Trump threatens to impose additional 100% tariff on China
"President Donald Trump has threatened to pull out of an expected meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, signalling a flare-up in trade tensions
[...] He said he saw "no reason" to meet with President Xi later this month, and later on Friday threatened an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods as well as export controls on "critical software".
The new measures against China will take effect on 1 November"
--- Well, all roads lead to Trump again. Of course it has nothing to do with that:
"In addition to tightening rules for rare earth exports, China has opened a monopoly investigation into the US tech firm Qualcomm that could stall its acquisition of another chipmaker.
[...] Beijing has also said it will charge new port fees to ships with ties to the US, including those owned or operated by US firms."
--- Doesn't look like Trump is the instigator in this case, but what do I know?

China tightens export rules for crucial rare earths
"The ministry announced similar restrictions on the export of lithium batteries and some forms of graphite, which are also essential components in the global tech supply chain and largely produced in China.
Beijing said the regulations are intended to "safeguard national security"."
--- Which proves again that Chinese promises are worth nothing.

China blacklists major chip research firm TechInsights following report on Huawei
"Beijing’s crackdown on TechInsights came less than a week after the firm revealed that a breakdown of Huawei’s latest artificial intelligence chips found components sourced from outside mainland China.
[...] The findings by TechInsights about Huawei’s latest “Ascend” AI chips were consistent with those from other research firms like SemiAnalysis, which said that the Chinese company relies on technology from memory chipmakers like Samsung Electronics and contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC). "
--- The truth is a national security threat in China.

Trump proposes leveling playing field with China on flights over Russia to and from US
"The Trump administration on Thursday proposed barring Chinese airlines from flying through Russian airspace on routes to and from the United States, arguing that the shorter flight times this allows give them an "unfair" advantage over U.S. carriers."
--- It does, but is it their fault?
"In a separate development, Boeing is reportedly in talks to sell up to 500 jets to China — a potential breakthrough in the world’s second-largest aviation market"
--- That breakthrough might not happen, because, well, Trump has more ideas of how to hurt China:
Trump threatens export controls on Boeing parts in response to China

"The proposed EU move comes after US President Donald Trump also imposed 50% tariffs to keep out cheap metal imports from the Asian giant.
[...] The scheme is meant to permanently replace the safeguard clause that is currently in place, in which 25% duties are imposed when set import quotas are exceeded. That clause expires next year."
--- Almost too late, since much of the European steel industry has already been destroyed, but not only due to Chinese dumping, but also due to European and particularly German regulations.

Suspected Chinese government operatives used ChatGPT to shape mass surveillance proposals, OpenAI says
"The US State Department in the first Trump administration accused the Chinese government of genocide and crimes against humanity against Uyghur Muslims, a charge that Beijing vehemently denies."
--- Oh, CNN, what a shitshow you are! It was not only Trump that accused China of genocidal behavior against the Uyghurs. There were numerous similar allegations from humanitarian organizations, from the UN, from other countries, and what's more: there is evidence.
"The OpenAI report includes several other examples of just how commonplace AI is in the daily operations of state-backed and criminal hackers, along with other scammers. Suspected Russian, North Korean and Chinese hackers have all used ChatGPT to perform tasks like refining their coding or make the phishing links they send to targets more plausible.
One way state actors are using AI is to improve in areas where they had weaknesses in the past. For instance, Chinese and Russian state actors have often struggled to avoid basic language errors in influence operations on social media."
--- Hmm, if they know who's doing it, why aren't they blocking it? On the other hand, if they know what the Chinese spies are doing on ChatGPT, then they at least also can prevent some of the things these spies may be planning.

"Some of the world’s largest hydropower projects are currently being built on Tibet’s rivers, which are directly tied to China’s green and clean energy transition."
--- Green and clean, yeah right. Mega dams are neither green nor clean.
"Anti-mining protests have occurred, and environmental concerns have been raised. Instead of addressing issues like soil erosion and threats to local communities, authorities have tightened surveillance and censored online discussion."
--- Because the environment is not actually a concern for the CCP. Keeping its power is.

Million-year-old skull rewrites human evolution, scientists claim
"A million-year-old human skull found in China suggests that our species, Homo sapiens, began to emerge at least half a million years earlier than we thought, researchers are claiming in a new study.
It also shows that we co-existed with other sister species, including Neanderthals, for much longer than we've come to believe, they say.
The scientists claim their analysis "totally changes" our understanding of human evolution and, if correct, it would certainly rewrite a key early chapter in our history."
--- Utter bullshit. This is probably just another attempt by Chinese so-called scientists to prove that mankind developed in China.
"It is now thought to be an early version of Homo longi, a sister species at similar levels of development to Neanderthals and Homo sapiens.
Genetic evidence suggests it existed alongside them, so if Yunxian 2 walked the Earth a million years ago, say the scientists, early versions of Neanderthal and our own species probably did too."
--- They are talking about Denisovans here, and when it comes to the dating of the find, well, we still have to wait and see whether that's actually true. Either way, for what I know, we also have genetic evidence about when Homo sapiens developed, and I doubt that that will go as far back as one million years.

Und was macht man?
