I suffered by trying to go through the hardest Hollow Knight challenge [ENG/ESP]

First of all, the context for this is that a friend challenged me to do this after leaving his years-old 101% savefile for the PC version of Hollow Knight on my computer to try fighting bosses, and while I actually haven't played enough of Hollow Knight yet on my own savefile to have got anywhere advanced to have the upgrades and moves I had at this point, at the same time I did have something on my sleeve that had me confident into my chances at doing this:

Muscle memory reflexes from Megaman X.

...Yeah, the thing is that Megaman X games always had wall-jumping and often had upgrades to dash and air-dash, as well as a few of them where double jumps were also a thing...and as the mobility of the character here pretty much had a resemblance to playing as Zero in those games (wall-jump, dashing, air-dashing AND the melee sword), with how much time I had poured into those I was willing to take the risk.

But before continuing, I'm aware that this is basically that one "grandmaster expert only" hidden challenge that the game provides you (and oh boy it was hidden), which is why I haven't said yet exactly what I'm talking about to avoid spoiling...so unfortunately if you don't want to get spoiled about this (be it because you are still playing HK or because you want to at one point), then this is the sign that you might want to stop here (but take my word in that I spent almost 2-3 hours in nothing but dying over and over for this).

However, if you are reading this, chances are that you are already aware of what I'm talking about because of the thumbnail...aren't you?

Primero que nada, el contexto es que un amigo me retó a hacer esto después de dejar su partida guardada al 101% de hace años de Hollow Knight en mi PC para pelear con unos jefes, y mientra que no he jugado lo suficiente de HK en mi PC para llegar así de lejos para tener estos movimientos y poderes disponibles, al mismo tiempo tenía algo que me tenía confiado para hacer esto:

La cosa es que los juegos de Megaman X siempre han tenido saltar de las paredes y solían tener mejoras para hacer dashes y dashes aéreos, al igual que unos pocos tenían saltos dobles...y ya que la mobilidad del personaje se parece mucho a jugar con Zero en esos juegos (salto de paredes, dashes y dashes aéreos Y la espada melee), con la cantidad de tiempo que vertí en esos juegos estuve dispuesto a aceptar este riesgo.

Pero antes de continuar, estoy consciente que esto es un reto oculto "gran maestro solo para expertos" que el juego te deja (y vaya que estaba oculto), por lo cual no he dicho exactamente de qué me refiero para evitar spoilers...así que desafortunadamente si no quieres spoilers sobre esto (sea porque aún estes jugando HK o quieras hacerlo en algún punto) entonces creo que deberías detenerte aqui (solo toma mi palabra de que morí una y otra vez por casi dos horas para esto).

ES EL CAMINO DEL DOLOR


It all starts with an entrance that we all thought that led into the Path of Pain, since it had a checkpoint bench and a lot of platforming challenges with buzzsaws and such to go through. It branched in a left path that my friend eventually managed to pull off...that sent you back to where the branch was (completely bamboozled), and the right path that looked like a blind jump unless you heard the buzzsaws on the right that I took on days later while he watched...and after completing, I got to a castle place that...had nothing. Didn't seem to have a reward or anything to keep going, just an empty throne.

I asked him to look up where was the entrance of this infamous Path of Pain was...and then we realized that the real entrance wasn't where we thought by going up there, but instead a few steps before that bench checkpoint we were at, as a hidden entrance inside a wall.

And that's where the real Path of Pain started.

Todo empieza con una entrada que pensabamos mis amigos y yo que llevaba al Sendero del Dolor, ya que tenía una banca de checkpoint y retos de plataformeo con sierras que había que pasar. Después se iba por dos caminos: Uno izquierdo el que mi amigo logró completar...pero lo enviaba de vuelta a la divisón de caminos (completamente engañado), y el camino derecho se veía como un salto a ciegas a menos que escucharas las sierras en la izquierda que decidí completar días después mientras el veía...y después de hacerlo, llegué a un castillo que tenía...nada. No había ningún premio ni nada para seguir, solo un trono vacío.

Le dije que buscara la entrada de este infamoso Sendero del Dolor...y entonces vimos que el verdadero punto de partida no era donde creíamos subiendo por ahí, sino unos pasos atrás antes de esa banca como una entrada oculta en la pared.

Y ahí es donde empezó el verdadero Sendero del Dolor.

See, one key difference between my experience with MMX and what Hollow Knight lets you do is that you can swing your sword upwards and downwards, and this sword stab can be used to bounce off things, enemies and spiky objects (that aren't those thorns you see with an uneven shape)...and the main premise of this is that you have to use all your dexterity to bounce off enemies and spikes with very few places with flat ground to rest, while also using the wall jumps and superdash for certain sections.

Essentially, its a tight platforming course that on top of platforming, requires you to time your attacks as a pogo spring on anything that allows you to do it or fall into spikes.

And you might be wondering now why I only have this one clean screenshot of the game and the rest would be from off-camera? Well, I tried recording with OBS, but the game got choppy enough to make it really unreliable to play on a challenge like this, which is why I resorted to the camera. And even then, there was at least one or two sections I didn't record as by the time I got to the one where I did start recording, it was because I got stuck there while my friends watched and we went somewhere else, which means that I started recording a few hours later when I retook these attempts at night.

In THIS one section where I got stuck, I kept dying at this tight space where I had to use the airdash and bouncing off saws with quite the precision after having done several bounces with the sword to get there, as the spaces were small enough so that if I jumped just a bit too late or bounced/jumped too high into the ceiling, I would die.

Una diferencia clave entre mi experiencia con MMX es que en Hollow Knight puedes atacar con la espada hacia arriba y hacia abajo, y este ataque de espada puede usarse para rebotar de cosas, enemigos y objetos puntiagudos (que no sean esas plantas puntiagudas que ves)...y la idea es que tienes que ser muy rápido rebotando de estos con muy pocos lugares de piso liso para descansar, usando los saltos de pared y superdashes para algunas secciones.

Esencialmente es una pista muy ajustada de plataformeo que además de plataformeo, necesitas usar ese rebote de espada como trampolín en lo que sea que te permita hacerlo o caer en las púas.

Y te preguntaras porque solo tengo esta foto en limpio del juego y el resto de una cámara? Bueno, intenté grabar con OBS, pero el juego se puso muy lag para poder jugar un reto como este, así que por eso grabé por fuera. Y aun así, habían una o dos secciones que no grabé ya que para el momento en el que empecé a grabar, fue porque me quedé atascado ahí mientras mis amigos veían y nos fuimos a hacer otra cosa, así que empecé a grabar fue más tarde unas horas después cuando retomé los intentos de noche.

En ESTA sección que me atoré, seguía muriendo en este espacio pequeño donde tenía que hacer dash aéreo y rebotar de las sierras con suficiente precisión después de hacer varios rebotes con la espada para llegar ahí, ya que si saltaba muy tarde o rebotaba/saltaba muy alto y tocaba el techo, moriría.

The only saving grace is the ambar medal I had equipped that slowly regenerated a single damaged peg of health if I waited enough, and that in most of the few places where there's flat ground to rest and set a checkpoint, there's a statue I could use to fill up my health back completely. And after around maybe 10-15 minutes later...I cleared this hurdle of pain.

And yet, this was only the appetizer before the two hour course meal that was awaiting me after that. Because it turns out that after the challenges I went before and after completing that one, the one that was left was the end. But I only found out after spending that much time suffering constantly at attempts at it.

From deaths at somehow failing to walljump properly from this bit or somehow just about not making it close enough to the wall to touch and jump off it...

...to deaths where I was so fed up and impatient at that point that, outside of violently attacking the health regeneration statue, I ran in without timing my entrance and ended up failing to bounce off properly from the very first spikes, as many times where I tried to just superdash into the wall in front of me, I missed the timing to walljump and fell like a brick into the spikes...

..so many times...so many deaths at the start...so many deaths at the middle...and even a few deaths where I got to the last hurdles but I lost my rhythm and died before crossing the moving saw at the end...

...so many, SO many deaths where I cycled through the game's music for the place, playing with a bunch of other music, playing without music, and even around half an hour of playing with Turbo Tunnels from Battletoads just to channel in that insurmountably unfair energy into what only required me to use my energy and patience to go through as I had started consistently getting to the middle section...

...tantas, pero TANTAS muertes que pasé por la música del juego, otras canciones, jugar sin música, y hasta media hora de Turbo Tunnerls de Battletoads solo para canalizar esa energía injusta en lo que me exigía mi energia y patiencia para completar ya que estaba empezando a ser mas consistente...
