In many parts of the world at this time of year, homes and streets are decorated with two main elements: Christmas trees and nativity scenes.
Today, in particular, we will explore the tradition of the nativity scene in various parts of Italy.

In molte parti del mondo in questo periodo dell’anno si addobbano le case e le strade con due principali elementi: gli alberi e i presepi.
In particolare, oggi approfondiamo la tradizione del presepe nelle varie parti d’Italia.
We all know that the nativity scene represents the Christian Nativity and that its roots lie in the Middle Ages. Probably the first nativity scene was created by Francis of Assisi, who set it up using a manger, hay, a real ox and a donkey, and celebrated Midnight Mass in that setting. This representation had a strong didactic and devotional purpose, touching the hearts of the faithful in a new way.
Over the centuries, however, this tradition has changed considerably, becoming mostly a form of popular art that combines spiritual devotion with craftsmanship.
Tutti sappiamo che il presepe rappresenta la Natività cristiana e che affonda le sue radici nel Medioevo. Probabilmente il primo presepe venne creato da Francesco d’Assisi, che lo allestì utilizzando una mangiatoia, fieno, un bue e un asinello veri e celebrando la Messa di mezzanotte in quel contesto. Questa rappresentazione aveva un forte scopo didattico e devozionale, toccando il cuore dei fedeli in un modo nuovo.
Nel corso dei secoli, però, questa tradizione è molto cambiata, diventando per lo più una forma d'arte popolare che unisce la devozione spirituale con l'abilità artigianale.
From Northern to Southern Italy, there are numerous interesting traditions, because each region has developed its own interpretation of the Nativity with curious landscapes and characters.
The Neapolitan nativity scene is famous throughout the world. Born in the 18th century, it is a true theatrical representation of popular life. For example, in addition to the shepherd and the Magi, there are also figures taken from the common people, such as the fruit seller, the fisherman, the baker, ... Up to the present day with folkloric figurines such as footballers and actors!
Da Nord a Sud Italia, ci sono numerose tradizioni interessanti, perché ogni regione ha sviluppato una propria interpretazione della Natività con anche paesaggi e personaggi curiosi.
Il presepe napoletano è famoso in tutto il mondo. Nato nel 700, è una vera e propria rappresentazione teatrale della vita popolare. Ad esempio, oltre al pastore e ai Magi, ci sono anche figure tratte dal popolo, come il venditore di frutta, il pescatore, il panettiere, … Fino ad arrivare ai giorni nostri con statuette folkloristiche come i calciatori e gli attori dello spettacolo!
In the valleys of Northern Italy, however, such as in Trentino-Alto Adige, the nativity scene is often a single piece carved in wood. The watchword is simplicity, and the colors are very soft or the wood is left in its natural state. The landscape is obviously mountainous, with chalets, snow, and forest animals.
The materials can also vary, because in Sicily the terracotta nativity scene is very famous, while in Puglia papier-mâché nativity scenes are widespread.

Nelle valli del Nord Italia, invece, come per esempio in Trentino-Alto Adige, il presepe è spesso un pezzo unico intagliato nel legno. La parola d’ordine è la semplicità e anche i colori sono molto tenui oppure legno lasciato al naturale. Il paesaggio è ovviamente montano, con baite, neve e animali del bosco.
Anche i materiali possono essere diversi, perché in Sicilia è molto famoso il presepe di terracotta, mentre in Puglia sono diffusi i presepi in cartapesta.
