Grenke Chess: Magnificent Game by Magnus Carlsen

The above position occurred in the third round of the Grenke Freestyle Chess Open between Magnus Carlsen and Nils Grandelius. In the above position Magnus just moved 31. Qf5. To my eyes it was counterintuitive since it made the Queen vulnerable to a discovered attack after Black's bishop moves. In reality it's the start of a vicious attack by White. The game continued 31....Bxc4 32. Qh5 a temporary sacrifice. Black's King will be under constant threat all throughout.

Black temporarily wins a piece 32. ...Bxe2 33. Qxh6+ Kg8 34. Qxg6+ Qg7 35. Qe6+ Rf7 36. Rh6

What a miserable position for Black. White is threatening Rg6 winning Black's Queen. Black defends with 36. ...Bd3 37. Qxb6 Rdf8 38. Rxc5

White's other Rook joins the attack and threatening Rcc6 planning Rg6 next move. Black covers the c6 square with 38. ...Be4 39. Rcc6

White gives up the Rook anyway! 39. ...Rb7 {39. ...Bxc6 40. Qxc6 and Black cannot stop Rg6} 40. Qxd4 Bxc6 41. Qc4+ {better than Rxc6} Qf7 42. e6 {Qxc6 is also winning} Qg7 43. e7+ Rf7 44. Qxc6 Qa1+ 45. Kh2
