Worldbuilding Weekend Prompt #114 - Sargasso Sea
1 comment
Welcome to the next in an ongoing series of writing prompts in the Worldbuilding community !
I'm aiming to post one of these each Sunday. They aren't a replacement for the excellent daily prompts from @worldbuilding they're just an extra opportunity if you have a writing itch you want to scratch. 😀

The prompt this week is - Sargasso Sea
In the real world, the Sargasso Sea is a part of the Atlantic Ocean surrounded by currents which keep the brown sargassum seaweed (after which it's named) floating on it's surface contained within it's area. The nature of the currents also means that it's an area with frequent low winds.
In the early days of European voyages to the Americas, this led to legends of it being a place where ships became permanently becalmed or mired in seaweed, full of ghost ships and sea monsters. The idea has transferred to science fiction, where strange phenomena can cause areas of space or the centres of nebulae which have become vast perilous graveyards full of derelict ships, both human and alien.
Tell me a story of a Sargasso Sea like place from your setting ! What causes ships to be abandoned there ? What happens to the crew - do they die, or become ghosts or zombies ? What kills them - starvation, madness, or monsters ? What other hazards lurk there, both mundane and supernatural ?
Just to add a bit of spice to things, the two entries I most like (and are linked in comments to this post, so I can find them !) that are posted by midnight (GMT) next Saturday will each get a prize of one Hive SBI.
This link will take you to the FAQ where you can read more about Hive SBI - it's a project I thoroughly support because it gives both the donor and winner a steady trickle of passive income paid out in the form of upvotes on posts.
