These are my favorite Disney villains [ESP/ENG]

Throughout Disney's entire film catalog, we've found stories of all kinds, generally a sort of "fan fiction" of Grimm's fairy tales, classic books, or mythologies from around the world. These stories are often toned down to avoid offending sensibilities, obviously, since it's an industry that generates content aimed at children. And of course, there have been all kinds of villains in these films, some more cartoonish and others more realistic. But among them all, today I want to talk about my favorites. I chose two that will also serve as a contrast because, despite being villains and obviously having selfish interests, they are very different from each other.

A lo largo de todo el repertorio de películas que tiene Disney en su haber hemos encontrado historias de todo tipo, por lo general una suerte de "fanfics" de los cuentos de los hermanos Grimm, de libros clásicos o mitologías del mundo en general, historias a menudo suavizadas para no herir susceptibilidades obviamente ya que se trata de una industria que genera contenido dirigido a niños, y por supuesto que ha habido todo tipo de villanos en estas películas, algunos más caricaturescos y otros más realistas pero entre todos ellos hoy quiero hablarles acerca de mis favoritos, elegí dos que al mismo tiempo servirán de contraste pues a pesar de ser villanos y de tener obviamente intereses egoístas, son muy distintos entre sí.

Hades

Despite being quite different from my gothic, tragic, and darker vision of the original Hades (the one described in Greek mythology), I really liked this Disney version. He's an unusual villain; he's still evil, selfish, and wicked, but at the same time, we can't deny that he's incredibly charismatic and sarcastic. His explosive temper makes me laugh because, despite being manipulative, he gets frustrated easily and very quickly, and he's a far cry from the serious villains Disney had presented up to that point. 😄 In fact, my favorite scene is when he summons the Titans and they begin to advance menacingly, but then Hades breaks the solemnity of the moment with a comment that reveals his frustration and disappointment at the Titans' clumsiness: "Olympus is over there."

A pesar de ser realmente diferente a esa visión gótica, trágica y más sombría que yo tengo del Hades original (el descrito en la mitología griega) me gustó mucho esta versión de Disney pues es un villano fuera de lo común, él no deja de ser malo, egoísta y perverso pero al mismo tiempo no podemos negar que es sumamente carismático y sarcástico. Su temperamento explosivo me hace reír porque a pesar de que es manipulador se frustra fácilmente y muy rápido y además dista mucho de los villanos serios que Disney había presentado hasta ese momento. 😄 de hecho mi escena favorita es cuando él llama a los titanes y estos empiezan a avanzar de manera amenazante, pero entonces Hades rompe la solemnidad del momento con un comentario que denota su frustración de decepción ante la torpeza de los titanes: "El Olimpo queda para allá"

But that charismatic and funny personality contrasts sharply with his design: sloping shoulders, dull colors like grays and blues that, according to color psychology, represent sadness and death. I love the movement of his hair, which resembles a blue flame, but turns red when he gets angry; in fact, his entire body is engulfed in flames. This means that despite being a funny and charismatic villain, he remains threatening, as his style is based on manipulation and control.

Pero esa personalidad carismática y graciosa sí contrasta con su diseño: Hombros caídos, colores opacos como grises y azules que según la psicología del color representan la tristeza y la muerte. Me encanta el movimiento de su pelo que simula ser una llama de fuego azul, pero cambia a rojo cuando se enoja, de hecho, todo él se llena de llamas, lo que significa que a pesar de ser un villano gracioso y carismático, no deja de ser amenazante pues su estilo es la manipulación y el control.

Claude Frollo

Now you understand why this one is so different from the previous villain, right? In my opinion, Frollo is a more human villain, and I don't mean the romantic sense of the word, the sense we usually give it. No, I mean that he's a villain more grounded in reality. And how could he not be? He's inspired by Victor Hugo's novel, Notre-Dame de Paris, where the author criticizes the society of the time, and especially the hypocrisy of some members of the clergy. Frollo is a man tormented by guilt, though he doesn't admit it. He fears God and divine judgment; in fact, this is evident in the song he sings, "Hellfire," and even in several scenes, we see that he fears the gaze of the statues adorning Notre Dame Cathedral because he knows he's acting wrongly. The thing is, he simply can't escape his own desires, but instead of admitting it and trying to redeem himself, he prefers to place the blame on innocents like Esmeralda.

Ahora comprenden porqué este es tan diferente al villano anterior ¿no? En mi opinión Frollo es un villano más humano, y no me refiero al sentido romántico de la palabra, el sentido que le damos generalmente, no, me refiero a que es un villano más apegado a la realidad y ¿Cómo no? si está inspirado en la novela Nuestra señora de París de Víctor Hugo, donde él autor hace una critica a la sociedad de la época, y en especial a la hipocresía de algunos miembros del clero. Frollo es un hombre atormentado por las culpas aunque no las admite, le teme a Dios y al juicio divino, de hecho eso se evidencia en la canción que canta "Fuego de Infierno" e incluso en varias escenas vemos que él le teme a la mirada de las estatuas que adornan la catedral de Notre Dame, porque sabe que él está actuando mal, lo que sucede es que simplemente no puede huir de sus propios deseos, pero en lugar de admitirlo e intentar redimirse prefiere dejar caer las culpas sobre inocentes como Esmeralda.

Frollo is terrifying because he represents the real power that some of those at the top have always had, protected by religious or political institutions, and which they exercise over the most vulnerable, acting with deceit, manipulation, and hypocrisy. In the Disney version, he is not actually a priest but a judge, but he was strongly influenced by religion and used it to maintain an image of righteousness, generosity, and piety with which he sought to hide his true intentions. Frollo is perverse, inhuman, cruel, and cowardly, but the worst thing about him is that there are people like him in the real world, people who tarnish the name of the religion or institution they represent, as many believe that they are all like that. However, Disney showed a counterpart to Frollo in the character of the Archdeacon of Notre Dame, a true man of faith, pious and noble, who acts as Frollo's conscience, warning him that even if he denies his guilt, he will not be able to escape divine judgment and punishment, for God sees all, and his words fill the villain with horror because he knows they are true. Although he does not practice the good deeds he promotes, he is a man attached to his beliefs. The archdeacon also imposes justice, delegating to Frollo the responsibility of raising the child he has just left motherless.

Frollo es aterrador porque representa el poder real que siempre han tenido algunos de los que están arriba, amparados por instituciones religiosas o políticas, y que ejercen sobre los más vulnerables, actúan con engaños, manipulaciones e hipocresía. En la versión de Disney no es propiamente un sacerdote sino un juez, pero estaba fuertemente influenciado por la religión y se amparaba en ella para mantener una imagen de rectitud, generosidad y piedad con la que pretendía ocultar sus verdaderas intenciones. Frollo es perverso, inhumano, cruel y cobarde, pero lo peor de él es que existen personas así en el mundo real, son personas que enlodan el nombre de la religión o institución que representan, pues muchos opina que todos son así, sin embargo Disney mostró una contraparte de Frollo en el personaje del arcediano de Notre Dame, un verdadero hombre de fe, piadoso y noble, que actúa como la consciencia de Frollo, advirtiéndole que a pesar de que niegue sus culpas no podrá escapar del juicio y el castigo divino, pues Dios todo lo ve, y sus palabras llenan de horror al villano porque sabe que son reales, pues aunque él no practica las buenas acciones que promueve, es un hombre apegado a sus creencias. El arcediano además impone justicia, delegando en Frollo la responsabilidad de criar al niño que acababa de dejar sin madre.
