Protest

This week on Tuesday, I went to visit the Art Nouveau gallery as I haven't been there for awhile and as I left the city the next day, knew I may miss a good exhibition. Turned out it was the best decision I could make as it was the last week of a lovely exhibition and would have definitely missed it.

After so many years, I'm a regular there and the lady knows me well, therefore we always have a chat about what's on display and express our opinions.

The title of this exhibition was "Protest". Now, we all know what the word means, but from the meaning to the artwork it's a long way. After going through the exhibition, I asked the lady how are these exhibitions organized and found out there's the association of artists and you can only be a member if you have graduated from art school/university. Amateurs have no place there.

Each exhibition has a topic or a theme, which is announced well in advance and participation is up to each artist. If they have something that fits the topic, or can create something new till the exhibition date, they can participate.

As I mentioned at the beginning of my post, the topic of this exhibition was "Protest", which means each participating artist had the chance to express their thoughts, their view on the matter and show us how they see a "protest".

This was the first thing I saw when stepped inside the gallery. It was a bittersweet feeling as I knew the works were great, but the light ... The sun was shining outside, the gallery has glass walls and as you can see, some shadows made my job difficult.

Mana Bucur: Positive - Negative

The coolest thing about this exhibition was that each artwork not only had a title, but had a short explanation, or description as well. This type or exhibition is very rare, most of the exhibitions have artworks that don't even have a title, let alone a description, so everything is left to the imagination and understanding of the visitor. It's not a bad thing at all, it's good to see what the artist's idea was for once.

Positive - negative, white - black, good - bad, pro - con ... we're living under these contrasts (Yin & Yang) of which balance should never be broken.

Dalma Nagy - Nature's Exuberance

This is a fantastic shot, with deep meaning. I used to call similar shots "when nature takes over" and love taking such photos. Basically everything belongs t nature, humans are occupying their territory, but slowly nature takes back what it is theirs.

Regina Ioana Ionescu - Tense Landscape

This was where I really appreciated having some thoughts from the artist. First I wanted to see for myself and try to formulate my thoughts, then read the description. What do you think happened?

My thoughts and understanding on the collage was that this is how a human being is trying to manage life, calm and direct the water, high tides, to avoid problems. Was I wrong? Oh boy, big time!

This collage refers to a reaction to political conflicts and tensions. Like when artists are accused of siding and supporting one party or the other. Now go back, have a look and see if you could have guessed it. I couldn't.

Annamária Nagy - Drifting Against The Tide

This was a nice one and most likely is going to ruffle some feathers. Especially of those who are into digital art.

The concept of the work is based on the absurdity given by the antithesis between two opposing ideas: on the foreground (in the composition) we observe the act of opposition (resistance) to a new current, represented by the figure of the artist, who engraves the text "No Digital Art", turning her back in a proper and symbolic way to digital art, symbolized by a monitor. The absurd element emerges from the second plan, that of digital techniques, with which the work itself was made, suggesting the act of surrender in front of the new trend. This is how the conflict of the self appears in an ironic way.

Now, what do you think? Did you nail it? I doubt it 😂 but it's ok.

Enikő Bíró Kálmán - Burst 1, Burst 2

These two artworks symbolizes the artist's protest against the irresponsibility of humanity, corruption in politics and so on.

Honestly, seeing these works without explanation would have caused me missing the point. The artist says, when you have words, you can shout and scream, but when you only have graphics, this is how her protest looks like. Knowing all this, I can say, it's very expressive.

This is the first port about my visit. I tried to explain my experience, how I saw things, but I'm really curious how you see these works. Let me know in a comment.
