Yesterday I was watching a film that I found interesting in the preview, although my expectations were not so high at the beginning, as I was looking for a film to have a good time, like a nice story. The Friend is a film from the year 2024, directed by filmmakers Scott McGehee and David Siegel, who were also in charge of the screenplay. This story is based on the novel written by Sigrid Nunez.

The story of the film is about Iris, a writer and teacher, who loses her friend and mentor in a sudden death that changes the lives of many people. The writer is left with her Dane, a dog who comes into her life at a time when she wasn't expecting him, turning her life upside down. Iris doesn't like dogs, she keeps him simply because of the memory of her friend. The story of this film is a good one, as it talks about grief, friendship and emotional healing through unexpected bonds. It gives us a great message of how silent companionship can be a great help in these moments.

A theme that can be touched upon in the film is the loss of a family member or friend, it is about moving on with our lives, but in the end it affects us more than we think. Iris really believes that the company of a dog is not necessary, but the reality is different, as she finally realises that with the help of animals we can heal, even the Dane was affected by the loss of his human, so they both help each other to move forward. The grief of losing a person is not always overcome, but we can cope with the help of pets.

I am one of those who previously didn't like dogs very much, I did have them, but after going through various situations, I got used to them, I even believe that their love is unconditional, they can help us in times of depression, something that many people go through and perhaps no one realises, which can lead to situations that we see in the film. The story seems good to me, a drama that at the beginning seems a bit slow and that I didn't understand very well, but as the minutes go by, the plot picks up pace and becomes a moving story with an ending that I loved.

As for the cast, I think the choice was quite good despite not knowing any of the cast, at least not that I remember. Iris was played by Naomi Watts, who, doing a little research, is a British actress who has participated in several productions of this type, although perhaps they have not transcended so much, as they have been independent productions. The truth is that I found Naomi's performance incredible, an impeccable job with which I managed to stand out quite a lot. Bill Murray as Walter, Iris's friend and Danish owner. We have the participation of other actors and actresses of less relevance in the story, but who in the end also do a good job.

The Friend was photographed by Giles Nuttgens, making a sober and emotionally resonant production, visually reaching the audience. The story is set in New York, showing locations that are quite beautiful and glamorous in some ways, but which also show the simplicity of our main characters and the grief that Iris is going through. I liked the work of the filmmakers, I think they achieved their goal, beyond some details at the beginning of the film that I already mentioned, but I think the production was great, with emotional scenes that I think reaches the viewers. The same goes for the soundtrack, which was provided by Trevor Gureckis and Jay Wadley. The music reflects exactly what the story wants to show, even bringing tears to the eyes of those who are sensitive.

La protagonista es una mujer que se quiere mostrar de cierta manera fuerte, pero la realidad era otra, pues la historia va más allá de una simple amistad. Un tema que se puede tocar en la película es la perdida de un familiar o amigo, se trata de continuar con nuestras vidas, pero al final nos afecta más de lo que uno cree. Realmente Iris cree que la compañía de un perro no es necesaria, pero la realidad es otra, pues finalmente se da cuenta de que con la ayuda de los animales podemos sanar, incluso el danés se tendía afectado por la perdida de su humano, así que ambos se ayudan mutuamente a salir adelante. Los duelos al perder una persona no siempre se supera, pero sí que la podemos sobrellevar con la ayuda de las mascotas.

Soy de los que anteriormente no me gustaban muchos los perros, sí que los tenía, pero luego de pasar diversas situaciones, me acostumbre a ellos, incluso creo que su amor es incondicional, nos pueden ayudar en momentos de depresión, algo por la cual pasan muchas personas y tal vez nadie se da cuenta, lo que puede llevar a situaciones que vemos en la película. La historia me parece buena, un drama que al principio me parece algo lento y que no entendía muy bien, pero a pesar de que pasan los minutos, la trama agarra ritmo y se convierte en una historia conmovedora con un final que encantó.

En cuanto al cast respecto, considero que la elección fue bastante buena a pesar de no conocer a ninguno del elenco, al menos no que recuerde. Iris fue interpretado por Naomi Watts, quien investigando un poco es una actriz británica que ha participado en varias producciones de este tipo, aunque tal vez no han transcendido tanto, pues han sido producciones independientes. La verdad es que la actuación de Naomi me pareció increíble, un trabajo impecable con el cual logré destacar bastante. Bill Murray como Walter, el amigo de Iris y dueño de danés.

La fotografía de The Friend estuvo a cargo de Giles Nuttgens, haciendo una producción sobria y emocionalmente resonante, logrando llegar en lo visual al público. La historia se desarrolla en Nueva York, mostrando lugares bastante hermosos y glamuroso en algunas cosas, pero que también muestra la sencillez de nuestros personajes principal y el duelo que está pasando Iris. El trabajo de los cineastas me gustó, creo que lograron su objetivo, más allá de algunos detalles al comienzo de la película que ya les mencioné, pero considero que la producción fue genial, con escenas emotivas que considero que llega a los espectadores. The story is really good, although not perfect, as it has certain details such as a slow pace at the beginning, but I can highlight its good ending, at least I liked it and it got to me. What I like the most was the performance of Naomi Watts, the photography and the soundtrack, both the music and the sound off where they give us a touch of creative fantasy.

The Friend es un drama bastante conmovedor, con una historia que nos permite analizar el duelo al perder un ser querido y la ayuda que podemos encontrar con el apoyo de las mascotas, un apoyo emocional que nos puede ayudar en estos momentos complicados que podemos pasar en nuestras vidas. La historia es realmente buena, aunque no perfecta, puesto que tiene ciertos detalles como un ritmo lento al principio, pero puedo destacar su buen final, al menos a mí me gustó y me llegó. Lo que más me gusta fue la actuación de Naomi Watts, la fotografía y la banda sonora, tanto la música como el sonido en off donde nos dan un toque de fantasía creativa.
