I love animals, they are a sample of the great variety and diversity present on the planet, so every time I have the opportunity to dedicate a publication to one of them, it is wonderful. So, while I was checking the world and international days of the current month, I discovered two interesting dates for today, one of them is: World Wetlands Day and the other one is Groundhog Day, and although both are attractive dates and go perfectly together to upload information to this community, I decided to choose the second one.

Now, in my life I have never seen a marmot, which makes me a little sad, since I think they are very beautiful because of their roundness, but to see them in captivity, I prefer to stay with the curiosity, since I believe that animals should live free in their corresponding habitats.

If you are Catholic you know that today is celebrated the day of La Candelaria, long ago many files of the countries where there are harsh winters took advantage of this date to go to church and took candles to bless them or passed them looking for that parents had already blessed some, because some believe that these blessed candles protect their homes during the winter.

As the years went by, this religious custom was associated to the behavior of certain animals that had natural ways of knowing if winter was near or about to end, for example in Germany a hedgehog was introduced, this little animal by means of its shadow would say how much winter or bad weather they would have.

With the colonization of the American continent, some of the colonizers took with them the traditions of their places of origin, among them, to rely on the behavior of some animal that would give them the weather alert, but not having hedgehogs, they would choose a similar hibernating animal, the groundhog. Now let's talk a little about the characteristics of this cute, round animal.

Where they live

Woodchucks live in regions north of the equator. They can be found in the United States and Canada, in Europe near the Alps and in parts of Asia north of the Himalayas. They build their homes on plains...

Physical characteristics

Woodchucks have a bulky body that is typically between 30 and 60 centimeters (12-24 inches) long. The tail is about one-third the length of the body. Groundhogs range in weight from 3 to 7 kilograms (7-15 pounds). Their coarse fur ranges from yellowish to reddish or dark brown.... Their ears are small. Woodchucks have stout legs and heavy claws, which they use for digging in the ground.

Behavior

Although they can swim and climb trees, groundhogs spend most of their time on the ground or underground. They dig elaborate burrow systems that have more than one entrance and tunnels leading to habitable chambers and waste chambers.

During the winter, woodchucks use the burrows for hibernation. Hibernation is a period of inactivity that can last several weeks. When hibernating, groundhogs breathe slowly and their heart beats only a few times per minute. Their body cools to a temperature just above freezing. Over the course of the winter, the groundhog may wake up several times to eliminate waste, but at no time does it feed. To survive through the winter, they feed on fat that they store after eating large amounts of food during the summer and fall.

Woodchucks consume grasses and other plant foods, such as fruits and grains. Like all other animals in the squirrel family, woodchucks can sit upright and use their front paws as hands to grasp food.

Now, the relationship between man and groundhog, is not always the best since groundhogs feeding on plants, sometimes end up with crops and therefore sometimes they are hunted, plus their skins and meat are used in some regions of the world, but as I mentioned at the beginning of the publication, this cute rodent is considered a respected weather forecaster, in some countries this relationship is celebrated and hence was born this celebration of Groundhog Day.

A curious fact is that in several cities in the USA there are famous groundhogs, that is to say they are personalities, very well cared for and spoiled and on February 2nd many gather to watch the ceremony, in which these famous animals come out and indicate by means of their shadows, if the winter will last 6 more weeks or if it has ended, but for this year New Jersey is sad because their spoiled groundhog Milltown Mel, died suddenly before the ceremony in question, they presume it was due to his age since groundhogs live about 3 years.

Finally, these cute animals have had a direct relationship with nature knowing how to recognize when winter begins and ends, something that man observed and has taken advantage of to predict the end of winter, now I say goodbye, waiting to read your impressions in the comments box.

Los animales me encantan, son una muestra de la gran variedad y diversidad presente en el planeta, así que cada vez que se me presenta la oportunidad de dedicar una publicación a alguno de ellos, es maravilloso. Ya que puedo dar a conocer algo que conozco y lo que voy descubriendo al investigar al respecto, así mientras revisaba los días mundiales e internacionales del mes en curso, descubrí dos fechas interesantes para hoy una de ellas es: Día Mundial de los Humedales y la otra Día de la Marmota y aunque las dos son fechas atrayentes y van perfectamente de la mano para subir información a esta comunidad, me decidí por la segunda.

Ahora bien, en mi vida he visto una marmota, cosa que me pone un poco triste, ya que me parecen muy bonitas por su redondez, pero para verla en cautiverio, prefiero quedarme con la curiosidad, ya que creo que los animales deben vivir libres en sus correspondientes hábitats.

Si eres católico sabes que hoy se celebra el día de La Candelaria, hace ya tiempo muchos files de los países en los que hay crudos inviernos aprovechaban esta fecha para ir a la iglesia y llevaban velas para bendecirlas o las pasaban buscando ya que los padres ya habían bendecido algunas, debido a que algunos creen de que estas velas bendecidas protegen sus hogares durante el invierno.

Al pasar de los años esta costumbre religiosa se asoció al comportamiento de ciertos animales al notar que estos tenían modos naturales de saber si el invierno estaba cerca o ya por terminar, por ejemplo, en Alemania se introdujo un erizo, este animalito por medio de su sombra diría cuanto invierno o mal tiempo tendrían.

Con la colonización del continente americano algunos de los colonizadores se llevaron consigo las tradiciones de sus lugares de origen, entre ellos el apoyarse en el comportamiento de algún animal que les diera la alerta del tiempo, pero al no contar con erizos, elegirían un animal de hibernación parecido, la marmota. Ahora hablemos un poco de las características de este simpático y redondo animal.

Dónde viven

Las marmotas viven en las regiones que se encuentran al norte del ecuador. Se las puede encontrar en los Estados Unidos y Canadá, en Europa cerca de los Alpes y en algunas partes de Asia al norte del Himalaya. Construyen sus casas sobre planicies...

Características físicas

Las marmotas tienen un cuerpo voluminoso que, normalmente, mide entre 30 y 60 centímetros (12–24 pulgadas) de largo. La cola mide alrededor de un tercio del largo del cuerpo. El peso de las marmotas varía entre los 3 y los 7 kilogramos (7–15 libras). Su áspero pelaje va desde amarillento hasta rojizo o marrón oscuro... Sus orejas son pequeñas. Las marmotas tienen patas robustas y garras pesadas, que les sirven para cavar la tierra.

Comportamiento

A pesar de que pueden nadar y treparse a los árboles, las marmotas pasan la mayor parte del tiempo en el suelo o bajo tierra. Cavan elaborados sistemas de madrigueras que tienen más de una entrada y túneles que llevan a cámaras habitables y cámaras de desechos.

Durante el invierno, las marmotas usan las madrigueras para hibernar. La hibernación es un período de inactividad que puede durar varias semanas. Cuando hibernan, las marmotas respiran lentamente y su corazón late sólo unas pocas veces por minuto. Su cuerpo se enfría hasta alcanzar una temperatura apenas mayor al punto de congelación. En el transcurso del invierno, la marmota puede despertarse varias veces para eliminar desechos, pero en ningún momento se alimenta. Para sobrevivir todo el invierno se nutre de la grasa que almacena después de comer grandes cantidades de alimento durante el verano y el otoño.

Las marmotas consumen hierbas y otros alimentos vegetales, tales como frutas y granos. Al igual que el resto de los animales de la familia de la ardilla, las marmotas se pueden sentar erguidas y utilizar las patas delanteras como manos para agarrar la comida.

Ahora bien, la relación entre el hombre y la marmota, no siempre es la mejor ya que las marmotas al alimentarse de plantas, a veces acaban con los cultivos y por ello a veces se les da caza, además de que sus pieles y carne son usadas en algunas regiones del mundo, pero como mencióname al comienzo de la publicación, este simpático roedor es considerado un respetado pronosticador del tiempo, en algunos países esta relación es celebrada y de allí nace esta celebración del Día de la Marmota.

Un dato curioso es que varias ciudades de EEUU hay marmotas famosas, es decir son personalidades, muy bien cuidadas y consentidas y los 02 de febrero muchos se reúnen a ver la ceremonia, en la cual estos famosos animalitos salen y señalan por medio de su sombra, si el invierno durara 6 semanas más o si ha terminado, pero para este año New Jersey esta triste ya que su marmota consentida Milltown Mel, murió de manera repentina antes de la ceremonia en cuestión, presumen que fue debido a su edad ya que las marmotas viven alrededor de 3 años.

Finalmente, estos simpáticos animales han tenido una relación directa con la naturaleza sabiendo reconocer cuando comienza y termina el invierno, cosa que el hombre observo y ha aprovechado para pronosticar el fin del invierno, ahora me despido, esperando leer sus impresiones en el cajón de comentarios.
