Graphic prints with Gel Press: A wonderful creative tool and how to use it [ENG/ESP]

Greetings to everyone in the Hive DIY community! Today I'm joining you here to share a special post dedicated to gel printing. On this occasion, I'm bringing you a tool that I've wanted to try for a long time and that I found super innovative and beautiful: Gel Print. I like to do things on my own, such as painting and making things by hand, and while I was looking at Instagram (searching for some ideas to do in the classroom), I found someone who was dedicated to making prints with gel print. It's a mixed media/graphic arts project: stencils, matrices, paint or ink, and of course... prints. Join me to see this first attempt.
When I first saw what they were doing with this gel (plate), the designs and images obtained were so picturesque, fun, and original that I decided to look for that gel plate with which the images are printed. I couldn't find it in my country, but my sister found it where she lives. So I am grateful to my sister for this gift. All I had to do was get to work. To start, I picked some flowers, thin branches, and leaves that I found in the garden of my residence. The great thing about this plate is that you can make prints with: elements from nature and various objects (nothing sharp or that could damage the plate), magazine clippings and photographs, stencils, brushes, and more. Whatever you can think of. But I would highlight the printing of photographic images, especially those with high contrast, as you get a faithful replica and you can intervene with paint, leaving a more personal finish.

En esta ocasión, precisamente, traigo una herramienta que hace mucho tiempo quería probar y que me parecía súper innovadora y bella: el Gel Print. Me gusta hacer cosas por mi cuenta, tanto cómo pintar, cómo hacer algunas cuestiones a mano y justamente, mientras veía el Instagram (buscando algunas propuestas para hacer en el salón de clase), encontré a una persona que se dedicaba a hacer puras impresiones con gel print. Es una intervención de artes mixtas/artes gráficas: plantillas, matrices, pintura o tinta y por supuesto... Impresiones. Acompañame a ver este primer intento.
Cuando ví por primera vez lo que hacían con este gel (placa), los diseños e imágenes obtenidas eran tan pintorescas, divertidas y originales, que decidí buscar esa placa de gel con la cual se imprimen las imágenes. No encontré en mi país, pero mi hermana si encontró en dónde ella vive. Así que agradezco a mi hermana por este regalo. Así que solo me faltaba poner manos a la obra. Para empezar, recogí algunas flores, ramas delgadas y hojas que encontré en el jardín de mi residencia. Las cualidades de esta placa estan en que puedes hacer impresiones con: elementos de la naturaleza y objetos varios (no punzantes, ni que puedan dañar la placa), recortes de revistas y fotografías, estencil, intervención con pinceles y demás. Lo que se te ocurra. Pero yo destacaría la impresión de imágenes fotográficas, sobre todo con alto contraste pues se obtiene una réplica fiel y se puede intervenir con pintura, dejando un acabado más personal.
What do you need for printing? The gel plate, a flat surface to work on, an engraving roller (vinyl ones that are specially designed for working with ink), white sheets of paper (preferably heavier weight paper), acrylic paint (this works perfectly, or you can use ink if you prefer).
Here's how it works: place the gel plate on a clean, non-porous, even surface, then apply the acrylic paint of your choice (I recommend working from dark to light) onto the plate and spread the paint evenly across the plate with the roller. Next, arrange the flowers, leaves, and branches in the composition you like best. Before the paint dries, place a white sheet of paper on top of the plate and press down on it to get that first impression, which serves to clean the background. It is important to let the paint dry a little before removing the sheets and everything else, as that first film must be created. The next step is to apply a new coat of paint (which may be the final one if you are not going to add any more elements) and spread it again with the roller. Then, place the sheet of paper on top while the paint is still wet and let it dry for approximately 10 minutes. Remove the sheet and your print is ready.
¿Qué necesitas para las impresiones? La placa de gel, una superficie plana dónde trabajar, un rodillo para grabado (los que son de vinil y especiales para trabajar con tinta), hojas blancas (mejor si son hojas de un gramaje mayor), pintura acrílica (perfectamente se puede hacer con ella o si lo quieres, con tinta).
La cuestión procede así: coloca la placa de gel en una superficie limpia, no porosa y que sea uniforme, luego vas a colocar la pintura acrílica de tu elección (recomiendo trabajar de oscuros a claros) sobre la placa y vas a esparcir homogéneamente la pintura con el rodillo por toda la placa, luego vas a colocar las flores, hojas y ramas que tengas en la composición que más te parezca y antes de que se seque la pintura, vas a colocar una hoja blanca encima de la placa y presionar sobre ella para obtener esa primera impresión que sirve para limpiar el fondo. Es importante dejar secar un poco la pintura antes de retirar las hojas y todo, pues se debe crear esa primera película. El siguiente paso es colocar una nueva capa de pintura (que puede ser la definitiva si no vas a colocar más elementos) y esparcir con el rodillo nuevamente y allí justamente colocamos la hoja de papel mientras está fresca la pintura y dejamos secar por aproximadamente 10 minutos. Retiramos la hoja y tenemos lista nuestra impresión.
Since it was my first time doing something like this, I did something simple to test how it worked. Then we made one with magazine paper featuring a woman, some words, and so on: I liked it. I must say that this is a project I want to work on with my partner, as he is a photographer and we want to print some of his photographs to paint on and create new things. Cómo era mi primera vez haciendo algo así, hice algo sencillo para probar como funcionaba. Luego hicimos una con papel de revista donde había una mujer, algunas palabras y así: me gustó. Debo decir que este es un proyecto en el que deseo trabajar con mi pareja pues él es fotógrafo y queremos imprimir algunas de sus fotografías para intervenir con pinturas y crear nuevas cosas. Me emociona mucho esto, así que estoy muy feliz de poder tener esta herramienta conmigo y espero sacarle todo el provecho posible. Les traeré más novedades en el futuro.
