Rest and Sleep

I miss those days when I had the entire day to sleep, it's a privilege everyone once had before adulthood sets in. A privilege that lasts for a few years before one understands the need for sacrifice and responsibility.

I was 18 when I had my first job. I woke up as early as 6am to catch up with the company's bus, and returned home by 7pm. Just before I was done with freshening up and eating dinner, it was already 9pm- a time to sleep and rejuvenate one's energy. There was rarely enough time to sleep or rest, except for Sundays, which was also a busy day. I needed rest, but I was beginning to understand the need to work for money to solve my daily needs. My body must have told my mind I'm no longer a teenager, and my being conformed to this new reality.

Rest is important but one can't get a good rest as long as there are bills piled up. Nowadays, I still enjoy 4-5 hours of sleep and that's because I work online and it takes just a few hours to be done with most of the tasks that are required. Working offline denied me that privilege, yet I get little when all my expenses are extracted from my monthly income.

To be sincere, most of my rest has not been the quality kind of sleep, only the rich have this privilege to enjoy. I rest because I need one and not because it has quality attached to it. One rarely gets quality sleep when his mind is crowded with things he needs to pay for and thoughts on tomorrow's welfare. To me, I see quality sleep or rest as staying off everything and having a good time relaxing in a luxurious place, and that I have never gotten. The only bridge I see between resting and staying awake working so hard is money. Once one is financially stable, it becomes easy to balance sleep and work, or enjoy quality rest. As long as one is striving, especially with piled up responsibilities, there's a limit to how much or how well he can rest.
