Welcome to this blog! This time we will explore and visit one of the most important museums in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife: the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts. One day off, I decided to take a tour of this museum, located right next to the Plaza del Príncipe de Asturias. The place is very picturesque, worthy of a postcard of the nineteenth century for its buildings of architecture characteristic of that era. The entrance to this museum is free, so you can enjoy a visit at any time.

¡Bienvenidos a este blog! En esta oportunidad exploraremos y visitaremos uno de los museos más importates de la ciudad de Santa Cruz de Tenerife: el Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes. Un día libre, decidí darme una visita por este museo, ubicado justo al lado de la Plaza del Príncipe de Asturias. El lugar es muy pintoresco, digno de una postal del siglo XIX por sus edificios de arquitectura característica de dicha época. La entrada a este museo es gratis, por lo que puedes disfrutar de una visita en cuaquier momento.

The museum has a really striking facade, although I personally overlooked taking pictures of the outside of the building. However, the most important thing is what is inside, the content, so let's start this visit to this striking museum and see everything it has to show us. The first thing we are going to find at the beginning of the tour of the museum is several samples of the clothing used by the people of the Canary Islands centuries ago. We must bear in mind that this museum was inaugurated in 1929, although its location dates back to 1840. The museum presents a wide collection of works of art, ranging from paintings from the 16th century to more contemporary objects.

El Museo posee una fachada realmente llamativa, aunque personalmente pasé por alto tomar fotografías del exterior del edificio. Sin embargo, lo más importate es lo que está adentro, el contenido, así que vamos a iniciar esta visita a este llamativo museo y ver todo lo que tiene para mostrarnos. Lo primero que vamos a encontrar al inicio del recorrido por el museo son diversas muestras de la indumentaria o ropa que utilizaban las personas de las islas canarias siglos atrás. Debemos tener en cuenta que este museo de inauguró en el año 1929, aunque su emplazaemiento se remonta al año 1840. El museo presenta una amplia colección de obras de arte, que van desde pinturas del siglo XVI hasta objetos más contemporáneos.

If there is something I have noticed a lot here in Tenerife is how much they remember or appreciate the clothing of their ancestors. On various special dates and important celebrations, the local dress is always present. In this museum, a good collection of old costumes is represented, which were frequently used by the inhabitants of the islands more than 1 century ago. These costumes immediately make us imagine that the people who wore them lived in a mostly rural environment, working in the fields. Part of the clothing includes hats and fabrics that function as protection against the sun, especially in summer. Also striking is the custom of completely covering the face, which apparently was a custom of some women of the time, and apparently would not have been related to the culture of the Arab countries.

Si hay algo que he notado mucho aquí en Tenerife es lo mucho que rememoran o aprecian la vestimenta de sus antepasados. En diversas fechas especiales y celebraciones importantes, la indumentaria local está siempre presente. En este museo, se representa una buena colección de trajes antiguos, los cuales eran utilizados frecuentemente por los pobladores de las islas hace más de 1 siglo. Estos trajes inmediatamente nos hacen imaginar que las personas que los utilizaban vivían en un entorno mayoritariamente rural, trabjando en campos. Parte de la vestimenta incluye sombreros y telas que funcionan para protección contra el sol, especialmente en verano. Llama la atención también la costumbre de cubrir totalmente la cara, lo cual al parecer era una costumbre de algunas mujeres de la época, y aparetemente no tendría relación con la cultura de países los árabes.

One of the paintings of the place caught my attention, not only because of the nice woman it represents but also because it is one of the "Lecheras", women who sold milk in the streets and even walked long distances on mountainous trails to get from the place where they collected the milk to the place where it was sold. There is a trail called Las Lecheras, which connects the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna with Santa Cruz, and it is said that these women walked it frequently in those times. Nearby there is another room where some sculptures are exhibited.

Una de las pinturas del lugar llamó mi atención, no solo por la simpática mujer que representa sino porque se trata de una de las "Lecheras", mujeres que vendían leche en las calles e incluso caminaban largas distancias en senderos montañosos para trasladarse del sitio donde recolectaban la leche hasta el sitio de la venta. Existe precisamente un sendero llamado Las Lecheras, el cual conecta la ciudad de San Cristóbal de La Laguna con Santa Cruz, y se dice que estas mujeres lo recorrían frecuentemente en aquellas épocas. Cerca de allí hay otra sala en donde se exhiben algunas esculturas.

Some of these sculptures refer to important characters of Tenerife's past, others are sculptures a bit abstract or rather difficult to relate to the era in question. One in particular is the statue of a female face in stone, and I must confess that it is a bit disturbing, but at the same time interesting because I am curious to know what is its origin. We can also see a picture with a painting that represents an area of the city of Santa Cruz that today would be the Plaza de La Candelaria. This section ends the second floor of a total of three that the museum has. The next level, after climbing some stairs, takes us to a darker room where we can find more paintings and works of art.

Algunas de estas esculturas se refieren a personajes importantes del pasado de Tenerife, otras son esculturas un poco abstractas o más bien difíciles de relacionar con la epoca en cuestión. Una en particular es la estatua de una cara femenina en piedra, y debo confesar que es un poco inquietante, aunque a la vez interesante ya que me da curiosidad saber cuál es su origen. Tambièn podemos ver un cuadro con una pintura que representa a una zona de la ciudad de Santa Cruz que actualmente sería la Plaza de La Candelaria. En esta sección termina la primera planta de un total de tres que posee el museo. El siguiente nivel, tras subir unas escaleras, nos lleva a una sala más oscura en donde podemos encontrar más pinturas y obras de arte.

In this room with black walls, we can find paintings with more abstract themes, although we can also observe a nice painting that represents the Plaza Weyler and its appearance some time ago, long before the construction of the modern Tramway. In the middle of this room was also a somewhat bizarre statue of a face. I didn't take pictures of it but I may show it in a 3Speak video if I ever get all the footage I took of the place together. On this second level of the museum, there is also another much larger and well-lit room, where a large number of objects, paintings, and sculptures are on display.

En esta sala con paredes de color negro, podemos encontrar pinturas con temáticas un poco más abstractas, aunque también podemos observar una simpática pintura que representa a la Plaza Weyler y su aspecto algún tiempo atrás, mucho antes de la construcción del moderno Tranvía. En el medio de esta sala se encontraba también una estatua un poco bizarra de una cara. No tomé fotografías de ella pero quizás la muestre en un video de 3Speak si llego a juntar todas las grabaciones que hice del lugar. En este segundo nivel del museo también hay otra sala mucho más grande y bien iluminada, en donde se encuentran exhibidos gran cantidad de objetos, pinturas y esculturas.

Here we can find a beautiful sculpture of one of the ambulatory milkmaids who used to sell milk in the streets of Santa Cruz. Another very notorious sculpture that we can find in the place is the one of a girl. But my favorite is one called "Lucha por la vida" (Fight for life), it represents a very skinny dog with fear (because of the way its tail is held), apparently stealing food from a child that seems to be more like a baby. It can be clearly noticed the angry gesture of the child for being deprived of his food, although it could also be interpreted that the child is taking the food from the dog.

Aqui podemos encontrar una bonita escultura de una de las lecheras ambulates que vendían leche por las calles de Santa Cruz. Otra escultura muy notoria que podemos encontrar en el lugar es la de una niña. Pero mi favorita es una llamada "Lucha por la vida", representa a un perro muy flaco y con miedo (por la manera en que tiene su cola), aparentemente robándole la comida a un niño que por su contextura pareciera ser más bien un bebé. Se puede notar claramente el gesto enojado del niño por ser despojado de su comida, aunque también podría interpretarse que el niño está quitándole la comida al perro.

There really are many interesting things to see on this level, from a chest to a peculiar chair with a very detailed weaving depicting a rural landscape, animals, and a church. At this point in my visit, I had no idea how big this museum was, and if all the pictures I had taken so far were too many or if there was still a lot left to see. What I didn't yet know was that there was still one level left that showed many more interesting and peculiar things. The first level represents a little bit of classical clothing and some sculptures, the second one has many paintings and curious objects, and the third one is the most "esoteric" since it has the most elaborate and detailed paintings, related to religious themes and the medieval church.

Realmente hay muchas cosas interesantes que ver en este nivel, desde un cofre hasta una peculiar silla con un muy detallado tejido representando un paisaje rural, animales y una iglesia. A estas alturas de mi visita, no tenía idea de que tan grande era este museo, y si todas las fotos que había tomado hasta ahora eran demasiadas o aún quedaba mucho por ver. Lo que aún no sabía era que aún restaba un nivel que muestra muchas más cosas interesantes y peculiares. Si el primer nivel representaba un poco de la vestimenta clásica y algunas esculturas, el segundo muchas pnturas y objetos curiosos, el tercero es el más "esotérico" puesto que posee las pinturas más elaboradas y detalladas, relacionadas a temas religiosos y la iglesia medieval.

What is probably the most detailed and elaborate painting in the museum is the Triptych of Nava and Grimon by Pieter Coecke van Aelst. It is a painting dated 1546, i.e. it is more than 500 years old! It is impressive to be in front of such an amazing and at the same time ancient painting, created in a time so different from our own. Seeing it with your own eyes is a unique experience, and it is more or less what you should feel when you see a painting like the famous Mona Lisa. This section of the museum contains a good number of such paintings, with depictions of angels, Christ, and biblical and religious scenes. If you are Catholic, you will surely enjoy this part of the museum very much.

La que es probablemente la pintura más detallada y elaborada del museo es el Tríptico de Nava y Grimón de Pieter Coecke van Aelst. Es una pintura fechada en 1546, es decir ¡Tiene más de 500 años! Es impresionante estar frente a una pintura tan asombrosa y a la vez antigua, creada en una época tan diferente a la nuestra. Verla con tus propios ojos es una experiencia única, y es más o menos lo que quizás se deba sentir al ver una pintura como la famosa Mona Lisa. Esta sección del museo contiene un buen número de pinturas de este tipo, con representaciones de ángeles, Cristo, escenas bíblicas y religiosas. Si eres católico, seguramente disfrutarás mucho de esta parte del museo.

In this next and last section of the third floor of the museum, you can find paintings referring to military battles, which are of considerable size, and the largest in the museum. It is a large room that includes a pair of pianos. The last corridor of this tour shows us more paintings, which illustrate some landscapes and people. However, what is most striking is an old clock located at the beginning of the corridor, which is still working. It has a very intricate mechanism. At the end of this corridor, we come across again with typical Canarian costumes on mannequins, thus giving a connection with the beginning of the museum and our tour.

En esta seguiente y última sección del tercer piso del museo, puedes encontrar pinturas referentes a batallas militares, las cuales son de tamaño considerable, las más grandes del museo. Se trata de una sala grande que incluye un par de pianos. El último pasillo de este recorrido nos muestra más pinturas, que ilustran algunos paisajes y personas. Sin embargo, lo que más llama la atención es un antiguo reloj ubicado al inicio del pasillo, el cual aún se encuentra funcionando. Posee u mecanismo bastante intrincado. Al final de este pasillo volvemos a toparnos con vestimentas típicas canarias sobre maniquíes, dando así conexión con el inicio del museo y de nuestro recorrido.
