Thoughts On Some Psalms

I really love the poetic books of the bible. Oh don't get me wrong, the historic and prophetic books are fantastic too, but I will always have a special place in my heart for Psalms and Proverbs specifically. Without getting into too much detail, they are the ones that convicted me and brought me to bible truth at first....The history and prophecy were the nails in a sure place :)

And over the years, I've written down quite a few 'tidbits' from the Psalms so I thought I would go over and share some of my thoughts on a few...

This verse in the first Psalm always reminds me to stay in Scripture. Meditate day and night on God's Word. And sometimes I forget this simple truth. The more I'm in the bible, the better I feel. Which might seem strange to people that have not been converted but those that know, know. There is nothing better!

It's funny when I think of this verse because when I was young, even though I was never a church goer, I did believe in God. And I prayed, every single night! Up until I thought I 'knew it all'. I stopped praying at night for a few years but things started to go south, and I never put two and two together. Once I started praying at night again, I found peace. Big time!

Christians weren't called Christians at first. They were called 'The Way'. And that comes from Christ saying He was the Way. But this verse while it may be a very important verse for my denomination, shows me that the study of the sanctuary is very important. Often ignored by mainstream Christians, we learn some much of Christ and His plan of salvation from the study of the sanctuary.

Yeah I know some Christians love to ignore the royal law of God, I'm not one of them. I believe as Scripture teaches that the 10 commandments are binding forever. All 10. So sometimes, this brings up the whole 'saved by works' thing. Well, Christ followed every commandment, so if He's our example....That's what I will be judged by, how I live my live according to Him.

And arguably, one of my all time favorite verses not only in the Psalms but in the entire bible is this....A reminder that God renews us. He creates a new heart within us. So we can spend an eternity with Him.

There's so many gems in this book. I'm actually reading through them right now for two bible reading plans I'm currently doing. And every time I get a chance to go through them, I'm reminded of the wisdom. Something of an witnessing opportunity as well because showing people the Psalms and the Proverbs, isn't beating them over the head with doctrine.

In fact, I'd argue something like Proverbs is the greatest personal development book in history. And someone who might be more on the agnostic side of things, would appreciate it's wisdom. As it's not too preachy.
