The Chinese Machine to 'compress' time and space

Souce

At Zhejiang University, in eastern China, a machine has just surpassed a limit that until recently seemed theoretical. It is called CHIEF1900 and is a hypergravity centrifuge capable of generating forces of up to 1,900 times Earth's gravity.

To have an idea of scale, a common washing machine reaches something around 2 tons G, here we are talking about almost 2,000, at an engineering level this means something really impressive, accelerating natural phenomena that would take decades, centuries or even thousands of years, condensing everything into minutes or hours of experiment.

What previously required waiting for time, can now be observed almost instantly, an example cited by the researchers themselves shows the level of this simulation, a dam model of just 3 meters high when subjected to 100 Gs, can reproduce the structural behavior of a real dam of almost 300 meters.

Failures, deformations and collapses can be studied in detail without real risks, but the use of the CHIEF1900 goes far beyond large works, the machine can also analyze how the rails of high-speed trains enter into resonance over time, or how contaminants infiltrate the ground for thousands of years or how materials degrade under continuous extreme stress, all this happens inside a robust centrifuge, similar to those used to train military pilots in high G forces, only in a completely different scale.

The challenge here is not just to spin fast, but to control heat, vibration and stability at absurd levels, to make it possible, engineers had to create an advanced thermal control system based on a vacuum environment, combining liquid cooling and forced ventilation, without that, the friction and energy generated would simply destroy the equipment.

According to the chief scientist of the project, the objective is ambitious to create experimental environments that vary from milliseconds to tens of thousands of years and from atomic scale to kilometers, under normal or extreme conditions of temperature and pressure, in other words, Chinese science is not only trying to understand the world as it is, it is trying to recreate how the world behaves over time, but much faster.

When science begins to speed up time, it is not just testing materials, it is testing the very limits of human intervention in nature.
