Onboarding on Hive Through Chess
15 comments
Hello Everyone,
Three months ago, I wrote a post about how the Chess Community on Hive is growing Stronger. In this post, I reflected the community early beginnings from steem days till now on Hive. I explained the progress our community has made and also the people responsible for this progress. In one of my statements, I said,
I haven't been consistent with Hive chess or even Hive and I haven't demonstrated myself to be a leader when I had the chance. However, I wish and hope that the Hive chess community grows into a massive global community where chess players from all over the world join Hive, create content, and compete at a high level. Imagine a future where we have hundreds of active players, intense tournaments, and real recognition for the effort put into playing and creating chess content.
However, I know fully well that this dream can't happen overnight and suddenly. It requires effort and planning to happen and I have decided to take a step in that direction, Hence, the reason for this post.
Onboarding To Hive Through Chess
I have been playing chess for 15 years and I have access to the chess world as a professional chess player I've also been on the Blockchain for a long time to understand how it works.
Indeed, I have my shortcomings on Hive as well and my inconsistency in the chess community is something I'm not proud of. However, two things I'm sure of are: I love the game of chess and I also love Hive. I have led several initiatives and activities in the past. I once spearheaded the Nigerian community to an Engagement initiative which till date should have one of the highest comments on a single post on Hive; About 2200+ comments!
Also, I did a series titled "5 Hive Questions with Samostically" - A podcast where top Hiveans and I have discussions about their love for the blockchain and How newbies can navigate their way.
It's also important to note I've tried onboarding and failed at it as I wasn't a good guardian and got distracted. I can only boast of maybe 2 users still active for over 3 years.
Why is This Onboarding Initiative Any Different?
I asked myself this and the answer is easy, I'm a chess player and also someone who loves Hive. I understand almost everything there is to getting this done.

- Why Should We Join Hive?
- How To Generate Rewards
What Are Your Player's Retention Plans?
I think this is the biggest and most important question when onboarding people to Hive. Why is because most people join Hive and it gets incredibly difficult to convince them to stay as rewards don't come that easy and we can’t hope people come to hive just because of the rewards, we want people to stay and also we want investors.
Apparently Investing in Binance right now is more worth it than staking and voting. Although Our wallet here is easier and safer than investing in an exchange. Who knows when Binance might get hacked?
We need people to fall in love with Hive, what it stands for,the ability to express yourself at a different level, and the true power of decentralization. For chess players, we already love the game and that love can easily extend to Hive if connected. That being said, Chess players would stay if more tournaments were hosted on Hive. Thankfully, we have a league that has been running for more than 20 seasons sustained by the efforts of @stayoutoftherz. This league has kept players who don't even create content on Hive for more than 5 years. I can start something similar or a single tournament once or twice a month to increase that Hivechess bond.
Why Should We Join Hive? (The players Might Ask)
In the chess world, a lot of times, People come up with different related chess projects and offer new coins to players to be part of them. Most times, this project fails and most times tournament prizes are not paid or after the tournament most just sell off and keep living their lives. When chess players hear Crypto related tournaments, they are usually quite skeptical or look at just the money involved. Hence the question, "Why should we Join Hive"
Hive is 100% different from these Crypto projects and transparency is key. These players are going to be paid in Hive and even before these events, both sponsors and players can monitor the prize account also there would be a proper orientation and social media activities aimed at these chess players to see that it goes beyond one or two tournaments.
How To Generate Rewards?
An account @sam.chess has been created to this effect. 80% of the rewards on this post and subsequent chess-related posts would be directed toward making this my dream possible. As of writing this post, I don't have that part fully covered but I have spoken to certain lovers of the game and I believe this is possible and as time goes on it becomes a lot more clear.
I also plan to write chess contents about the tournaments and analysis of games from the tournament here on Hive. Video clips of the event and analysis would be posted on 3Speak. Players would earn extra rewards for brilliancy on their games as they would have accounts and can be beneficiaries of such posts.
Tournament Plans & Partners
My first plan is to set up one of the biggest online tournaments in Africa inviting 10 Of the strongest players from different parts of Africa to compete and be rewarded in Hive. Subsequent posts to buttress that plan would be made. As of now, I have The African chess Media, one of the leading forces in African chess to organize, invite, and plan the tournament. Also cover the event as regards players' recordings, statements, and profiles.
Chess being a spectator sport means Chess lovers can tune in to watch the games live as they go on. Also aside the standard chess rules being followed, there would be video monitoring and fair play measures like anti-cheating softwares using Lichess.org
Conclusion
While this started as an idea in my head, I've decided to pour it out and see how it goes and probably make my dream a reality. I am open to support, ideas, and help.
I am @samostically, I love to talk and write about chess because I benefited a lot from playing chess and I love writing about chess.
