Choosing Self-Care First

Whenever my friends or relatives come to me for advice about life, I always make sure to remind them about one thing first, take care of your mental health. People usually focus on work, money, and physical health, but mental health is just as important. You can be eating healthy and exercising regularly, but if your mind is constantly stressed and overwhelmed, you’re still not truly okay.

Stress is one of those things that slowly creeps in and puts unnecessary pressure on our mental state. A little stress is normal, but constantly worrying about everything, work, deadlines, expectations, can slowly drain our energy. As much as possible, I try not to entertain too much stress, because I know it will eventually have a negative impact on my overall health.

For me, weekends are my reset button. Since today is Sunday, most of my day is dedicated to relaxation and taking care of myself, my own “me time.” That could mean resting, watching something light, or simply doing nothing for a while. Of course, I still do some house chores like laundry and cooking some nice food, but I try to keep the pace relaxed and not rushed.

At the end of the day, it’s all about feeling good about taking care of yourself. Self-care is not selfish, it’s necessary. When we are kinder to ourselves, we become more patient, more present, and more capable of facing whatever life throws at us.

As Anne Lamott once said, “Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”

Take care everyone!
