The Book We Only See Once A Year... LOH #266

There's this one item I've known since I was little. Now, I can say that particular item is a part of our family. Permit me to say it's one of our ancestors 😁. Guess what that item was...a Bible. It is one that has been down from generation to generation. In short, that Bible is older than grandad. Before he (my grandad) passed away, he told us it was given to him by his own dad too. Now, it's in the custody of my parents. I don't know, and I doubt my parents also know how many hands has held that ancestor of a Bible. Mere seeing it, you will know it's an ancestor, it's aged and it's papers aren't the regular ones we see today.

It still has a back cover that looks like a cloth or leather, worn out though. Even the edges of the Bible passage now has fingerprints like designs on them, to show how many times it has been opened, touched and all. I don't know if it was to celebrate that Bible or to make it feel so special, that I don't know, but since I was small, I've been only seeing that Bible once in a year, and that's on Christmas day when we wan to do some prayers. No matter how busy we were, no matter the tension, even if it was brought out a time you were having a beef or hot argument with someone, or one of us is dragging me at with the other, everything will just ease and slow down. That Bible carries a presence I can't comprehend with words.
I love sitting close to my dad so I could have a good look at that Bible. Another things I noticed is the fact that, there's never been light anytime that Bible is being brought out, another reason why I believe that Bible carries a presence is that, there's always light, I mean electricity anytime it's been brought out. Even if there hasn't been light for the past a week, that day or the moment it's been brought out, light will definitely come before we're done an it's been returned.

About two years ago, our transformer was faulty, so it was so sure there wouldn't be light, that day, we made use of lanterns and torches, and just a few minutes to the time we will be done, our neighbor switched on his generator, and we had light too. It was the second day we got to know he bought a generator that day and had connected our lights to his too. He didn't tell anyone, he just said he felt it won't be good since there's no light everywhere, and it won't be good to celebrate Christmas in darkness.
Let's see how this year's Christmas will go as well, I know it will not be any different. My mum still holds that belief that the light stands as a sign that every of the prayers we pray each Christmas night has received answers. And I can't deny that too. Now, back then when my dad opens to read, I just look, what I do mostly is admire that Bible, because I will only get to see it again after a year. So, I'd admire it, try to memorize the drawings inside of it and look at the already fainting various marks and lines on it. Mere looking at the Bible, you will agree with me that it has lived hundreds of years. I really do not know how my family or lineage became it's custodian.

Up until now, anytime Christmas approaches, the Bible is always the first thing on my mind, not the food, not even the reunions and all. They all have their places too, I'm happy I'll get to see my siblings, childhood friends and all, but then it has always been that Bible first. I actually do not have it with me, maybe if I do, I would have been looking at it everyday, but I know it's somewhere in my dad's room, and it's obvious it will be handed over to my elder brother later on.
Till now, none of us knew where it was kept except my dad, I remember I and my brother have searched for it countless times, but we couldn't find it. And if you knew us both, you would know there's absolutely nothing we can't find for you, but we've never been able to find out. The funniest part is, each time my dad goes in to bring it, he spends less than a minute to bring it out, so, it's obvious it's not that hidden or kept faraway now, where exactly could it have been kept. Well, it's feels so good to know I'll be seeing it again very soon, Christmas is few weeks away and I'll definitely be traveling home.

I can tell you for free that the Bible, that Bible isn't a decoration or just any item, but a reminder of the people who raised me and how life has helped shaped me right from childhood. What it carries goes beyond what words can comprehend. It's not just any kind of Bible, aside from it's big size, it carries a presence. Believe me when I tell you that. And it happens to be one of those things that never stops giving me the reason to be and feel at home during Christmas.
