Chile - Two barges on the same day to go from Chaitén to Hornopirén: a long journey but with beautiful scenery. / Dos barcazas el mismo día para ir desde Chaitén hasta Hornopirén: larga travesía pero con hermosos paisajes. 😃❤️

Our day had gotten off to an incredible start, but we still had a long way to go. The end of our improvised trip through Chile and the Carretera Austral was approaching, so we had better get moving and stick to our itinerary. Our plan for that day was to travel the more than 200 kilometers that separated Queulat National Park from Chaitén, from where we would continue our journey to Hornopirén. We knew it was going to be a long day with a lot of moving, so we mentally prepared ourselves for it 😃.
Nuestro día había empezado de una manera increíble, pero todavía teniamos un largo camino por delante. El final del viaje improvisado por Chile y la Carretera Austral se estaba acercando, por lo que era mejor apurarse para poder cumplir el itinerario. Lo que teníamos planeado ese día era recorrer los más de 200 kilómetros que separaban el Parque Nacional Queulat de Chaitén, desde donde continuaría nuestra travesía hasta Hornopirén. Sabíamos que ese día iba a ser largo y todo en movimiento, así que nos preparamos mentalmente para ello 😃.
Seeing the beautiful Hanging Glacier filled us with positive energy and recharged us for the long journey ahead. Despite leaving the park before 3 PM, getting to Chaitén took us almost all day. We ended up arriving there after 9 PM, including a few stops in between to eat, take short naps, and stretch our legs. The good news was that upon arrival, we got a room in a shared house for $25 a night, but since there were no other guests, we had the whole house to ourselves, and for a great price.
Ver el hermoso Ventisquero Colgante nos llenó de energía positiva y eso fue lo que nos recargó para el largo camino que nos esperaba más tarde. A pesar de haber salido del parque antes de las 3 PM, llegar hasta Chaitén nos tomó casi todo el día. Terminamos llegando a esta localidad después de las 9 PM, contando unas cuantas paradas intermedias que hicimos para comer, dormir pequeñas siestas y estirar las piernas. Lo bueno fue que al llegar, conseguimos una habitación en una casa compartida por $25 la noche, pero como justo no habían otros huéspedes, tuvimos toda la casa para nosotros solos y por un precio genial.
The next day, we started the journey very early to make it to the barges we were supposed to take on time. This area of southern Chile is made up of many fjords, so the terrain is uneven and it's necessary to navigate to connect the towns. If we look at the map, right in this area there are two sections with water that must be navigated due to a kind of peninsula. This is the fastest way to cross this area, unless you want to go all the way around.
Al día siguiente, empezamos la travesía muy temprano para poder llegar a tiempo a las barcazas que debíamos tomar. Esta zona del sur del Chile está compuesta por un montón de fiordos, por lo que el terreno es irregular y es necesario navegar para poder unir las localidades. Si revisamos el mapa, justo en esta parte hay dos partes con agua que deben ser navegadas a causa de una especie de península. Esta es la forma más rápida de atravesar este lugar, a menos que quieras dar toda la vuelta.
Chaitén to Hornopirén Route / Ruta desde Chaitén a HornopirénThe first part of the trip consisted of driving 55 km from the town of Chaitén to Caleta Gonzalo, where the first barge would be waiting for us. This boat leg was the shortest, only 40 minutes on the water, but we had to wait quite a while to get on. Also, we had a problem with the website the night before and didn't have advance tickets, so they left us until the last minute to see if they could sell us tickets right away. Luckily this was possible for both sections, since they are sold together.
La primera parte del viaje consistió en manejar 55 km desde el pueblo de Chaitén hasta Caleta Gonzalo, en donde nos esperaría la primera barcaza. Este tramo en barco es el más corto, solo fueron 40 minutos en el agua, pero tuvimos que esperar bastante para poder subirnos. Además, la noche anterior habíamos tenido un problema con la página de internet y no teníamos pasajes anticipados, por lo que nos dejaron hasta lo último para ver si podían vendernos el ticket en ese mismo momento. Por suerte esto fue posible para ambos tramos, ya que se venden juntos.
The second part of the trip was driving from Pillan, where the first barge dropped us off, to Porcelana Cove, where the second barge would depart. This section is a route through private land, and it's only a 15-minute drive. I found it funny that for such a short distance, about 9 km, we have to take two boats to get from one side to the other, but nature intended it that way.
La segunda parte del viaje fue manejar desde Pillan, donde nos dejó la primera barcaza, hasta Caleta Porcelana, desde donde saldría la segunda barcaza. Este tramo es una ruta en el medio de un terreno privado, y solo son 15 minutos manejando. Me causaba gracia que por tan corta distancia, unos 9 km, haya que tomar dos barcos para llegar de un lado a otro, pero la naturaleza así lo quiso.
The third and final leg of this voyage was the longest, lasting a total of three and a half hours. While the first barge was simple because it was a short trip, this one was more geared toward sightseeing. There was a dining room with more chairs, tables, and televisions, and we were even allowed out on deck to admire the scenery. You could also stay seated in your car, but it was more fun to explore the boat.
La tercera y última parte de esta travesía fue la navegación más larga, durando en total tres horas y media. Mientras que la primera barcaza era sencilla porque era un viaje corto, esta estaba más preparada para el turismo. Había un salón comedor con más sillas, mesas y televisores, y además nos dejaron salir a cubierta a mirar el paisaje. También podías optar por quedarte sentado en tu auto, pero era más divertido recorrer el barco.
For this entire trip, we had to pay $50 for the car plus the driver, and an additional $11.50 for an extra passenger, which was me. Once again, this trip saved us time and gas, and it felt like another excursion through the Chilean fjords. The scenery was beautiful, as was the day we chose, so we took advantage of the fresh air, but I won't deny that I also took a short, restorative nap until we arrived.
Por todo este viaje, tuvimos que pagar $50 por el auto más el conductor, y unos $11.5 adicionales por un pasajero extra, o sea yo. Una vez más, este viaje nos permitió ahorrar tiempo y gasolina, y de paso fue como una excursión más por los fiordos chilenos. El paisaje era hermoso y el día que nos tocó también, así que aprovechamos el aire libre pero no niego que también dormí una pequeña y reparadora siesta hasta que llegamos.
Finally, after leaving Chaitén at 10 AM, it was 7 PM and we had just arrived in Hornopirén. We found ourselves in a picturesque town adorned by a beautiful volcano. We stayed a total of two nights in a hostel that charged us $15 for a room in a beautiful house very close to the city center. Those two days, I decided to be happy in real life and left my phone at home every time we went out, so I don't have many more photos or content of this city, but believe me, it was beautiful 😂.
Finalmente, después de haber salido a las 10 AM de Chaitén, eran las 7 PM y recién habíamos llegado a Hornopirén. Nos encontramos con un pueblo pintoresco y con un hermoso volcán que lo adornaba. Nos quedamos en total dos noches en un alojamiento que nos cobró $15 una habitación en una casa hermosa y muy cerca del centro. Esos dos días decidí ser feliz en la vida real y dejé el celular en la casa todas las veces que salimos, así que no tengo muchas más fotos ni contenido de esta ciudad, pero creánme que era linda 😂.
Another thing we did in Hornopirén was take the opportunity to take the little car to the mechanic. We'd already traveled over 1,000 km since leaving Ushuaia, so it was best to get some maintenance done. We also went out to eat ice cream and watch the sunset, which gave us some beautiful colors. Now I keep those memories to myself since I don't have any photos, but I'm sure those landscapes will never be erased from my memory ❤️.
Otra cosa que hicimos en Hornopirén fue aprovechar para llevar al pequeño autito al mecánico. Ya llevabamos recorridos más de 1000 km desde que habíamos salido de Ushuaia, así que lo mejor era hacerle un poco de mantenimiento. También salimos a comer helado y ver el atardecer, que nos regaló unos colores hermosos. Ahora esos recuerdos los guardo solo para mí ya que no tengo fotos, pero estoy segura que esos paisajes nunca se me van a borrar de la memoria ❤️.
