[EN/PT-BR] Animals in zoos: A difficult idea to work with.

The zoo is one of the coolest and most fun places we have to go for a walk and take our friends and family. It's a fun place where we can appreciate and learn about many animals that aren't normally part of our daily routine. Many of them may not even exist naturally in our country, where we live. This makes everything much more enjoyable, seeing how they behave, how they feed, and how they play with each other. Going to the zoo is something my kids love to do, for example; they really get super excited when we go.

But, for our amusement, is it right to keep so many animals confined? Well, it's a complicated idea to work out. After all, we know their natural place is in the wild, free, living their lives as wildly as possible. They were bred for this. With human interference, we end up leaving some of these animals in zoos for the amusement of children and adults. My opinion is that perhaps zoos are better for animals that are injured, that may not be able to return to the wild and survive their predators, or that can't even find food for themselves.

As a form of protection, I think it's valid to keep animals in this situation in zoos. Another example is animals at risk of extinction. Since we can't protect them in their natural habitat, putting them in a zoo is the best option. This allows them to breed, gradually increasing their numbers, and thus gain time to think of a way to protect them in their original environment (if possible, of course). So, in these two aspects, and I believe in some others, it is indeed beneficial to have animals in certain vulnerable situations protected by concrete walls and fences.

Now, thinking about healthy animals that could live peacefully in their natural environment but are in a zoo, things get more complex, leaning more towards ethics. We humans wouldn't want to live in a box or a cage, even though there are prisons. You only go there if you do something wrong, so you have a choice not to do anything wrong that will land you in prison. Now, animals don't have that choice. They can simply be caught in the wild or born there. So they live in captivity, believing that this is natural, that their lives are limited to that cell and the environment where they are kept.

Well, that's how the world works. Many places have zoos, and I don't think that's going to change anytime soon. So, unfortunately, some animals will be placed there so we can see them. Therefore, the only thing I hope is that they are well cared for, that they are respected and committed to their hygiene, nutrition, leisure time, and that they receive plenty of love and affection from the people closest to them. I always say that our pets and animals in general are better than many people, so they deserve respect and good care.

These issues involving animals are always complex. Much of this generates much debate, such as the notorious practice of using animals as guinea pigs for experiments on new vaccines and medicines. Perhaps it's a necessary evil in this case, but keeping them in zoos isn't going to revolutionize anything; it's just for our entertainment, so we can see some animals up close. So, what's right or wrong? Complicated, isn't it? So, as long as animals are well cared for, fed, and shown some affection, this already somewhat lessens the feeling of guilt about what we do to them.

O zoológico é um dos lugares mais legais e divertidos que temos para fazer um passeio e levar nossos amigos e família. Um lugar de diversão, onde podemos apreciar e aprender sobre muitos animais que normalmente não estão na nossa rotina, muitos deles talvez nem existam naturalmente em nosso país, onde vivemos, então isso torna tudo muito mais legal de se fazer, ver como eles se compartam, como se alimentam e brincam entre si. Ir ao zoológico é um programa que meus filhos amam fazer, por exemplo, realmente eles ficam super felizes quando vamos ao zoológico.

Mas, para nossa diversão, será que é legal deixar tantos animais presos? Bem, é uma ideia complicada de trabalhar, afinal sabemos que o lugar natural deles é na natureza, soltos, livres, vivendo suas vidas da forma mais selvagem possível, foram criados para isso e com a interferência do homem, acabamos por deixar alguns destes animais em zoológicos para a diversão de crianças e adultos. A minha opinião é que talvez o zoo seja melhor para animais que estão machucados, que talvez não tenham como voltar para a natureza e sobreviver aos seus predadores ou que nem consigam buscar alimentos para si.

Como forma de proteção, acho válido deixar animais nesta situação em zoológicos. Outro exemplo são animais com risco de extinção, já que em seu habitat natural não conseguimos protegê-los, colocar eles em um zoo seja o melhor, para que assim eles possam procriar, gradualmente aumentar os números e assim ganhamos tempo para pensar em uma forma de proteger eles em seu ambiente original (claro que se possível isso), então nestes dois pontos e acredito que em alguns outros, seja, sim, bom ter animais em certas situações de vulnerabilidade protegidos por paredes e grades de concreto.

Agora, pensando em animais sadios e que poderiam viver tranquilamente em seu ambiente natural e que estão em um zoológico, a coisa fica mais complexa, puxando mais para o lado da ética. Nós seres humanos não gostaríamos de viver em uma caixa ou uma jaula, apesar de haver prisões. Você só vai para lá se fizer algo errado, então você tem uma escolha de não fazer nada de errado que vá te levar para uma prisão. Agora os animais, não têm essa escolha, eles simplesmente podem ser pegos na natureza ou nascer ali, então somente vivem presos, achando que ali é o natural, que a sua vida se resume naquela cela e ambiente onde fica.

Bem, o mundo funciona assim, vários lugares têm zoológico e acho que isso não irá mudar tão cedo, então infelizmente alguns animais serão colocados lá para podermos vê-los. Dessa forma, a única coisa que espero é que eles sejam bem cuidados, que tenham um respeito e comprometimento com sua higiene, alimentação, momentos de lazer e possam ter muito amor e carinho ali das pessoas mais próximas. Sempre digo que os nossos pets e os animais em geral são melhores do que muita gente, então merecem respeito e serem bem cuidados.

Essas questões que envolvem animais são sempre complexas, muita coisa envolvida neste assunto gera muita discussão, como a famosa ação de usar alguns animais como cobaias para experimentos de novas vacinas e remédios, talvez seja um mal necessário nesse caso, mas deixar eles em zoológicos não é nada que vá revolucionar algo, é somente para a nossa diversão, para podermos ver mais de perto alguns animais, então, o que seria certo ou errado? Complicado, não é mesmo? Então, que os animais sejam bem cuidados, alimentados e que tenham carinho de alguma forma, isso já diminui um pouco o sentimento de culpa pelo que fazemos com eles.
