequeños, eso le sucedió está bella, puma, que fue criada por un humano y cuando se hizo adulta no pudo mantener su alimentación y decidió llevarla a la reserva natural, las personas que conservan estos animales no quieren aceptar que es un delito comprar y criar animales salvajes para tenerlos en sus casas, todo tiene un lugar y un espacio, privarlos de su naturaleza les quitará felicidad.

Le pregunté al guía que si tanta soledad no la enfermería, pues yo me sentí triste por verla sola en la jaula y me respondió que los pumas no son animales sociales, solo se unen a otro para procrear, les encanta estar solos.

Spider monkeys with good taste

From felines we move on to spider monkeys, a species found in tropical forests from Mexico to Brazil. They belong to the primate genus Ateles, a Greek word meaning “imperfect development of their structure.” They were classified in this genus because they lack a thumb on their hands and have only three well-formed fingers. To compensate for this, nature has endowed them with a flexible and strong tail that helps them with mobility.

From what I could observe, they are agile, curious, and sociable animals. The whole group was able to see them up close behind a protective railing, and we were told not to bring anything close to them because they can snatch anything.

Monas Arañas con buen gusto

De los felinos pasamos a los monos arañas que son una especie que se encuentra en los bosques tropicales desde México a Brasil, pertenecen a los primates del género Ateles que es una palabra griega que significa desarrollo imperfecto de su estructura, se les clasificó en este género, ya que ellos carecen del dedo pulgar en sus manos y tienen solo tres dedos bien formados y como compensación de ese pulgar la naturaleza los dotó de una cola flexible y fuerte que los ayuda en la movilidad.

Por lo que pude observar son animales, ágiles, curiosos y sociables. Todo el grupo pudo verlos de cerca detrás de una baranda protectora y nos indicaron no acercar nada porque pueden arrancan cualquier cosa.

One of them had her baby on her back, and I assumed she was the mother, but looking at the photos, I'm a little confused by what I can see. The guide approached them and they got very excited, as they recognize people mainly by their scent, the guide emphasized, but then he found himself in a compromising situation when the monkey with the baby on its back decided to run its hand over his neck. I can't blame her, that monkey has good taste 😆🤣, and then several monkeys proceeded to rip off his microphone. Those were agonizing seconds, with screams from both humans and monkeys. In the end, no one was hurt, and that moment awakened all our senses to continue with the wonderful experience of this expedition.

Uno de ellos tenía en su espalda a su bebé, yo asumí que era la madre, pero viendo las fotos me confundo un poco por lo que se puede ver 🧐🤭. El guía se acercó a ellos y se excitaron mucho, pues reconocen a la persona por su olor principalmente recalcó el guía, pero luego estuvo en una situación comprometedora cuando el mono que tenía a su bebé en la espalda, decidió pasarle la mano por el cuello, no la puedo culpar esa mona tiene buen gusto 😆🤣, y después entre varios monos procedieron a arrancarle el micrófono. Fueron segundos angustiantes, se escucharon gritos de los humanos y de los monos también, al final nadie salió herido y ese momento nos despertó todos los sentidos para continuar con la maravillosa experiencia de esta expedición.

Me despido agradeciendo su tiempo, no pensé extenderme tanto en la publicación, pero me dejé llevar, aún tengo muchas cosas que contar; sin embargo, creo que es suficiente por hoy, nos vemos en los comentarios.
