Hello, friends and community. I definitely didn't want to miss the opportunity to participate in the Apis Hive First Contest - Random Objects, so I got to work creating a series of personalized objects with the theme. Today, I'm sharing this entry with all the detailed processes. It took me quite a bit of time compared to other Hive contests, but I am very happy with the result—extremely customized and useful. Sin duda, no quería perder la oportunidad de participar en el Apis Hive First Contest - Random Objects, así que me puse manos a la obra para crear una serie de objetos personalizados con la temática. Hoy les comparto esta entrada con todo el proceso detallado. Me tomó bastante tiempo en comparación con otros concursos de Hive, pero estoy muy contento con el resultado: extremadamente personalizado y útil. ¡Acompáñenme en este recorrido!

The Sketch:

Every idea starts with a sketch, perhaps as an initial way to visualize the final result. So I began sketching—of course—bees, lots of bees. There’s no need to overcomplicate things or look for difficult concepts; when we hear the word Hive, the first thing that comes to mind is bees.

El boceto: Toda idea parte de un boceto, quizás como una primera forma de visualizar el resultado. Así que comencé boceteando -por supuesto- abejas, muchas abejas. For this project, I drew inspiration from a well-known video game: Cuphead, and its distinct drawing style, which evokes 1930s animation influenced by Fleischer Studios and Walt Disney shorts. After several concepts, I ended up with the first version of the mascot. (The other options will soon be available as royalty-free downloads on my Pixabay page.)

Vectorization: From Sketch to Digital

With our mascot ready, the next step was vectorization. This process was simple: I placed the sketch into Illustrator and used the Pen Tool for most of the drawing. As always, I’m sharing the process in animation format.

Colors and Typography

The next step was selecting a color palette. I opted for solid colors to maintain a classic aesthetic.

Alongside the color palette, I had to choose the typography. I needed a font that not only maintained the vintage aesthetic but was also free for commercial use. It didn't take long to find the perfect option: Chailce Noggin Regular, which meets all the requirements and looks fantastic.

Junto con la paleta de colores vino la elección de la tipografía. Necesitaba una variante que evocara la estética vintage del juego y, sobre todo, que estuviera libre para uso comercial. No tardé mucho en encontrar la opción ideal: Chailce Noggin Regular, que destaca por su aire retro y se ve genial.

I created several versions of the mascot, both in color and in black and white, with and without text. I’m sharing the transparent PNGs of all the options.

Now that we have a defined identity, colors, and typography, it’s time for the random objects. To do this, I used my collection of free mockups and selected the strangest ones while ensuring they complemented our mascot. Who wouldn’t want a T-shirt with this cute bee or see it on the cover of their notebook? Of course, I’m also sharing the objects I created.

Ahora, con una identidad, colores y tipografía definidos, llegó el turno de los objetos aleatorios. Para ello, recurrí a mi colección de mockups libres y seleccioné los más raros pero que, al mismo tiempo, combinaran con nuestra mascota. ¿Quién no querría tener una camiseta con esta abeja tan linda o verla en la portada de un cuaderno de notas?
