Just finished The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. Perfect timing with Valentine’s Day!

It’s such an insightful book with practical advice! I’d recommend it to everyone—because the principles translate well to all kind of relationships. It really resonated with me because the author took something we all experience and broke it down into a simple, easy-to-follow principle. When I reflected on it, I thought, “Oh, that makes so much more sense now!"

Here are my top takeaways:

- Everyone has all five love languages, but each person has one (or two) primary love languages that make them feel most loved. It’s the one that resonates most deeply and truly fills their emotional tank.

- Feeling “unloved” or emotionally empty happens when partners speak different love languages without realizing it.

- Every person has an emotional tank. When their emotional needs are not met, the tank is empty, and the person withdraws and feels “unloved.”

- Nagging is usually a cry for an unmet emotional need. It’s usually about love not being expressed in the way the person needs most.

- By learning your partner’s love language, you can fill their emotional tank and make them feel loved. When their tank is full, they’ll usually want to do the same for you.

- Intense romantic feelings typically fade after about two years. Couples who don’t recognize or meet each other’s emotional needs risk falling into the same unhealthy cycle—falling in love, feeling disconnected, and then divorce.

- Love is a choice. Meeting your partner’s emotional needs (learning their love language) may not come naturally to you, or even be difficult—but this is what you choose to do because it makes your partner feel loved.

How to identify your love language?

There are lots of clues! It might be something you often do for your partner (because that’s what makes you feel loved), something you often complain about, or simply what you wish your partner did for you.

What are the love languages? I’m not gonna spoil it for you—read or listen to the book to find out!
