Another day, another coin. I would like to show you a specimen I purchased at my favourite place to buy coins. It is a small shop in Olsztyn, where an elderly gentleman sits and sells his collection so that, as he says, ‘he can have some fun in his old age’. You can buy coins there at bargain prices, and that was the case this time. The old man knows very well that I collect German coins and don't often buy anything else, but he really wanted to sell me this one, and I finally agreed. The upside is that I bought it for about 60% of the market price. That's how I became the happy owner of my first coin from the Austrian Netherlands.

Kolejny dzień, to kolejna moneta. Chciałbym przedstawić wam okaz, który nabyłem w moim ulubionym miejscu do kupowania monet. Jest to mały sklepik w Olsztynie, gdzie siedzi starszy pan i wyprzedaje kolekcję, aby jak on to mawia "Na starość się pobawić". Można kupić tam krążki po okazyjnych cenach i tak było tym razem. Staruszek dobrze wie, że zbieram monety niemieckie i nie często kupuję coś innego, ale tą bardzo chciał mi wcisnąć i w końcu się zgodziłem. Plusem jest to, że kupiłem ją za jakieś 60% ceny rynkowej. W ten sposób stałem się szczęśliwym posiadaczem mojej pierwszej monety z Niderlandów Austriackich.

This is quite an interesting coin, dating back to the times when the Habsburg monarchy extended as far as the Netherlands. The first thing that catches the eye is the mint mark. It is unusual, as most mints used letters such as ‘A’ or ‘W.M.’, but here we have nice pictograms. There are two versions to choose from: a lion, which denoted the mint in Bruges in West Flanders, or a hand, which denoted the mint in Antwerp. My copy has a lion pictogram, which means it is slightly rarer. The reverse of this coin features the richly decorated Habsburg coat of arms, topped with a large imperial crown. In the centre is a shield divided into fields bearing the symbols of the various lands under the rule of the monarchy – Austria, Burgundy, Brabant and Flanders. The rim bears the Latin legend ‘ARCH AUS DUX BURG BRAB C FL’, which is the abbreviated title of Maria Theresa: Archidux Austriae, Dux Burgundiae, Brabantiae, Comes Flandriae – ‘Archduchess of Austria, Duchess of Burgundy and Brabant, Countess of Flanders’. The obverse depicts a majestic lion leaning on a shield with Maria Theresa's initials – MAR TH D G R JMP G HUN BOH R – which stands for Maria Theresia Dei Gratia Romanorum Imperatrix, Hungariae Bohemiae Regina – ‘Maria Theresa, by the Grace of God, Empress of the Romans, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia’. The whole coin is characterised by the craftsmanship of the engraving and the elegance typical of 18th-century coinage. I really like it. I can say that it is ‘orderly’ and nothing is missing. The designer of this coin was the Frenchman Jacques Roëttiers.

Jest to dosyć ciekawa monetka, która pochodzi z czasów, w których monarchia Habsburgów sięgała aż do terenów Niderlandów. Pierwsze co się rzuca w oczy to znak menniczy. Jest on niezwykły, gdyż większość mennic korzystała z liter np. "A" lub "W.M.", a tu mamy ładne piktogramy. Do wyboru mamy dwie wersje: Lew, który oznaczał mennicę w Brugii w zachodniej Flandrii lub rękę, która oznacza mennicę w Antwerpii. Mój egzemplarz posiada piktogram lwa, co oznacza, że jest nieco rzadszy. Na rewersie tej monety widnieje bogato zdobiony herb Habsburgów, zwieńczony wielką koroną cesarską. W samym centrum znajduje się tarcza podzielona na pola, w których umieszczono symbole różnych krain pod panowaniem monarchii – Austrii, Burgundii, Brabancji oraz Flandrii. W otoku widnieje łacińska legenda „ARCH AUS DUX BURG BRAB C FL”, czyli skrócony tytuł Marii Teresy: Archidux Austriae, Dux Burgundiae, Brabantiae, Comes Flandriae – „Arcyksiężna Austrii, Księżna Burgundii i Brabancji, Hrabina Flandrii”. Awers przedstawia majestatycznego lwa wspierającego się o tarczę z inicjałami Marii Teresy – MAR TH D G R JMP G HUN BOH R – co oznacza Maria Theresia Dei Gratia Romanorum Imperatrix, Hungariae Bohemiae Regina – „Maria Teresa z Bożej Łaski Cesarzowa Rzymska, Królowa Węgier i Czech”. Całość cechuje się kunsztem grawerunku i elegancją typową dla mennictwa XVIII wieku. Mi się szczerze bardzo podoba. Mogę powiedzieć, że jest "uporządkowana" i niczego jej nie brakuje. Projektantem tej monety był Francuz Jacques Roëttiers.
