Meanwhile, Lupega held his breath and let the current take him! With his hands tied before him he finally started to ‘dog-paddle’ to get to the surface. Once, twice, three times he came up short as the strong current pulled him back under! Finally, in a decisive thump, he found himself lodged on a fallen log and desperately pulled his head above water!

With burning lungs and three short coughs, he sucked in the sweet air of life and clung to the log in a desperate attempt to stay afloat!

[Deep in the forest...]

By mid-afternoon the smell of smoke wafted through the trees as our small group of rescuers continued south along the Niagara River…

“We’re getting close to the Seneca village!” Commander Galligan whispered as he paused, listening carefully.

“All appears to be in order…” Warrant Officer Pocketechange said quietly to Able Seaman Daveks.

“We’ll move south until the village is in sight, then hunker down til nightfall. Then we will make out move...” Galligan continued.
“If we do, I’ll be ready Sairrr!” Commander Kerrislravenhill assured.

[In the river…]

Standing Officer-Carpenter Lupega clung to the log as he breathed heavily. Turning his gaze south, he looked with apprehension.

'Would the warriors reverse course and come after him?' ° ° ° ° °

He couldn’t take that chance, and with one desperate shove he pushed himself free of the log and let the swift current sweep him away!

[On the Silverton…}

On the forecastle of the frigate Silverton, a small group of Seaman and Boys worked on untangling the jib rigging. Seamen Thecryptopimp, Mytechtrail and Blockchainyouth pulled the heavy bundle of rigging into a pile while Boys Tokenpimp and Dibblers.dabs freed-up more line near the bow.

Suddenly the fluttering of wings startled then and the big messenger pigeon Groober settled on the head of Thecryptopimp!

“Auuugh!” He exclaimed in surprise as he jumped back and jostled the bird off of his hat and held it steady.

“The messenger pigeon!” Mytechtrail declared as he turned and called down to the main deck, “Lieutenant Sairrr, the bird has returned!”

Gratefuleveryday quickly made his way to the forecastle and secured the bird, “Good work men!”

Jogging quickly to the bridge stairs he called out to the captain, *“Sairrr! Groober has returned with a message!”

“Brin' heem haur!”

Handing the bird over, Gratefuleveryday stood nervously by the big ship’s wheel. They were going on their second day and this was the first message sent back to the ship. The captain quickly unraveled the parchment and read the note…

“Bludy heel!” he cursed as he gazed south towards Youngstown a moment. His eyes were worried but a steely glaze seemed to overwhelm that,

“Grateful, send a ceilidh o' thee ower tae th' French Corvette. 🤼‍♂️ See 'att they steer 'er weel in uir wake!”
“In our wake Sairrr?”
“Aye, when they’re in position, hoist anchur an' pit uir forward jib sails tae th' win'! We’re enterin' th' river!”

Gratefuleveryday’s expression changed quickly as he processed the order- the Silverton was moving inland!

“Aye Sairrr! Three men, right away!”
