A Pandemic Garden Blessing: Banana Harvest and Finding Peace in Farming

Hello, friends in @gardenhive!🌿
Back in the pandemic days, life felt uncertain. Many people lost jobs, stores were closed and everything seemed more expensive. My husband and I were worried too. But instead of just waiting, my husband started planting bananas in our backyard. He said, Lets use the land we have. At the time, I didn’t think of much of it. But now, I’m truly grateful he made that decision.
This year, we finally harvested two types of bananas: Saba and Tondan.
Saba bananas we thick and firm – perfect for cooking. We use them for banana cue, turon and simple boiled for snacks. When they’re cooked, the small brings back warm memories of childhood. Tondan bananas on the other hand. Are soft and naturally sweet. They’re best eaten fresh, Just peel and enjoy. My children love them!
Seeing the banana brunches hanging from the trees made me smile. It’s such a simple sight, but it brings deep joy. Something we planted a few years ago is now feeding us. We even enough tos hare with neighbors and friends.
That’s when I realized something important. There is no hunger when you grow your own food.
We may live a quite and simple life, But we are content. We eat fresh food from our garden. We don’t worry about what to cook every day because the land gives us what we need. We wake up peacefully, knowing we have something growing outside that we can harvest. This life may seem plain to others, but for us, it is full of meaning and quite blessings.
Of course, it wasn’t always easy, we had to wait. We took care of the plants watered them, and made sure stayed healthy. But the patience and effort were worth it.
One more thing I truly enjoy – Saba banana is best with bagoong, calamansi and chili. The mix of salty, sour, and spicy makes it a humble but unforgettable dish.
I hope our story can inspire others. If you have space, plant something. It doesn’t need to be big. Start with what you can. Even small harvests can bring big joy.
Looking back, I’m thankful we made that small choice during the pandemic. It reminded us that nature provides and that even in hard times, we can grow something beautiful and useful.
There were hard days, too. Some plants didn’t survive. There were weeks when nothing seemed to grow. We had to deal with pests, dry says and little rain. But we kept going. We kept checking the leaves. We believed that with care, the land would give back. And it did.
So here we are now, enjoying our bananas, living simply, and feeling proud of the little farm we care for with love,
