When your skin turns a different color after spending time in the sun, you get a suntan. It usually turns darker, sometimes with a golden or brownish look, depending on your skin type.
At first, getting a tan might seem like a good thing your skin looks glowing, people compliment you, and you feel fresh like you’ve just come back from a holiday. However, there is a lot more going on beneath that glow than we frequently realize. When you sit or walk under the sun for long, your skin is hit by something called UV rays.
These are invisible rays from the sun that go deep into your skin. Your body tries to protect itself by making more melanin—the pigment that gives your skin its color. The more melanin, the darker your skin gets, which is what we call a suntan. It’s basically your body’s way of saying, “Hey, this sun is strong—I better shield myself!”

Now, a little bit of sun is good for you. It provides vitamin D to your body, which maintains bone strength and improves mood. However, too much sun, especially in the absence of shade, can be harmful. Later on, that lovely tan might turn into a blistering, hot, itchy sunburn. Over time, too much tanning can make your skin wrinkle faster, get dry, or even increase the chance of skin diseases.
That’s why it’s important to enjoy the sun wisely. If you’re out for long, use sunscreen, wear a hat, or take breaks in the shade. Your skin is like a living shield—it protects you every day. So, while a suntan might look nice for a while, keeping your skin healthy is what will make you truly glow in the long run.
