Computing Power, Electricity and Transformers: The Flexibility Added by Energy Storage [中文/English]

The claim that "computing power relies on electricity, and electricity relies on transformers" highlights their rigid connection. That’s true, but it misses one key thing: energy storage makes this system more flexible.
Computing power uses a lot of electricity. Servers and GPUs can’t work without it — they depend totally on electricity. To get electricity from power plants to data centers, transformers have three jobs: boost voltage to send power far with less loss, lower it for distribution, and reduce it again to match the equipment’s needs. Transformers are a key link for efficient power transfer, not the end.
AI computing power is growing fast. This pushes power systems to improve and also makes transformers better — they’re becoming more energy-efficient and intelligent. High-efficiency transformers reduce global power transmission losses by 8%, which supports the dual-carbon goal.
However, energy storage breaks the static bottleneck in the original claim. It solves the "use it right away or waste it" problem for electricity: store solar or wind power during the day, then supply it to data centers at night. It also handles sudden surges in computing power, so we don’t need to build too many transformers just for short peaks — thus reducing investment costs.
In short, computing power runs on electricity, electricity moves through transformers, and energy storage turns this rigid chain into flexible teamwork. It’s a key component that links the digital and energy industries together.
