The Katadyn Hiker Microfilter is a lightweight and compact backpacking water filtration system. Ideal for those on the move, the 11-ounce device is able to filter about 200 gallons of water, depending on the quality of the water being filtered. The microfilter features a synthetic cartridge with a plunger-style filter, removing bacteria and other contaminants through numerous tiny pores. However, it's noteworthy that it does not neutralize viruses. This filtration system functions by the user forcing the water through it with an easy up and down motion of the hand. When the filter cartridge is completely clogged, it can be replaced.
The Katadyn Microfilter comes with accessory items such as output and outlet hoses, the latter preventing cross-contamination between dirty and clean water. It also includes a pre-filter that hangs in the water, a flotation device, and adapters for different water containers, including hydration bladders and water bottles. Routine maintenance involves lubricating the plunger mechanism with the provided silicone lubricant and ensuring the cartridge is dry before long term storage. The entire apparatus and its accessories can be conveniently stored in the included black storage sack. The microfilter, therefore, is a great option for backpacking, backcountry traveling, or an addition to an emergency or survival kit.
