From The Time Our Well Ran Dry To The Time We Dug a New One Part 2

The big rumbling sound made me feel overwhelmed. The machine made a deep rumbling noise as it dug into the earth. Finally, we had the construction of a drilled well.

During that moment, I felt as if someone was digging through my body. It wasn’t just about the loud sound. I felt that digging into the land is such a powerful and sensational act. I heard that Native Americans say we should never dig into Mother Earth. I could definitely understand the meaning of that expression.

However, how can we get natural water in our environment today? It’s almost impossible to access drinkable water from rivers, creeks, or springs anymore. I also heard that the nearest spring water source is facing a bit of a difficult situation. While dealing with this well water issue, I’ve been depending on the nearby spring water more than before. Unfortunately, we heard a bad rumour about the quality of the spring in this area, so I would like to check the spring water quality when my well water is ready to be tested at the same time.

Well, this is my old well. We can’t use it anymore. The dry weather completely dried it up. It just sits quietly on our property now. It has retired.

The well-digger truck arrived with a big machine on it. The sound of the truck was very deep and a bit scary. I’m glad that I finished my morning work just before they came.

When they started setting up the digger, the tower was taller than our house. It looked so heavy and intimidating. The front tires of the truck were even floating. Then, the workers realized they needed to fix some parts, so they had to stop their work in the middle of the digging process. They left the big truck overnight and came back the next day.

The drilling process wasn’t easy. Their original estimate was much shallower. They compared it to our neighbors’ well depths, but even after they hit the bedrock, they couldn’t find enough water pressure.

They kept digging and digging... I can still hear the sound of drilling echoing in my ears. They actually dug nearly 280 feet (about 85.34 meters). Phew... I heard that when they redid another neighbour’s well nearby, they also had to dig deeper because they didn’t have enough water after the first construction. Our land is so dry...

Okay, this is our new well. It looks completely different from the old one. We won’t have a mouse issue anymore! Yet, we still don’t have water in our house system.

From now on, we need to ask an electrician to hook up the tank, clean the water, test the water, and do a few more things before we can use it. Workers usually don’t work on weekends, so I need to bring water from the spring almost every day until our water system is ready. Hopefully, the rest of the process will go smoothly. I’ll write again when we’re finally ready to use water!

大きな地響きのような音に圧倒されました。地面を掘るたびに機械が深く唸るような音を立てていました。ついに私たちは新しい井戸を掘る工事の日を迎えました。

その瞬間、まるで自分の体を掘られているような感覚でした。大きな音だけでなく、「土地を掘る」という行為そのものがとても感覚的で強い意味を持つものに感じられました。

ネイティブアメリカンの人たちは「母なる大地を掘ってはいけない」と言うそうですが、その言葉の意味が、今ははっきりと分かる気がします。けれども、今の時代、どうやって自然の水を得ればいいのでしょうか。もう川や小川、湧き水から直接飲めるような水を手に入れることは、ほとんど不可能です。私の近くの湧き水も、少し厳しい状況になっていると聞きました。井戸水の問題が起きてからは、その湧き水に頼ることが増えています。ですが最近、その湧き水の水質に関して良くない噂を耳にしたので、井戸水の水質検査を行うときに、湧き水も一緒に検査してもらおうと思っています。

さて、これは古い井戸です。もう使うことはありません。乾燥した天候のせいで、すっかり枯れてしまいました。今はただ静かに私たちの敷地の中で佇んでいます。まるで引退したかのような姿です。

井戸掘りのトラックが大きな機械を積んでやってきました。その音はとても低く、少し怖いほどでした。彼らが来る直前に朝の仕事時間を終えておいて本当によかったです。

地面を掘る機械を立て始めたとき、そのタワーは私たちの家よりも高く、とても重そうで、少し恐ろしいほどでした。トラックの前輪は宙に浮いていました。そして作業員の人たちは部品の一部を修理する必要があることに気づき、掘削の途中で作業を中断しました。大きなトラックをそのまま残して、一晩経ってから翌日に戻ってきました。

掘るは簡単ではありませんでした。最初の見積もりでは、はるかに浅い深さで水が出ると思っていたようです。近所の井戸の深さを参考にしていましたが、岩盤に達しても十分な水圧が見つからなかったのです。

作業員は掘り続けました。あのドリルの音が今でも耳に残っています。最終的に、実に280フィート（約85メートル）まで掘ったそうです。ふう…。近くの別の家でも、最初の掘り方では水が足りず、後から掘り直してさらに深く掘ることになったと聞きました。この土地は本当に乾いています。

さて、これが新しい井戸です。昔のものとはまったく違うスタイルです。もうネズミの問題は起きないと思います！

ただ、まだ家の水道システムにはつながっていません。これから電気技師にタンクを接続してもらい、水をきれいにして、水質検査などをしてからでないと使えません。業者さんたちは週末は働かないことが多いので、水が使えるようになるまで、ほとんど毎日湧き水を汲みに行かなくてはなりません。どうか残りの工程が順調に進みますように。水が使えるようになったら、また書きたいと思います。
