A day of Christmas Vibes and Then Ramen

I went to the hospital to have a medical exam the other day, early in the morning. The exam went very smoothly, and because it was so early, I had time before my afternoon appointment at the office in town. I was planning to buy some items on my shopping list, so I visited the shopping area near the hospital. It was still quite early, but there were already many people shopping for Christmas.

I like to explore home hardware stores, even though some people call them “amusement parks for men.” I enjoy browsing through tools, kitchen items, car-related products, home supplies, and many other items at hardware stores.

There was a special Christmas section near the exit. Most of the Christmas ornaments were already gone compared to when I visited last month. I found a special one for my mother in Japan and sent it safely without breaking it.

While my husband was checking his items, I was looking at Christmas trees. I heard that there is a Christmas lights decoration competition in town. I don’t decorate my house with lights, but I’ve noticed that many houses have Christmas illumination displays.

In my hometown, there is a rumour that if a couple visits a Christmas illumination park together, they will eventually break up. Some people take this story very seriously. I think the park itself is very beautiful, but once you hear such a rumour, it tends to stick in your mind for a while. However, toward the end of the year, people naturally experience many encounters and separations.

In Canada, I’ve noticed many interesting and pretty figures everywhere. This one was especially unique, and I had never seen this type of decoration before. As you know, it was a nutcracker doll dressed in an ice hockey costume. It was holding a hockey stick, wearing a helmet, a uniform, and ice skates. I also saw many ornaments related to ice hockey.

These caps are not directly related to Christmas, but I see this type of Canadian cap everywhere in town. Many middle-aged men wear these caps and hats. Some people wear T-shirts, hoodies, or jackets with Canadian flag logos, and some women carry bags with the Canadian flag design. This is an interesting culture for me. In Japan, I rarely see people wearing items with the Japanese flag. People usually display flags only during sports events or national memorial days.

Well, since I mentioned ramen in the title, I’ll finally write about ramen here. My nearest supermarket has been under renovation for many months. In the special discount carts, there are often interesting items that really attract customers. I found many international foods there, and the other day I came across Japanese dried ramen. There are Japanese ramen products available here, but they are often produced in other countries. However, this one was made in Japan.

This Kumamoto tonkotsu-style ramen was vegan, even though tonkotsu means pork bones. It was very tasty and not as oily as typical pork-bone soup. It had a 50 percent off sticker, but the best-before date was still far away. The taste was good and it felt fresh.

I love cooking instant ramen nicely by adding lots of vegetables, just as my mother used to make homemade ramen on weekends when I was young. Whenever I realized she was making ramen for lunch, I felt so excited to eat it.

This time, I cooked shimeji mushrooms, onions, and bacon first, and prepared boiled eggs and asparagus as toppings. Then I boiled the noodles. I don’t mix the seasoning directly into the pot; instead, I prepare the soup separately in a bowl. This makes the soup taste more professional. I also added seaweed and pickled umeboshi as toppings. I ate it very quickly on a cold day. I think I will buy it again if I find it in the discount cart.

ある一日、クリスマスの雰囲気を感じてからのラーメン

先日、早朝に検査を受けるため病院へ行きました。検査はとてもスムーズに終わり、午後に街のオフィスで用事があったのですが、それまでにかなり時間がありました。ちょうど買い物リストのものを購入する予定だったので、病院の近くのショッピングエリアへ立ち寄りました。まだ朝早い時間でしたが、すでにクリスマスの買い物をしている人が意外とたくさんいました。

私は、いわゆる男の人の遊園地と呼ばれることもあるホームセンターを見て回るのが好きです。工具やキッチン用品、車用品、家まわりのものなど、いろいろな商品を見るのが楽しいのです。

入り口の近くにはクリスマス特設コーナーがありました。先月見たときと比べると、オーナメントはほとんど売り切れていました。以前、この中から日本の母のためにオーナメントを一つ選び、割れないように気をつけて無事に届きました。

主人が買い物をしている間、私はクリスマスツリーを見ていました。町ではクリスマスライトのデコレーションコンテストがあるそうです。我が家は家をライトで飾ることはしませんが、まわりを見ると、たくさんの家がイルミネーションをしていることに気づきました。

私の地元には、クリスマスにイルミネーション公園へカップルで訪れるとと別れるという噂があります。その話をかなり真剣に信じている人もいます。公園自体はとても美しい場所なのですが、そんな噂を一度聞いてしまうと、しばらく頭に残ってしまうものです。ただ、単純に年末という時期は、自然と出会いや別れが増える時期でもあると思うのです。

カナダでは、街のあちこちに面白くて可愛らしい置物があることに気づきました。今回見たものもとても素敵で、今まで見たことのないタイプのデコレーションでした。おわかりの通り、これはくるみ割り人形で、アイスホッケーの衣装を着ています。ホッケーのスティックを持ち、ヘルメットとユニフォーム、スケート靴まで身につけています。アイスホッケーに関連したオーナメントもたくさん見かけました。

こちらのキャップはクリスマスとは直接関係ありませんが、街中でよく見かけます。中年の男性がこうしたキャップや帽子をかぶっていることがとても多いです。カナダ国旗のロゴが入ったTシャツやパーカー、ジャケットを着ている人もいれば、国旗デザインのバッグを持っている女性もよく見かけます。私にとってはとても興味深い文化です。日本では、日本国旗をモチーフにしたものを身につけている人はほとんど見かけません。スポーツイベントや国民の記念日など、特別な場面に限られることが多いと思います。

さて、タイトルでラーメンについて書きましたが、ここからは突然ラーメンの話になります。最寄りのスーパーは何か月も改装工事をしていて、特設の割引ワゴンには人を惹きつける面白い商品がよく並びます。そこにはさまざまな国の食品があり、先日、日本の乾麺ラーメンを見つけました。日本のラーメン商品はありますが、多くは他国で製造されています。でも、この商品は日本製でした。

熊本のとんこつ風ラーメンで、とんこつと言いながらヴィーガン仕様でした。味はとても美味しく、一般的なとんこつスープのような脂っこさもありませんでした。50％オフのシールが貼られていましたが、賞味期限はまだかなり先でした。味も悪くなく、十分に新鮮でした。

インスタントラーメンでも、母が昔週末によく作ってくれた手作りラーメンのように、たくさん野菜を加えて丁寧に作るのが好きです。昼食にラーメンだとわかった瞬間、とても嬉しくなったことを今でも覚えています。

今回は、しめじと玉ねぎ、ベーコンを炒め、トッピング用にゆで卵とアスパラガスを用意しました。その後、麺をゆでました。スープの素は鍋に直接入れず、ラーメン丼に別に作ります。そうすると、少しプロっぽい味になります。さらに、海苔と梅干しもトッピングしました。寒い日に、あっという間に食べてしまいました。また割引ワゴンで見つけたら、ぜひ買いたいと思います。
